ULCERATIVE LYMPHANGITIS

OF HORSES & CATTLE

• Contagious disease of horses and
cattle

• Lymphangitis of lower limbs


ETIOLOGY
• Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis
---------classical disease
• facultative intracellular parasite
• Gram-positive, pleomorphic rod
• non-motile, aerobic, non-spore
forming
• Streptococci, staphylococci,
Rhodococcus equi, Pseudomonas
auroginosa
PATHOGENESIS

❖ Skin wound infection-------------invasion of


lymphatic vessels---------development of
abscess

❖ Unusual lymphnode involvement


CLINICAL SIGNS
❖ Horse --------initial wound infection
❖ Swelling and pain of pastern
❖ Lameness
❖ Unilateral or bilateral
❖ Nodules in subcut tissues (around fetlock)
❖ Nodule rupture
❖ Creamy green pus discharge
❖ Ulcers with ragged edges and necrotic
base
CLINICAL SIGNS

❖ Lesion heal in 1-2 weeks


❖ But fresh crops may occur
❖ Persistence of disease for upto year
❖ Lesion in cattle similar as in horses
❖ May be lymphnodes enlargement
❖ Ulcers discharge gelatinous clear
exudate

DIAGNOSIS

❖ CF

❖ Isolation and identification of


organism
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS

❖ Glanders

❖ Epizootic lymphangitis

❖ Sporotrichosis
TREATMENT

❖ Surgical drainage
❖ Procaine penicillin @ 20000-80000
IU/Kg b.i.d IM
❖ Tetracyclines
❖ Autogenous vaccine but doubtful
efficacy
❖ Guarded prognosis in later stages
CONTROL

❖ Good hygiene in stables

❖ Careful disinfection of injuries to


lower limbs
