OVERVIEW
What is Quadratic
Equation?
Introduction
● Quadratics or quadratic equations can
be defined as a polynomial equation of a
second degree, which implies that it
comprises of a minimum of one term that
is squared. The general form of the
quadratic equation is:

ax² + bx + c = 0, where x is an unknown

variable and a,b,c are numerical coefficients
Here, a ≠ 0 because if it equals zero then the equation will not
remain quadratic anymore and it will become a linear
equation, such as:
bx+c=0
Thus, this equation cannot be called a quadratic equation.
The terms a, b and c are also called quadratic coefficients.
The solutions to the quadratic equation are the values of the
unknown variable x, which satisfy the equation. These
solutions are called roots or zeros of quadratic equations. The
roots of any polynomial are the solutions for the given
equation.
Beneath are the illustrations Examples of a quadratic
of quadratic equations of the equation with the absence of
form a ‘ C ‘- a constant term.
(ax² + bx + c = 0)
x² –x – 9 = 0 -x² – 9x = 0
5x² – 2x – 6 = 0 x² + 2x = 0
3x² + 4x + 8 = 0 -6x² – 3x = 0
-x² +6x + 12 = 0 -5x² + x = 0
Following are the examples Below are the examples of a
of a quadratic equation in quadratic equation with an
absence of linear co – efficient ‘
factored form bx’
(x – 6)(x + 1) = 0  [ result 2x² – 64 = 0
obtained after solving is x² –
5x – 6 = 0] x² – 16 = 0
–3(x – 4)(2x + 3) = 0  [result
obtained after solving is -6x² + 9x² + 49 = 0
15x + 36 = 0]
-2x² – 4 = 0
(x − 5)(x + 3) = 0  [result
obtained after solving is x² − 4x² + 81 = 0
2x − 15 = 0]

FORMULA
Solving Quadratic
Equation by Factoring
FACTORING
● Often the easiest method of solving a quadratic equation
is factoring. Factoring means finding expressions that can be
multiplied together to give the expression on one side of the
equation.
● If a quadratic equation can be factored, it is written as a
product of linear terms. Solving by factoring depends on the
zero-product property, which states that if a*b=0, then a=0 and
b=0, where a and b are real numbers or algebraic expressions.
In other words, if the product of two numbers or two
expressions equals zero, then one of the numbers or one of the
expressions must equal zero because zero multiplied by
anything equals zero.
Steps in solving by factoring
1 . Transform the equation using standard form in which
one side is zero.
2 . Factor the non-zero side.
3 . Set each factor to zero (Remember: a product of
factors is zero if and only if one or more of the factors is
zero).
4 . Solve each resulting equation
By Completing
the square
By completing the square

● Completing the Square is a method used

to solve a quadratic equation by
changing the form of the equation so that
the left side is a perfect square trinomial
 .
Steps in Solving

1. ●Transform
the equation so that the constant term,  cc , is alone on the right side.
      2.  If a , the leading coefficient (the coefficient of the  term), is not equal to  11 , divide both
sides by aa .

      3.  Add the square of half the coefficient of the x -term,  ( to both sides of the equation.
      4.  Factor the left side as the square of a binomial.
      5.  Take the square root of both sides.
      6.  Solve for x .
EXAMPLE:
EXAMPLE
By Extracting
Square root
By extracting square root

•Extracting roots involves isolating the square and then applying

the square root property
Remember to include “±” when taking the square root of both
sides.
•After applying the square root property, solve each of the
resulting equations. Be sure to simplify all radical expressions and
rationalize the denominator if necessary.
Steps in Solving
● 1.) Put the constant in the right side of the equation.
● 2.) Divide both terms in the value of a in ax² + c=0.
● lIf the value of a is equal to one, proceed to the next
stage.
● 3.) Extract the roots of both terms by using the
radical sign (√).
● 4.) The square roots of the value of c are positive
and negative, therefore you can use this sign (±).
● 5.) In summary, the resulting equation will be x =
±√c
