Importance of markets in Islam

 Islam has accorded special attention to market. One of

the first actions taken by the Prophet (S.A.W) after
reaching al-Madinah was to order building a market
there.
 Trade and market deals played an important role in
spreading Islam through ethical realistic practices of
Islam and its morals, including tolerance, integrity, and
loyalty
Some of market etiquettes
 Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)
A Muslim should not cease remembering Allah in all his
conditions. If he enters the market, he should use the invocation
of Prophet which he said, “Whoever enters the market and says:
‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without
partner, to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise. He gives life
and causes death, and He is living and does not die. In His hand is
all good and He is Omnipotent over all things.’ Allah will wipe a
million bad deeds from his record and grant him a million good
deeds, and will elevate him a million degrees of virtue”
Some of market etiquettes
 Leniency in selling and buying
Prophet said, “May Allah’s mercy be on him who is
lenient in his buying, selling, and in demanding back his
money or debt”
Leniency means being easy-going and kindhearted in
dealing with others and in choosing good words.
Some of market etiquettes
 Not causing harm to others
Prophet said, “If anyone of you passed through our
mosque or through our market while carrying arrows, he
should hold firmly with his hand lest he should harm one
of the Muslims in it”
This compromises all forms of harm such as loud voice,
or not sticking to the queue in shopping.
Some of market etiquettes
 Lowering one’s gaze
People, men and women, mix with one another
repeatedly in markets and, therefore, lowering one’s
gaze becomes one of the necessities which preserve the
privacy and humanity of the person.
Allah says, “Say to the believing men that they should
lower their gaze and guard their modest: that will make
for greater purity for them”
