Welcome to the Archives

Something uncanny stalks these shelves. Our dedicated archivists preserve all that is strange in this world. Enter our collections and see what others want you to forget.

Dearest Researchers,

First, I would like to thank you for your interest in our humble archive. Second, I understand that most of you are more familiar with my predecessor, who has successfully completed his duties and since left the institute (may he rest in peace). Some may have heard rumors that I am lacking in certain qualities necessary for our field, such as lying, wheedling, and a penchant for violence. Due to the truth clauses of research communications, I can neither confirm nor deny these statements. I can, however, assure you that I shall be just as competent as my predecessor in curating this archive.

You know what our Archive really needed? MORE LETTERS!

In our Newsletter, we're planning to share some fiction, campaigns (like our preorder campaign!), and articles about once a month.

AND, because the Archivist wants nothing more than to make people read, the first 50 subscribers will get also get a 50% discount on digital copies of both the magazine and Revenge Arc, as well as 15% off physical copies! We'll be sending that out as we get subscribers.

HAPPY RELEASE DAY! It's March 15!

Happy Ides of March, and more importantly... the release of our newest, creepiest, weirdest and most un-dead issue to date.

P.S. The Head Archivist would like it known that: due to a loophole in our contract with the fae that usually manage our physical order delivery, preorders will be shipped from Ingram directly; we won't be able to control arrival dates. You can always email us with questions.

No offense but I think some of you would be a lot happier writing a fictional atlas or encyclopedia instead of a narrative story

Concur! Go forth and write your Dragonology and your Guidebook to Fairyland! Write a traveler's diary of a setting! These are fun and legitimate things to do!

I love books that are literally just this!

Heyyyy Gurl....

I know it's been so long since we last talked, but- Guess who's back from the dead! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

That's right! Archive of the Odd Issue #5: Cogito Error, featuring Necromancy is an MLM: A Thread by โœจRose Cieslaโœจis coming March 15th!

Keep an eye on our page, babes! ๐Ÿ’‹

Heads up, we've got another submissions period coming your way!

(AOTO Issue 6 opens Sept 15!)

Submissions call for issue 6 is officially OPEN!

Have some found fiction for us?

From our Website:

All submissions must be speculative found fiction. We do not accept traditional prose or poetry, and all submissions must be speculative in nature.

Submissions sent before or after opening dates will be deleted unread. Feel free to resubmit after opening, however! Mistakes happen.

We read submissions sight unseen, so please do not include personal information (name, address, email, etc.) in the document. Please include your name in your cover letter, though!

Simultaneous submissions are wonderful, as are multiple submissions.

Reprints are also welcome, as long as you have the rights and let us know its publication history.

Celebrating Our New Release Chapbooks!

The Same Stars by Dori Lumpkin:

Petronille Blackstone is searching for answers. After years of debilitating illness, her research for a treatment leads her both across the country and deep into her family's past. Her brother, however, is all too eager to keep her in his grip.

Performance of a Lifetime by Emma E. Murray:

Juniper Fleiss's performance art work pushes the boundaries of violence and taboo in art, centered on themes of misogyny and mental health. We present a collection of her most extreme works through her career, asking a question of the audience: How much of art is pain?

Lighthouse Logbook No. 28 by Daniel Simonson:

The lighthouse keepers of The Reunified Territories have a long and storied history, staving off maritime disaster and recording what occurs at the very edges of the world. It is only within the archival record, however, that we can begin to unravel what happened one eventful season at the Spur.

Tags that remind me that we are also open for Long Fiction queries (It's just a different submissions process)

If you've written the next House of Leaves (please please please) send us an email to archiveoftheodd@gmail.com.

  • Please send a query letter with the title and length of your piece, as well as a synopsis. For works under 50,000 words, send a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file with the work in its entirety (name removed to remain sight unseen).
  • For pieces whose formatting is required to understand the story, or with extensive artwork, .pdf is also acceptable.
  • We will respond with an estimated reply date, which will vary depending on our current workload, but will never be longer than 6 months. Generally, if you submit during our short fiction open period, we will start reading after our story selection for the zine, which occurs approximately a month after closing date. After that, please give us at least another month to respond (two months after closing date total). Expected wait for submissions between open periods varies depending our current workload, but is generally shorter.
