5 Abstract:

 Coffee is one of the most important beverage crops, ranked the second most
traded commodity next to oil globally, and grown for
 health values,
 economic and socio-political benefits for several countries including Ethiopia.
 The Arabica type is a highly produced coffee in different countries and
dominates 70% of the world coffee trade for its quality requirements.

 It was first originated and is still there naturally under the shadow of the forest
canopy in Ethiopia and best adapted to the higher elevations for the best quality.

1. site selection

2. preparation and

3. field transplant of the seedlings) at selected production areas.

Project Description
 Overview of the Resilient Landscapes and Livelihoods Project (RLLP)
 The SLMP-II was closed by the end of December 2018 and its follow-up project
called RLLP to support SLMP is being prepared.
 The RLLP aims to create resilience to the treated landscape and improve
the productivity and livelihoods through the provision of capital investments,
technical assistance and capacity building at
 national,
 regional,
 woreda,
 kebele and community levels 06/15/2024
8 Objective of RLLP project
 The RLLP will build on the results of SLMP I & II and will also introduce
measures

 to address climate change/variability related risks,

 minimize Green House Gas (GHG) emission

 reductions so as to meet the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) and the
Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) goals of the country.

 The results of the project will be measured by the landscape to be put under
sustainable and climate resilient land management practices and the amount of
total carbon sequestered per unit area and time. 06/15/2024

15 Objectives of the practical attachment

General Objectives
 Orienting students to practical and scientific activities in the field of horticulture and
Plant Sciences so that they will discover the rigors of solving scientific problems in
the field and come up with concrete results.

06/15/2024
16 Specific Objectives
 To identify and prioritize the problems associated with agricultural development
work, understand their environment/working situation so as to make them creative
and problem solving;
 To improve the profile of graduates in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude on
filed work .
 To give the trainees an opportunity to introduce or practice the skills developed to
the real working atmosphere.
 To familiarize the students with different agricultural technologies.
 To enable the trainees understand different methodologies for data collection,
analysis, report writing and presentation.

06/15/2024
17 Materials and Methods
 I have used different material during my practical attachment ;
 Meter : Used to measure the width and height of the nursery bead
 String : Used to keep the line or to prepare the plot
 Hammer :Used to make stake
 Mobiles :to communicate extension worker
 DAP and UREA fertilizer: to increasing soil fertility
 Shovel : To remove the digging soil et.c

18 My task in Chat” Kebele Mea’nit Goldia District, West
Omo South-western Ethiopia field station

 I was given many tasks during my stay in the Chat” Kebele Mea’nit Goldia
District, West Omo South-western Ethiopia field station.
 I was expected to help them during their practical work including
 Site selection
 Site preparation
 Nursery establishment
 Finally coffee establishment

06/15/2024
COFFEE ESTABLISHMENT
19

 Coffee (coffee)is a large genus (containing more than 90 species )of flowering
plants in the family Rubiaceae.

 in Ethiopia almost 85%of used such as C.Arabica which is organized in Ethiopia,

other such as C.canephora,C.liberica

 Seed of several species are the source of the beverages coffee .

 Coffee is usually propagated by seeds

06/15/2024
20 required for coffee establishment
 The field for coffee establishment is made ready six months
before planting.

 Flat ground is required for coffee establishment.

 The Ares should not have many trees which may result into
shading.

 There should be a reliable source of water for the nursery

seedlings.

 Nursery should be established 1m wide to make handling easier. 06/15/2024

21
When to start the nursery

Steep 1 :the filde have been redy for

nursery preparation.
The field must be :
 The soils must be fertile .
 The land must not be sloppier . Land
 The land must be shaded area .
 The area must be efficient amount of
water source .et.c

06/15/2024

Steep 2: the nursery should be prepared

 Nursery should be established 1m
wide
 Nursery should be established 10 m
length
 The length should be depends on
your objectives .

23
Cont.…….
Steep 3: the seedlings inserted in to the
nursery
 The covering part is important for
 To reduce water evaporation
 To prevent Havier sun lights
 Cover beds with rice straw mulch to
give extra heat and to retain soil
moisture

24 Cont.……
Steep 4 :

 This stage known as Mach stick stage .

 the seeding growing at 45 days

 Germination is first seen in the appearance of the

radicle (young root) three to four weeks after sowing.

 The hypocotyl (the part between soil and cotyledons

appears 20 to 25 days later and carries the seed which
is still covered in its parchment, out of the ground

06/15/2024
25
Coffees planting
Steep 5 this stage the coffee have been is at two
leave stage .
 This stage known as butter fly stage
 The distance between the two seedlings is
approach to 8-10cm.
 Width =1m and length =10m.
 In one nursery it contains 1000 seedlings
 Totally there are 25 nursery so it contains
250000 seedlings are there .

06/15/2024
26 Some problems during seedling stages
 Diseases that affect the seeding such as
 Damping off
 Brown eye spot
 Brown leave spot
 Inserts such as
 Aphid
 Cut worms
 Control methods
 Appling of chemical (insecticides)
 Agronomic practices et.c

06/15/2024
27 the health benefits of coffee?

 Coffee helps you lose weight. ...

 Coffee helps with depression. ...

 Coffee is nutritious. ...

 Coffee can act as pain relief. ...

 Coffee is a great way to get more fiber. ...

 Coffee decreases the risk of Diabetes. ...

 Coffee decreases the risk of heart disease.

Strength/weakness of organization
28

 Strength of RLLP project(Resilient Landscapes and Livelihoods Project of

MoA)

 To work with the group

 It crates job opportunities for farmers

 It provides different access like irrigation ,land,DAP &UREA.

06/15/2024
29 weakness of RLLP project

 There is no enough business to get different technology .

 There Is no compost (organic fertilizer) preparation in the FTC (farmer training

center ).

 It doesn’t work with correct fertilizer applications such like ;

 DAP &UREA fertilizer .

06/15/2024
30 OVERALL ATTACHMENT EXPERIENCES

 The attachment experience was very important and I appreciate this course as it
enabled me to know many things additional to theoretical knowledge.

 I appreciate this coarse because it is a big chance for the student and it creates
opportunity for the student .

 I was able to get many practical skill during my stay in the center for instance I was
practicing how to prepare the coffee nursery establishment.

 Further to that I learned many work skills like using of time properly, punctuality,
hostility and communication skills. Further to this I was able to know more about
06/15/2024
31 Recommendations:

 I have recommend to the farmers in order to make compost preparation in order

to reduce the cost of inorganic fertilizer .

 I have recommend to the farmers they use with correct fertilizer applications
such like ;

 DAP &UREA fertilizer .

06/15/2024
32 Conclusion

 Generally I have concluded that this practical attachment is important to :

 To Increased my practical knowledge that compared to theoretical knowledge

 To increase my communication skills to the farmers .

 To solve the community related problems of agricultural activities

 To known planting systems of coffees plants
