What is “POLLUTION”?
 The presence of substances in the environment which are toxic and have
harmful impact on the surrounding as well as the impact of human
actions on the quality of aquatic and terrestrial environment is known as
pollution.
EXAMPLES OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
 Carbon dioxide and Methane gas
 Sewage
 Fertilizers
 Plastic
 Pesticides
TYPES OF POLLUTION

WATER POLLUTION LAND POLLUTION AIR POLLUTION

HOW ARE WE POLLUTING THE ENVIRONMENT?
 Sewage:
Sewage pollution can allow diseases such as cholera diarrhea, dysentery,
hepatitis A, typhoid and polio to spread. Bacteria of diseases like typhoid
and cholera can contaminate drinking water through the faeces of the
infected person and spread to a huge population.
For this reason, among others, untreated sewage must not be emptied into
rivers, and must be treated at sewage works so the human waste can
broken down by bacteria and made harmless.
 Pesticides:
Marine habitat around the globe are becoming contaminated with pesticides..
Pesticides may become more concentrated as they move along the food chain a. In
large organisms, the concentration can be toxic. DDT, an insecticide, was banned in
US and India due to its adverse effects on wildlife and humans.
-Soluble pesticides were carried away by water molecules especially during the
precipitation event by percolating downward into the soil layers and eventually
reach surface waters and groundwater. Consequently, it degrades water quality and
reduces the supply of clean water for potable water-
 FERTILIZERS:
Large concentration of nitrate(NO3) and phosphate(PO4) from
sewage and farmlands cause excessive growth of microscopic
plants, this results in shortage of oxygen in water for the marine life,
resulting in death of aquatic animals and threatens the whole
ecosystem.

 DISCARDED PLASTIC:
Plastic is not biodegradable, meaning, it can not be decomposed or
broken down by decomposers when left as litter. This means that
they remain in the environment taking up valuable space or causing
visual pollution. Either this or the plastic is burned which is also
going to cause air pollution.
As the plastics in water gradually deteriorate, they fragment into
tiny
pieces which are then eaten by fish and birds, making them ill.
EUTROPHICATION
 Eutrophication is the enrichment of natural waters with nutrients
that allow the water to support an increasing amount of plant life.
This process takes place naturally in many inland waters, but is
usually very slow. The large amount of enrichments that results
from human activities leads to an overgrowth of microscopic
algae.
 Eutrophication is caused by nitrate and phosphate runoff from
farmlands, effluent from aquaculture ponds as well as municipal
and industrial discharge. Factory farming and Use of Detergents,
with high phosphate levels, are the main cause of eutrophication
in this age.
