Lesson 2

Arithmetic Sequences
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able

to
● accurately find the common difference and the
th term of an arithmetic sequence;

● correctly determine the arithmetic means

between two nonconsecutive terms; and

● correctly solve problems involving arithmetic

sequence.
Essential Questions

● How will you find the th term of an arithmetic

sequence?

● How will you solve for the arithmetic means between

two non-consecutive terms?
Warm Up!

For this lesson, we will discuss about arithmetic

sequence. Before we proceed, let us watch this video to
learn more about the connection of music and math.

How did Beethoven compose music?
Perhaps with some sequences and series.
Guide Questions

● How did Beethoven use sequences to compose

music?

● Consonance is similar to addition of patterns. Do you

agree? Why or why not?

● How can you apply the concept of arithmetic

sequences in composing or even just enjoying music?
Learn about It!

Arithmetic sequence (also known as an

1 arithmetic progression)
a sequence where each term after the first is obtained by adding a
constant (called the common difference) to the preceding term

Example:

Term
2 each value in a sequence

Example:

The 1st term is 4, 2nd term is 8, 3rd term is 12, 4th term
is 16 and so on.

General term of a sequence

3 the formula used to find the th term of a sequence, which is , where is the
th term, is the first term, is the number of terms and is the common
difference

Example:

In the sequence , the 10th term can be found by

substituting the values to the general term formula.

Arithmetic means
4 the terms between any two nonconsecutive terms of an arithmetic
sequence
Example:

In the sequence , 8 and 12 are two arithmetic means

between 4 and 16.

Example 1: Find the 20th term in the sequence

Solution: First, identify the common difference of the

sequence.

Thus, the common difference is 7.

Example 1: Find the 20th term in the sequence

Solution: Substitute values to the general formula to

find the 20th term of the sequence.

Example 1: Find the 20th term in the sequence

Solution:

Therefore, the 20th term of the given sequence is 139.

Example 2: Find the 30th term of an arithmetic

sequence, if the 5th term is and the common difference
is 6.

Example 2: Find the 30th term of an arithmetic

sequence, if the 5th term is and the common difference
is 6.

Solution: Use the formula for arithmetic sequence.

Then, substitute the given information.

Since the first term is unknown, solve it first by

substituting , , and to the formula.

Example 2: Find the 30th term of an arithmetic

sequence, if the 5th term is and the common difference
is 6.

Solution: Substitute , , and to the formula.

Example 2: Find the 30th term of an arithmetic

sequence, if the 5th term is and the common difference
is 6.

Solution: Then, solve for the 30th term of the sequence

Example 2: Find the 30th term of an arithmetic

sequence, if the 5th term is and the common difference
is 6.

Solution:

Since , the 30th term of the sequence is 140.

Let’s Practice!

Individual Practice:

1. Given the arithmetic sequence

, find the 10th term.

2. The 4th term of an arithmetic sequence is and the

6th term is . Write the first eight terms of the
sequence.
Let’s Practice!

Group Practice: To be done in 2 to 5 groups

Patricio decided to join a gym’s weight loss program.

One week after joining, Patricio starts losing a constant
amount of weight. Five weeks after joining the gym, he
weighs 165kg. Ten weeks after joining the gym, he
weighs 150 kg. Assuming that the pattern continues,
find his weight before joining the gym and the amount
of weight he lost per week. Is a weight loss program a
good application for an arithmetic sequence? Explain
your answer.
