Problem Solving Approach

• Observation: Always keep your eyes and ears open. Intuition also works most of
the time.

•  Formulation: Formulate the problem based on the observation. The observations

are translated into a research problem.

•  Analysis: Collect all data, discard irrelevant data, analyze the data and provide
feasible solutions

• Decision Making: The solution to the problem is suggested and recommended for
the implementation. It is at the discretion of the management to accept or reject the
suggested solution. The decision making is not a part of the research, but matters
much in industrial environment.

BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus

Research Objectives

 Formulative Research: To gain familiarity with a phenomenon or to achieve new

insights into it

 Descriptive Research: To portray accurately the characteristics of a particular

situation or a group

 Diagnostic Research : To determine the frequency with which something occurs or

with which it is associated with something else

 Hypothesis Testing Research: To test a hypothesis of a causal relationship

between variables
