UNIT 32: COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES

Comparative form
 We use the comparative form of adjectives when we want to compare two
elements such as objects, places and people.
 When an adjective has one or two syllables, we make the comparative form
by adding the ending -er. We usually put than after the adjective.
Example: Ho Chi Minh City is bigger than Da Lat.
Jane is taller than Mary.
 When an adjective has more than two syllables, we put the word more
before the adjective and the word than after it.
Example: Exercise 4 is more difficult than Exercise 6.
Superlative form
 We use the superlative form to compare someone or something in a group
with all the other things in that group.
 When the adjective has one or two syllables, we form the superlative form
by adding the ending -est. We put the before the adjective.
Example: Paul is the tallest person in the class.
 When the adjective has more than two syllables, we add the most in the
front of it.
Example: This is the most difficult exercise in the book.
Spelling rules
 How to make comparative and superlative adjectives.
With one-syllable words we add -er/ -est.
Example: tall -> taller -> the tallest
fast -> faster -> the fastest
 With one-syllable words ending in vowel + consonant, we double the
consonant then we add -er/ -est.
Example: big -> bigger -> the biggest
hot -> hotter -> the hottest
 With words ending in consonant + -y, we change the -y to -ie and add -r/ -st
Example: easy -> easier -> the easiest
dry -> drier -> the driest
 For adjectives with two or more syllables, we use more + adjective and
the most + adjective.
Example: important -> more important -> the most important
beautiful -> more beautiful -> the most beautiful
 Irregular adjectives.
