SAMPLE PROBLEMS on HYDROSTATIC PRESSURES ON SURFACES

(Plane and Curved Surfaces)

Prob.1. A vertical rectangular gate 1.5 m wide and 3 m high is submerged in water with its top edge 2 m
below the water surface. Find the total pressure acting on one side of the gate and its location from the
bottom.

Solution:

𝑃 = 𝛾 ℎ̅ 𝐴 water surface

ℎ̅ = 1.5 + 2 = 3.5 𝑚

𝑃 = 9.81 (3.5 )[(1.5 × 3)] ℎ̅ =𝑦̅ = 3.5 m 2m

𝑃 = 154.51 kN
𝐼𝑔 1.5 (3)3
𝑒= ̅
, 𝐼𝑔 = = 3.375 𝑚4 1.5 m
𝐴𝑦 12

𝑦̅ = ℎ̅ = 3.5 m e cg
3.375
𝑒= = 0.214 𝑚 y cp
[(1.5×3)](3.5)

𝑦 = 1.5 − 𝑒 = 1.5 − 0.214

𝑦 = 1.286 𝑚

Prob. 2. A vertical triangular gate with top base horizontal and 1.5 m wide is 3 m high. It is submerged in
oil having sp. gr. Of 0.82 with its top base submerged to a depth of 2m. Determine the magnitude and
location of the total hydrostatic pressure acting on one side of the gate.

Solution: Draw your free body diagram.

𝑃 = 𝛾 ℎ̅ 𝐴
1
ℎ̅ = 2 + (3) = 3𝑚 = 𝑦̅
3

1
𝑃 = (9.81 × 0.82)(3) [ (1.5 × 3)]
2

𝑃 = 54.3 𝑘𝑁
Center of pressure 𝑦𝑝 = 𝑦̅ + 𝑒
1.5(3)3
𝐼𝑔 36
𝑒= = 1 = 0.167 𝑚
𝐴𝑦̅ (1.5×3)(3)
2

𝑦𝑝 = 3 + 0.167 = 3.167 𝑚 from the oil surface

1
Pressure at the center of gravity of gate:

𝑝𝑐𝑔 = 𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑟 + 𝛾𝑜𝑖𝑙 ℎ𝑜 , from the diagram ℎ𝑜 = 2.56 𝑚

𝑝𝑐𝑔 = 7 + (9.81𝑥0.82)(2.56) = 27.59 𝑘𝑃𝑎

Total hydrostatic force 𝑃 = 𝑝𝑐𝑔 ∙ 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 27.59𝑥(3𝑥3) = 248.34 𝑘𝑁

𝑃 = 𝛾ℎ̅ 𝐴

248.34 = (9.81x0.82) ℎ̅ (3x3)

ℎ̅ = 3.43 𝑚
̅
ℎ 3.43
𝑦̅ = = = 4.85 𝑚
sin 45° sin 45°

𝐼𝑔 3(3)3⁄12
𝑒= = = 0.155 𝑚, 𝑥 = 1.5 + 𝑒 = 1.5 + 0.155 = 1.655𝑚
𝐴𝑦̅ (3𝑥3)(4.85)

∑ 𝑀𝐴 = 0

𝑃(𝑥) + 𝑊(1.06) − 𝐹(2.12) = 0

(248.34)(1.655) + 5(1.06) = F (2.12)

𝐹 = 196.37 𝑘𝑁

Prob. 4.

Solution:

Horizontal component of hydrostatic force, 𝑃ℎ = 𝛾ℎ̅𝐴 = 9.81(5)(4𝑥2) = 392.4 𝑘𝑁

𝐼𝑔 4(2)3⁄12
Location of 𝑃ℎ , 𝑦 = 1 + 𝑒, 𝑒= = = 0.067 𝑚
𝐴𝑦̅ (4𝑥2)(5)

𝑦 = 1 + 0.067 = 1.067 𝑚
Therefore 𝑃ℎ is located 1.067 m below point B ( refer to the diagram).

Vertical component 𝑃𝑣 = 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 = 𝛾 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷

Volume of ABCD = 4(area ABCD) , area of ABCD = 𝐴1 + 𝐴2

1
𝐴1 = 4x2= 8 m2 , 𝐴2 = 𝜋(2)2 = 3.14 𝑚2
4

A = 8 + 3.14 = 11.14 m2, 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 = 4 (11.14) = 44.56 𝑚3

𝑃𝑣 = 9.81 (44.56) = 437.13 𝑘𝑁

Location of the vertical component: 𝐴𝑥̅ = 𝐴1 𝑥1 + 𝐴2 𝑥2 , 𝑥1 = 1𝑚 , 𝑥2 = 4𝑟 ⁄3𝜋 = 4(2)⁄3𝜋

11.14𝑥̅ = 8(1) + 3.14(0.849) 𝑥2 = 0.849 𝑚

𝑥̅ = 0.957 𝑚, therefore 𝑃𝑣 is acting 0.957m to the right of A.
