naturally occurring
solid mass. It is
composed of two or
more minerals.
Rocks are all
around us!
Petrology is defined as the scientific study of rocks
that deals with their composition, texture, and
structure; their occurrence and distribution; and
their origin concerning physicochemical conditions
and geologic processes.
The three types of rock are
IGNEOUS, SEDIMENTARY & METAMORPHIC
*Remember that the difference
between the three types of rocks is how
each rock is formed.
Igneous rocks are from
the Latin word Ignis,
meaning fire. Generally,
igneous rocks are formed
by fire. This is formed
from the cooling of
molten rock at or below
the surface of the Earth.
Molten rocks refer to
magma or lava.
Magma is a mixture of
molten and semi-
molten rock that can
be found beneath the
surface of the Earth
while lava is a molten
rock that reaches
Earth's surface.
Magma/lava is a
mixture of
elements such as
silica, iron,
sodium,
potassium, etc.
TYPES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS
EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCKS AND INTRUSIVE
IGNEOUS ROCKS
letter A refers to the molten rocks that
reached the Earth's surface. This is an
extrusive igneous rock. This is also known
as volcanic rocks after the Roman fire God
Vulcan). When lava cools and solidifies at
the surface of the Earth extrusive igneous
rock will form. Since the extrusive igneous
rock forms at the surface of the Earth, it
cools very fast and develops small crystals.
letter B refers to the molten rocks that
solidified beneath the surface of the
Earth. When the molten rocks cool and
solidify beneath the surface of the Earth
this will form intrusive igneous rocks.
Intrusive igneous rocks are also called
plutonic (after Pluto, the god of the
lower world in classical mythology).
Since
the intrusive igneous rock forms
beneath the surface of the Earth, it
cools slowly and forms large crystals.
The examples of intrusive igneous rocks are
granite, gabbro, diorite, and pegmatite.
The two main types of igneous rocks: intrusive
rocks (also known as plutonic rocks) and extrusive
rocks (also known as volcanic rocks)
YOU CAN CLASSIFY IGNEOUS ROCKS ACCORDING TO THEIR TEXTURE AND MINERAL
COMPOSITION.
The texture of igneous rocks is mainly a result of its cooling history. The characteristics
related to grain size are known as a rock's texture. The grain size of the minerals in
the rocks help us classify the igneous rock if it is coarse-grained, fine-grained, or
glassy.
The texture of igneous rocks is
affected by the rate of cooling,
where the cooling takes place
and the composition of the
materials that make up the
igneous rocks. The faster the
magma cools the smaller the
crystals that are formed. Slow
cooling allows large crystals to
form.
Igneous rocks may
be simply classified
according to their
chemical/mineral
composition as
felsic, intermediate,
mafic, and
ultramafic.
Igneous rocks are very important because we can use these rocks as
decorative rocks and stones for buildings and statues. The minerals and the
chemicals from igneous rocks can also be used to identify the physical and
chemical properties that exist within the Earth’s mantle.
