REVIEW:
 How is an Arithmetic Sequence formed?
 Arithmetic sequence is formed when every
term after the first is obtained by adding a
constant (common difference (d)).
REVIEW:
 How can the common difference in an
arithmetic sequence be obtained?
 Common difference (d) is the constant
number added to the preceding term of the
arithmetic sequence.
 It
can be calculated by subtracting any two
consecutive terms in the arithmetic
Take-home Activity: (Checking)
1. Follow-up:
a) Can the common difference be negative? If so,
describe the sequence.
Answer: Yes, the common difference in an arithmetic
sequence can be negative. When this happens, the
sequence is called a decreasing arithmetic sequence.
In such a sequence, each term is less than the
previous term by a constant amount.
For example, if the first term is 10 and the common
difference is -2, the sequence would be 10, 8, 6, 4, 2,
and so on.

Nth Term of an
Arithmetic
Sequence
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the session, you should be able to determine
arithmetic means and nth term of an arithmetic sequence

(M10AL-Ib-c-1).

Specifically,
a. Find the nth term of an arithmetic sequence.
b. Apply either of the two formulas to find the missing
terms, n, , and d of an arithmetic sequence
c. Appreciate arithmetic sequence in solving real life
problems
Review Activity:
 Find
the nth term of the given arithmetic sequence
below.
1, 4, 7, 10

 Give the 10th term of the same sequence.

 Emer is a runner from Legazpi City. He plans to join an
ultramarathon of 50 km from Legazpi City Boulevard to Sto.
Domingo next month. During the first day of his training, he ran
5 km from Maslog to Taysan. To improve his stamina and
endurance, he increased the distance he runs by 1.5 km every
day.
 What is the distance that he will run on the 7th day of his
training?
Does the distance that Emer will run
every day show an arithmetic sequence?
Why?
Observe the pattern and find the
nth term.
a1 = 5 + 1.5 How many
a2 = 5 + 1.5 +1.5 kilometers
a3 = 5 + 1.5 +1.5 +1.5 by: a. 7th
a4 = 5 + 1.5 +1.5 + 1.5 +1.5 week?
a5 = 5 + 1.5 +1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 +1.5 b. 40th week?
c. 200th

week?
an = 5 + 1.5n :
d. nth week?
QUESTION:
 How do we find the nth term in an
arithmetic sequence?
 Thenth term of an arithmetic sequence can be
obtained by 2 types of formulas:
 the recursive and explicit formulas.

Two Formulas

APPLYING THE
FORMULAS
(Finding the nth term)
Example 1: What is the 10th term of the arithmetic
sequence 5, 12, 19, 26, …?
Since the first 4 terms are already
Solution: Using Recursive Formula given, then we find the succeeding
terms until we get the value of the 10th
Given: =26 , and d=7, then term, :

,
,
,
,
,
.
Example 1: What is the 10th term of the arithmetic
sequence 5, 12, 19, 26, …?

Solution: By Explicit Formula

Given: =5 , n = 10, and d = 7, then

• It is much faster and can give you direct answers if you use the
explicit formula.
Example 2: What is the 21st term of the arithmetic
sequence 7, 13, 19, 25, …?
Since the first 4 terms are already
Solution 1: Using Recursive Formula given, then we find the succeeding
terms until we get the value of the 21st
Given: =25 , and d=6, then term, :

,
,
,

,
.
Example 2: What is the 21st term of the arithmetic
sequence 7, 13, 19, 25, …?

Solution 2: By Explicit Formula

Given: =7, n=21, and d=6, then

• It is much faster and can give you direct answers if you use the
explicit formula.
Example 3: What is the nth term of the arithmetic
sequence 5, 12, 19, 26, …?
Solution: By Explicit Formula

Example 4: What is the nth term of the arithmetic
sequence 7, 13, 19, 25, …?

variables)
Example 5: In the arithmetic sequence 5, 9, 13, 17, …
which term is 401?

Solution: Solving for n, we have

The problem asks for n when
= 401. From the given
sequence, = 5, d = 4 and =
401.
Substituting these values in
the formula, we have
Therefore, 401 is the 100th term.
Example 6: What is the common difference of an
arithmetic sequence if = 3, = 179, and n=45?

Solution: Solving for d, we have

The problem asks for d.
From the given sequence, =
3, = 4 and = 179.
Substituting these values in
the formula, we have

Therefore, 4 is the common difference.

Example 7: Find the first term of an arithmetic
sequence if d = 3, =62, and n=20?

Solution: Solving for , we have

The problem asks for .
From the given sequence,
d=3, =62 and n=20.
Substituting these values in
the formula, we have

Therefore, 5 is the first term of the sequence.
