In this unit, you should be able to:
Distinguish the various roles of different individuals in society and how

Compare one’s perception of himself/herself and how others see him/her;

Activity 1. Simon Says
• Do a Trust Walk. Your class will be divided into several groups with a
maximum of six members each.
• Choose one guide to lead the group. The other five members will use a scarf to
cover their eyes. They will fall in line.
• They will listen to the voice of the guide as it gives directions.
• The guide must ensure that the members are safe and will not trip or bump so
he/she will lead them in safe areas to reach their destination with no bumps and
bruises.
• The first group to reach the designated area in the shortest amount of time is the
winning group.
Analysis
After the activity, answer the following questions:
 1. “How does it feel to walk blindfolded? Were you very

anxious?”
 2. “Was there pressure on the guides knowing that they
hold the safety of the members in their hands?”
 3. “What makes a strong leader?”

The community members encompass
those who live, work, play, learn, and
pray in a community. The members of
a community or society have roles to
play and duties and responsibilities to
uphold. They co-exist as a single unit.
The need for the members to build thriving
communities
A lasting change is impossible if there is no

involvement from the members of the community.
Their influence comes in different forms.
Example: Community members may be the youth
groups, the religious organizations, the ordinary
citizens, or the different families in a specific area.

The act of establishing and developing a

community takes several steps. The
cooperation among members makes it
possible to build an environment where
people are enjoying a high-quality of life.
This environment promotes equality,
compassion, and justice.
Difference between the
Status and Role
The word status can be described
as the position or rank that you have in a
community or a group of people.
The role can be described as your expected
behavior which depends on your status.
Types of Status:
Types of Status:
The status of a person can either be inherited or acquired.
Inherited Status. This is the type of status that is given to

you at birth.
Acquired Status. This is the type of status that is

determined by your knowledge,
skill, and ability.
Types of Status:
These are the two types of status, but this does
not mean that it is limited to being royal blood
or not. A person may inherit a status of being
a man or a woman, or have a specific
ethnicity.
An acquired status can be attained like a poor
child becoming a top businessman upon
reaching his 50s.
These are some examples of the
social institution where you belong:
the family, the government, the
economy, religion, education, and
medicine.
Leadership
Leadership can be defined as the guidance
of other people in their pursuits which is
often done by organizing, coordinating,
directing, supporting, and motivating
others. It is one’s ability to lead other
people.
Leadership is made up of processes where you
cooperate to influence and motivate the other
members with the goal of attaining goals.
These processes are:
Reciprocal
• It involves the leader, the members or followers, and the
situation of the group. In this process, the leader’s
responsibility is not just influencing the group; rather, the
leader-follower relationship is considered as mutual. In an
interactional perspective, leadership is not separated from
followership (the qualities and skills that are shown by non-
leaders). Both of them are related to each other.
Transactional
• This perspective views that the leaders and members
work together. They exchange efforts, time, and skills
to achieve joint rewards.
Transformational
• Leaders increase the motivation,
satisfaction, and confidence of the group.
This is done through the act of uniting the
members and modifying their values,
needs, and beliefs.
Cooperative.
• This is a process that promotes legitimate influence
instead of the use of power. Leadership is
voluntarily given to a person by some or all of the
members. When it is done, it is expected that the
leader is influenced by the collective needs of the
group instead of his/her interest.
Adaptive and goal-seeking
• Leaders organize and motivate the attempts
of the members to achieve both the personal
and group goals.
The Essential Qualities
• Leaders must be active listeners. They
do not just hear the message; they
understand what the message means.
• An effective leader can be both logical
and empathic. They can combine the
brain and the heart.
3. Effective leaders can give

compelling and clear messages.
4. Excellent leaders are visionaries.
5. Great leaders know how to care
for their people.
6. Effective leaders provide an

organized and clear structure.
7. Leaders get to the heart of the
problem and provide action.
8. Leaders are reflective. They give a
thoughtful analysis of their actions.
9. Great leaders know develop
potential leaders.
10. Leaders are team players.
These admirable qualities mark a great
leader, be warned though, that not all
leaders possess all these qualities.

as well.

Followership is the act of working with a leader and the

members of a group in an effective manner.
Based on this definition, both the leader and the
member must work together. It is a two-way process.
Effective leadership is not just based on the leader but
also on the level of cooperation given by the followers.
A leader may be telling the truth, but if the receiver
(audience) has already formed a dislike to the
leader, they may choose to ignore the truth that the
leader is saying.
A leader may be very intelligent, but he could not

convince his members because he could not explain
his message in a way that he can be understood by
his ordinary members.
