The English Renaissance and Shakespeare

Assignment Instructions:
Single Task

Situation:

In this unit you learned about the literature of the Renaissance and read Hamlet
by William Shakespeare. Now you are going to have an opportunity to compare
and contrast two different theatrical versions of a scene from a play by
Shakespeare.

You will complete a table with your observations of the similarities and the
differences between the two versions.

Finally, you will use your findings to write an analytical essay comparing the two
presentations.

The video that you just watched explains the assignment. If you have questions,
please ask your teacher.

Feel free to watch the video as many times as you need!

Directions:

Analyzing Drama

You read Hamlet this unit. Search videos on internet of two versions of the scene
below:

 Hamlet, Act III, Scene i

Part A
Which two versions did you choose? Include the URL for each of your sources
below.

Part B

Now compare and contrast the techniques in the two theatrical versions that you
watched.

In the table below, describe the similarities and differences between the two
versions for each element of the performance.

Note how the techniques enhance or alter the audience’s experience and what
meanings (shades of characterization, connotations of words, etc.) become
clearer as you watch the two presentations.

 Include analysis of any special adaptations made to the text (the dialogue)
or the setting that distinguish this version from the original play.
 Edit and revise the essay for spelling and grammar errors.

***Make sure to begin with an Introductory paragraph that tells which dramatic
versions that you are comparing with the scene.

Organize your body paragraphs and give specific examples to support your points.

If, for example, you say that one play is set in modern times in America, explain it
and tell how it differs from the other version and the original. ***
