From The Principal’s Desk - 10th January 2025

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to term two. Wishing all our JBS community a very happy new year. I hope
that you had the opportunity to spend time with family and friends and recharge the
batteries. The second term in the life cycle of a school is always busy with Grade 12
students completing courses, submitting university applications, and getting ready for the
external exams in May. Other grade groups such as Grade 10 and Grade 5 begin to
complete the MYP and PYP respectively with personal projects and exhibitions looming.

Over the next few weeks, we have mock exams for Grades 9 and 10 and camps for grades
6 - 8. Our G12 will complete IA’s and the group 4 project so both students and staff have
busy schedules. In primary, we have conferences as well as the start of new units of
inquiry and the second round of the reading comprehension standardized tests.

This week at JBS has been full of excitement and achievements in sports! A big well done
to our primary cross-country runners, who put in a fantastic effort during their DASSA
event at the 7s Stadium on Monday. Congratulations also to the boys’ U14 football team,
who secured a hard-fought victory in their cup competition clash, advancing to the final
eight teams out of the original 36 – a brilliant accomplishment that highlights their
dedication and teamwork.

We also held trials for primary and secondary boys’ basketball as well as the secondary
swim squad this week. Emails will be sent to parents shortly with the outcomes of these
trials. To those who may not be selected this time: remember, every trial is a valuable
opportunity to grow, and there will always be more chances to participate and improve.
Good luck to all our athletes as we enter a very busy schedule over the next two months,
packed with events and competitions. A special thank you, as always, to our incredible PE
teachers for their dedication and for giving up their free time to make all of this possible!

We held our second biannual Alumni event last night hosting around seventy former
students who joined us for an evening of memories and catchup. Our former Head Boy
from Class 2021, Seif Alshunnar who is currently in year 4 of his medical degree at the
University of Nottingham UK, gave a heartfelt speech about the community of JBS and
how this has shaped many Alumni as they have continued their life after school and the
lasting impact it has had. It was wonderful to connect with students still at university and
those who have now finished and joined the world of work. Many thanks to Natalie
Pringle and Claire McDaid for organizing the event. I am already looking forward to the
next one in January 2027.

On Sunday, JBS senior students from Grades 11 and 12 will be supporting the Dubai
Marathon. This has become an annual event for both JBS staff and students. They will be
based at a water station and support in providing water to the runners. This voluntary
work supports students’ community service (Creativity Activity Service - CAS / Service
Learning - SL) but also provides support for a wonderful Dubai event.
The next few weeks will be very busy but also packed with exciting events including the
JBS Car Park Market, Spring Carnival, and the International Day Celebrations amongst a
host of PFA events and the whole school production of Annie in February. I look forward
to catching up with many parents over the coming weeks, but for now, I wish you a
wonderful weekend.

Kind regards,

Richard Drew
Principal
