CHAPTER 1

Overture: What are rhythm and pulse?

• Rhythm and pulse are terms used to

describe sound patterns and beats
in music.
CHAPTER 1

Pulse in music

• Pulse is the steady continuous beat in music.

• When you tap your foot while listening to music, you are probably
tapping the pulse.
• The pulse is constant in a piece of music.
CHAPTER 1

Rhythm in music

• Rhythm is the pattern of long and short sounds in music.

• Pulse and rhythm are very closely related and are two similar
elements of music.
• The important difference between pulse and rhythm is that the pulse
is constant, while the rhythm can change.

Note values

• Notes are the individual sounds in music and each one has a value
or length.
• The different values all have a name and a number of beats.
• The number of beats signifies how long the sound is held for.
• We can also assign a symbol and a rhyme to each of the note values.
• Most of the symbols are made up of a head and a stem. The head is
the round part of the note and the stem is the straight line that comes
from it

• Quavers are the shortest note value we will learn about in this unit.
Quavers can be joined together by a beam.
• A beam is a horizontal line that joins together two or more quavers.
• A pair of quavers is the most common arrangement, but we can join
two pairs together if we need to, which makes a set of four quavers.

that match and suit each syllable.
• Here is an example:
CHAPTER 1

Body percussion

• Body percussion is when we use our bodies to create sounds.

• Ways we can do this include snapping our fingers and slapping our
legs.
• Can you think of any other ways to create body percussion sounds?
