ELECTRICAL WORK PERMIT

PURPOSE
To ensure safety of the employee working on or near electrical

equipments during activities execution.
To control the approval & execution authority of any activity by

voltage level and equipment service.
To prevent unexpected power isolation effecting normal operation of

the plant.

General Electrical Safety Precaution
1. The working on electrical system needs authorization. It is given by class room
training, OJT & Equipment Specific Training.
2. The safety instructions, warning cautions & operation hazard instructions are
displayed at entry of the substations, transformer yards & at all such places where it is
required to warn. NO ENTRY FOR UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL, ENTRY
RESTRICTED
3. For safety of persons working on or near electrical equipment and system,

ELECTRICAL LOCKOUT / TAG-OUT SYSTEM PROCEDURE is implemented.
4. The safe maintenance procedures are made for the safe working on electrical
equipments for different activities.
5. There are electrical safety equipments to be used for hazardous jobs.

Temporary Electrical Connections
1. Check the work permit for area.
2. Check the condition of equipments for temporary connections as per following:

A. Use approved make, checked & certified equipments.
B. The temporary connection must be GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter )
protected.
C. Do not use damaged cord or cord exposing inner wire or splice (joint) cord.
D. Do not keep the cord in water area, run through doors / pinch points, road crossing.
E. Do not use the plug not fully seated or loose in socket.

F. Uncoiled the cord to avoid self induction, use sufficient length cord, but avoid
lengthy cord.
G. Disconnect temporary connection directly after job completion.

Electric Work In Hazardous Area
1. No work shall be permitted on energized circuit in hazardous area.

2. All electric equipment and wiring shall be done as per hazardous area classification.
3. Before opening any equipment for troubleshooting, ensure the equipment surface is
cool & is safe to open.
4. During installation of new equipment, ensure its suitability for that area and away from
the rain water drain falling and away from wet surrounding.
5. No alteration or changes are allowed in hazardous area electrical equipments, as they
are certified for hazardous area.
6. Only certified spares, components of hazardous area equipments are to be used for
replacement.
7. All the equipments handling flammable liquid in hazardous area should be perfectly
grounded by exact size of grounding cables.

Responsibilities
Issuer of Electrical Work Permit (rack in / out & energize de-energize) shall be
done by minimum of an employee Supervisory level for the related activity or
approved delegated.
Receiver of Electrical Permit (rack in / out & energize de-energize) shall be done
by minimum of an employee or contractor Supervisory level for the related
activity or approved delegated.

exact area of intended work permit in the work area.

Whenever the permit is required to be extended, the work site conditions shall
be revalidated and the required gas test shall be re-performed and results
recorded. The extension date/ time to be filled in.
