Ello?

@beowulf22121

I'm your odd friendly uncle now. Stop in and say hi, maybe you'll get an odd bit of information, maybe a story, maybe you need to ask for advice. I don't know, I just try to put some good out there when I can, just need to know where it's needed and where it's welcome first.

Getting a lot of new followers lately. Feels like I should say hi.

Hello.

Few things.

I follow the belief that if all are welcome, the end result is that only predators stay, because they chase away everyone else. So when I say something like "All are welcome" please note that I've also got no issue with saying "punch all nazis." On that note, I've got no issue if you're vegatarian, vegan, and so on. When you come into my space to tell me your way is the best way and that I'm a bad person? Try that in meatspace and I will fight you.

Second. This is the internet. As much as I want to promise this place is safe, all I can say is I do what I can to shut down bigotry in my section of it. I try not to reblog things to say "Hey look at this idiot" but sometimes I'm in a mood and an idiot is just that dumb. Eventually you'll see a little bit of everything here.

third: The only two constants in my life from childhood to now have been skepticism, and Dungeons and Dragons.

As for skepticism, I'd love to believe in so many things, ghosts, yeti, magic, creatures of all sorts, the old gods, (The Old Man holds a place in my heart regardless of his realness) but at the end of the day, to quote Tim Minchin: "Every mystery ever solved has turned out to be, not magic." But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the idea, I've tutoted young Pagans on what things meant to those who came before them and walked experienced folk through new things to them they hadn't had a hand in yet. I enjoy it, I just can't dedicate to it.

As for d&d, let's nerd it up. Talk to me, ask questions, tell stories. I love smashing together ideas and seeing what happens. My latest moment that sticks out in my head is when I mentioned a dragon with levels in sorcerer. One of my players didn't realize that was an option and had his worldview exanded, it was great watching him adjust to the idea.

Fourth: Hello again. I'm sure I missed something, but so be it, life goes on.

Queer history fact: Billy Lee Tipton(1914-1989), a jazz musician who managed to marry five times without anyone finding out that he did not have the genitals a cisgender man is expected to have, had a son who said of his father:

“I think he probably never told us because he was afraid we might have rejected him. I could have accepted it. He did a helluva good job with us. That’s what mattered. He was my dad.”

Cory Booker fasted and stood all day and all night and spoke till his voice nearly gave out for his constituents. And Republicans can't even show up to town halls. The contrast could not be starker. Let Senator Booker be an inspiration to us all. "The power of the people is greater than the people in power."

Cory Booker has been talking in the senate for over 20 hours now

He’s not filibustering. He’s protesting the current administration.

For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.

Senator Cory Booker isn’t doing that. He’s disrupting “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able”. Just in protest. This doesn’t usually happen.

He’s less than 20 minutes away from breaking the record of the longest speech given on the senate floor

Cory Booker has officially broken Strom Thurmond’s record for longest speech on the senate floor and he’s still going

For those of you wondering what he’s been talking about this whole time, his staff wrote down a bunch of stuff for him to read like stories from people across the political spectrum opposed to what the administration is doing. He’s also been telling personal anecdotes about meeting important civil rights leaders and other democratic senators have been pausing him for “questions” but the questions have been as long as a small speech and have both served the purpose of giving him a second to sit down and updating him on the news that he’s been missing while he’s been talking.

He has yielded the floor at 25 hrs and 4 mins. His eyes are so wide they look like they’re going to bug out of his skull so I don’t blame him for stopping. He said to go out and get in some good trouble.

Addition for those unaware: Cory Booker is black. Strom Thurmond set the previous record about 70 years ago in protest of civil rights. Booker spent much of the time I was watching talking about the importance of working together for the people and the idea that it's not "left versus right but right versus wrong."

The new record speech is on the right side of history.

Minor correction: the questions from other Democrats did not allow him to sit down as he must remain standing and at his desk in order to retain the floor. Additionally, I believe the final time was 25 hours and 7 minutes.

Self correction: final time 25 hours 5 minutes.

Sorry, I could never be a capitalist, I suffer from “wanting humans to have their basic needs met” disorder, where I care about people who aren’t me.

Someone once asked me if, assuming we got universal healthcare, I would be okay with the rise in “healthcare tourism” where people who are sick come to our country to get their medical bills taken care of and life-saving medical treatment cheaper than in their home countries. I was just like, yeah thats fine, I’d actually prefer it if 0 people died from preventable causes kept behind a paywall for no reason.

