Wastewater Treatment - OGS
Introduction
Wastewater
Both the BOD and COD tests are a measure of the relative
oxygen-depletion effect of a waste contaminant .
Both have been widely adopted as a measure of pollution
effect.
The BOD test measures the oxygen demand of
biodegradable pollutants.
The COD test measures the oxygen demand of oxidizable
pollutants.
Wastewater treatment
Priority pollutants Organic and inorganic compounds selected on the basis of their known or
suspected carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, teratogenicity, or high acute
toxicity. Many of these compounds are found in wastewater.

a. Organic Matter
Organic compounds that have a boiling point less than < 100
°C and/or a vapour pressure > 1 mm Hg at 25 °C are generally
considered to be volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The release of these compounds in sewers and at treatment
plants is of particular concern with respect to the health of
collection system and treatment plant workers.
