whenever necessary.

Good day, class!

Let us play a game called, “Pick Drop and Count”

Materials needed:
● Pick, Drop and Count box

• Counters or any available counting materials.

• Flashcards of addition sentence

Example: 2 and 3 is ___

6 and 5 is____

Activating Prior Note to the Teacher:

Knowledge
(5 minutes) If this material shown above is not available, use three boxes for the
activity.

1. Box 1: Place the objects here. (bottle caps)

2. Box 2: Pupils will drop the objects here.
3. Box 3: Pupils will put the counted objects into the third box.

Note to the Teacher: You can utilize available materials.

Directions:
1. Pick a flashcard.
2. Pick an object from the box as shown on the flashcards.
3. Drop the objects on the on the second box.
4. Count the number of objects.
(Pupils can write the answer on the flashcards.)

(Learners will alternately do the activity)

Did you find difficulty in putting the objects together?

2
No sir/ma’am, we enjoyed the game.

What did you do to get the answer?

I counted the objects that I put together.
Good job! From our first activity you have shown how to illustrate
addition as “putting together, combining or joining sets”. In today’s
discussion, you are expected to:
Lesson 1. illustrate that joining two sets means addition;
Purpose/Intention 2. combine objects or sets of objects to form addition; and
(2 minutes) 3. show self-confidence (responsibility for oneself) and observe
personal hygiene in illustrating putting together or combining
sets involving addition.

Note to the Teacher: Unlock the words through demonstration.

addends and sum, add

1. Introduce the Concept with Concrete Objects

2. Help learners show what addends are by using concrete objects.

Place 3 bottle caps in one group and 2 bottle caps in another group.

How many bottle caps are in each group?

There are 5 bottle caps in all.

3. Tell that the numbers of bottle caps are the addends.

Lesson Language Addends refers to the numbers that are being added together in an
Practice addition.
(5 minutes)
For example, in the addition problem 3+5, the numbers 3 and 5 are the
addends. When you add these addends together, you get the sum 8.

Write down the addition sentence on the board: 3 + 2 = 5.

Point to them the addends and the sum.

Putting together, combine, and addition sentence

(Use Concrete Objects like blocks, or any small objects)

1. Introduce the concept by placing 3 red caps in one group and 2 blue
caps in another group.

2. Ask the students to put together or combine the two groups into one
and count the total number of caps.

3
3. Show that combining 3 caps and 2 caps gives a total of 5 caps. Write
the addition sentence 3 + 2 = 5.

Example:
If you have 4 caps and you add 3 more caps, putting them altogether
gives you a total of 7.

During/Lesson Proper
Ok class, I am going to read to you a short story.