“even the addicts?” yeah dude did i fucking stutter

“even the people with permanent disabilities who will be taking up these resources forever” uh yeah especially them

I love telling people that Gary gygax was a biological essentialist because they always are so reticent to believe it. Like. he literally proudly said it out loud. Also have you ever actually read D&D? like. 3/4ths of everything is ontologically evil from birth

"As a biological determinist, I am positive that most females do not play RPGs because of a difference in brain function" - Gary Gygax

the funniest part about this quote is that if I’m remembering right he was talking about his wife and daughter not wanting to play D&D with him

This was the full passage that that quote is a part of. (The final emoji was an eye-rolling GIF, though you can't really tell in the screenshot).

Here's another quote by Gary Gygax in case it wasn't clear enough what a horrible person he really was

didn't he also comment a lawful good character would kill orc babies as 'nits make lice' I think referencing a slogan encouraging the genocide of natives

besides that, as a minor point, he was a tax evading libertarian, which is supposedly why the chaotic good alignment exists, which is more funny but y'know

This is his quote in full for those who might wish to see it. Chivington, if you might not know, was the perpetrator of the Sand Creek Massacre, an atrocity by any possible standard, even those of the time. He was found guilty by a congressional investigation, on the back of testimony by Silas Soule and some of his men, a captain under his command who refused to take part. Soule was murdered a few months later by a man who had served under Chivington (which, gee, no way to know how that happened).

This is the guy who Gygax thinks defines lawful good.

Have you ever looked closely at a car windshield?

The edge of the glass is painted where it is glued to the car but it has these small dots between the clear and painted glass.

These are there for a reason. When the sun hits the glass the painted areas and the clear areas will absorb heat at different rates. This causes the glass to expand and contract differently putting stress on the glass.

These dots help the glass to warm up more evenly over a larger area so the glass does not suffer stress that could cause it to spontaneously explode.

Fun fact: the Tesla cybertruck doesn’t have these.

Yes, the glass will spontaneously crack or explode in the sun.

He was as tall as he was tall, and his eyes were the color they were. To describe his hair one would say that he had some. His face had all the features you'd expect, and none of the ones you wouldn't. "There he is," people would often say of him, but only when he was there. And they were right.

Guy: “So what does X mental illness feel like?”

Me: “Feels like shit, bro.”

Guy: “Hmmm. I don’t think so”

Cool so like what if I hit you with a rock. What would that feel like hypothetically

I once had a licensed professional medical doctor tell me to my face within 7 minutes of meeting me that I didn’t have depression because truly depressed people don’t use metaphors.

The metaphor I used was, “I know that all these little day to day things shouldn’t be this hard- taking a shower, eating, getting out of bed- but it feels like everything I try to do, everywhere I go, I’m dragging a king-sized mattress around with me.”

So like. I guess expanding on the idea, don’t just mean “don’t tell me it’s not bad”. I kind of also wanna say, “you asked me how it felt and I fucking told you, so maybe listen to what I say when you ask instead of picking apart how I said it or how it fits within your idea of what it might be like in theory

If you would like to fight them, I am with you in spirit.

Unless you'd like to buy me a plane ticket to come visit, then I'll hold their arms for you to get a few good shots at their ribs.

Ao3 does not need an algorithm, you're just lazy

Ao3 does not need a 1-5 star rating system, you just want to bring down authors writing for FREE

Ao3 does not need automatic censorship, it is an archive, therefore anything can be posted

Writing or reading about something illegal does not mean the author nor the reader condones it, if that were true, you could never read a story involving anything negative

Purity culture is ruining fan culture and you all are fucking annoying

I hate when you catch yourself having a thought that hints at deeper insanities than previously imagined

whenever I am given a choice of flavors I always always always have plain chocolate ice cream

just now I opened the freezer and saw that my parents had a choice between plain chocolate and moose tracks.

“the moose tracks look pretty good,” I thought

“NO!” shrieked the tiny demon that lives inside my mind and churns out madnesses

“but what’s the matter?” I asked it

“TO CHOOSE OTHER THAN CHOCOLATE WOULD BE DISLOYAL!” it screeched

“I am thirty or forty years old” I told it, and grabbed the moose tracks, for which it has been punishing me with a miasma of dread and guilt
