ABSTRACT:
 Solar energy has been the subject of great development in the
past years, which led to the concept of Solar Roads. The solar
roadway series of the structurally engineered solar panel that is
driven upon. Solar roadway means the use of solar panel in
road pavement. It also means replace current petroleum based
asphalt road with a solar panel. A Solar roadway is a road
surface that generates electricity by solar power using
Photovoltaic and includes solar panels and LED signage, that
can be drive on. Solar power generation has emerged as one of
the most rapidly growing renewable sources of electricity solar
power generation has other advantages over another form of
electricity generation.
INTRODUCTION:
 Solar energy is the light and radiant heat from the Sun that influences
Earth's climate and weather and sustains life. In the environmental
context, it is also used to refer to the process of generation of
electricity by tapping the solar energy.
 Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or
active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute
solar energy. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic
panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy. Passive
solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting
materials with favorable thermal mass or light dispersing properties,
and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.
WHY SOLAR:
Solar energy is preferable as compares to another energy sources
due to following reasons:
 Reduced dependence on fossil fuels
 Environment friendly
 Matching peak time output with peak time demand
 Modularity and scalability
 Flexible locations.
PHOTOVOLTAIC CELL:

 This is active type of solar technology.

 Photovoltaic cells are used to convert solar energy directly in to
electricity using semi conductors.
SOLAR ROAD WAY:
 A solar road way is a road surface that generates electricity by solar
power photovoltaic cells embedded below a tough transparent surface
which provides sufficient traction.
SOLAR ROAD CONSTRUCTION:
A solar road way consist of 3 layers:
 Road surface layer/glass layer
 Electronics layer
 Base plate layer
ROAD SURFACE LAYER/GLASS LAYER:
 Translucent and high strength, it is rough enough to provide sufficient
traction, yet still passes sunlight through to the solar collector cells
embedded within, along with LEDs and a heating element.
ELECTRONICS LAYER:
 It contains photovoltaic cells which absorbs solar energy.
 It also contains a microprocessor board with support circuitry for
sensing loads on the surface and controlling a heating element with a
view to reducing or eliminating snow.
BASE PLATE LAYER:
 While the electronics layer collects energy from the sun, it is the base
plate layer that distributes that power as well as data signals (phones,
T.V, internet, etc.)down the line to all homes and weather proof to
protect the electronics layer above it.
ILLUMINATED ROADS:
 Many people driving their vehicle at night cannot see the road ahead
due to oncoming headlight or rain.
 The solar roadways will have LEDs which will illuminate the lanes.
 Thus the rate of accidents will be reduced and illumination of roads
will add aesthetics of the city.
A LOOK ON THE FUTURE:
SNOW MANAGEMENT:
When it comes to asphalt roads they get damaged when this snow is
melted and increases the maintenance cost. Budgets are also heavily
taxed for snow removal.
A Solar Roadway changes all of that. The roads heat themselves with
their embedded heating elements and melt away all the snow.
ROAD SURVEY OF INDIA:

 India had a road networks of over 42,45,805km in 2011.

 In which national highways and state highways cover 0.05% of total
road networks.
 These highways can produce 450TWh of electricity according to
references which they are surfaced by solar panels.
 But India needs 991TWh of electricity.
 This implies that if 0.1% of total road network of India is surfaced
with solar roadway panel, it would illuminate our nation.
ADVANTAGES:
 Renewability
 Life span
 Initial cost
 Road Illumination
 Intelligent Highway System
 Military and rescue assistance
DIS ADVANTAGES:
 Maintenance costs
 Seasonal efficiency
 Needs a town planning
CONCLUSION:
 For roughly the same cost of the current system (asphalt roads and
fossil fuel burning electricity generation plants),the solar roadways
can be implemented.
 No more Global warming.
 Far less pollution.
 No more dependency on foreign oil
FUTURE SCOPE:
 With the provision of initial investment it can be carried forward.
 Increased energy requirement in future can only be met with
renewable resources of energy, such as that obtained from solar
roadways.
 To reduce the consumption of fossil fuel and to eliminate global
warming, the innovative idea of solar panel road is inevitable.
