EXPERIMENT

AIM :- To analyse given salt for one cation and one anion.
Experiment Observation Inference

Physical examination-

Note the colour of the given salt. White Fe2+, Cu2+, Ni2+,Co3+ are
absent
Note the smell of given salt
Vinegar like smell CH3COO- may be present
Test for anion:

Dilute H2SO4 Test:

To a pinch of salt add dil H2SO4 No gas evolved. CO32- , SO32- ,S2-, NO2- ions
are absent.
Conc. H2SO4 Test:

Heat a pinch of salt with conc.H2SO4. Gas with vinegar like CH3COO- present.
smell evolved.
Confirmatory test for CH3COO- ion
Neutral FeCl3 test:
To aqueous solution of salt add
Red ppt.
neutral FeCl3 solution.
Red colour disappears. CH3COO-confirmed..
Filter the ppt. and add dil HCl to the
filtrate.

Test for cation:

No smell of ammonia Zero group (NH4+ ) absent.
Heat given salt with NaOH solution.

Preparation of original solution (O.S.)

Clear solution formed. Label it as O.S.
Dissolve given salt in water.

To O.S. add dil HCl. White ppt. I group(Pb2+) present

Dissolve ppt in hot water. Divide it
into two parts.
Yellow ppt. Pb2+ confirmed.
KI test- To first part add KI solution.
K2CrO4 test- To second part add Pb2+ confirmed.
Yellow ppt.
K2CrO4 solution.

Result: Given salt contains CH3COO- and Pb2+ ions.
