Experiment - 5

Aim :- To identify acidic and basic radical in the given salt.

S.No Experiment Observation Inference
1. Preliminary Test
Physical Examination:
i) Physical State Crystalline Solid
ii) Colour White/Deliquescence Cu2+, Fe2+,Fe3+, Ni2+,
Co2+ absent
iii) Odour :- Mix a little amount of salt Vinegar like/ 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂−
with drop of water and rub between Ammoniacal N𝐻4+
finger.
iv) Solubility Soluble Water soluble ions
are present
v) Density Light
2. Flame Test:- A small amount of salt Colour flame is not Ca2+,Sr2+,Cu2+, Zn2+
is made into paste with conc.HCl in observed absent
a watch glass introduce in the flame

3. Action of Heat:- A small quantity of Characteristics smell May be actetate

salt is taken in a dry test tube and of vinegar 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂−
strongly heated ion present
Identification of Acidic Radical
1. Dilute H2SO4 Test :- No gas evolved 𝐶𝑂32− , 𝑆𝑂32− , 𝑆 2− is
Salt + dil. H2SO4 absent
2. Concentrated H2SO4 Colourless vapours 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂− may be
Salt + Conc. H2SO4+ Heat having smell of present
vinegar
Confirmatory Test
3. Ferric Chloride Test (FeCl3) :- Red colouration 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂− confirmed
Aqueous solution of salt + few drops
of neutral FeCl3 solution. Filter if
necessary. Divide the solution in two
parts.

i. To one part add dil. HCl Red Colouration 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂− confirmed
disappeared
ii. To second part add water and boil Reddish brown ppt 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂− confirmed
Write the Chemical Reaction with Pencil
Reaction
FeCl3 test: - FeCl3 + 3CH3COONa → (CH3COO)3Fe + 3NaCl
Deep red Colouration
Fe (CH3COO)3 + 2H2O → CH3COO( OH)2Fe↓ + 2CH3COOH
Basic Ferric acetate
Reddish brown ppt.
4. Ester Test :- Salt + add few drops of Pleasant fruity smell 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂− confirmed
conc. H2SO4 + few drops of ethyl
alcohol
Write the Chemical Reaction with Pencil
Reaction
Ester Test:- 2CH3COONa + H2SO4 → 2CH3COOH + Na2SO4
CH3COOH + C2H5OH → CH3COOC2H5 + H2O
Acetic acid Ethyl alcohol Ethyl acetate
(Fruity smell)
5. Oxalic Test:- Make a paste of solid Smell of vinegar 𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂− confirmed
salt with oxalic acid solution.
Write the Chemical Reaction with Pencil

Identification of Basic Radical

1. To a little salt add NaOH solution Colourless gas having 𝑁𝐻4+ may be present
and heat ammoniacal smell.
Confirmatory Test
2. Above solution + Glass dipped in Dense white fumes 𝑁𝐻4+ confirmed
conc. HCl is brought near mouth of are formed
the test tube
Write the Chemical Reaction with Pencil
Reaction
NaOH Test : - NH4Cl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O + NH3↑
3. Nessler’s reagent Test (K2HgI4] :- Brown/ Orange ppt 𝑁𝐻4+ confirmed
Aqueous solution + NaOH +
Nessler’s reagent
Reaction [ Write with pencil]
Nessler’s reagent Test :- NH4Cl + KOH → KCl + H2O + NH3
2K2HgI4 + 3KOH + NH3 → NH2HgO.HgI + 7KI + 2H2O
