A prominent computer scientist who has spent 20 years publishing academic papers on cryptography, privacy, and cybersecurity has gone incommunicado, had his professor profile, email account, and phone number removed by his employer, Indiana University, and had his homes raided by the FBI. No one knows why. ... Fellow researchers took to social media over the weekend to register their concern over the series of events. "None of this is in any way normal," Matthew Green, a professor specializing in cryptography at Johns Hopkins University, wrote on Mastodon. He continued: "Has anyone been in contact? I hear he’s been missing for two weeks and his students can’t reach him. How does this not get noticed for two weeks???" In the same thread, Matt Blaze, a McDevitt professor of computer science and law at Georgetown University, said: "It's hard to imagine what reason there could be for the university to scrub its website as if he never worked there. And while there's a process for removing tenured faculty, it takes more than an afternoon to do it."

seeing as they show them on the road & dorothy in the (not her fault! this kid was manipulated, forcefed the propaganda & launched into the most bizarre drama she had no context for) stolen shoes, i wonder if they'll give us occasional cuts to dorothy, the lion, the tin man & the scarecrow on their journey because i for one like to see an updated version featuring moments of dorothy & the lion having a lovely walk together whilst the scarecrow tries to take the tin man out in the background.

There's so many layers to what's going on with Joe Hills and the Permit Office right now, but in catching up to videos I missed while out of town, I got struck by something. Joe kept mentioning that he's been told to record or stream any time he logs onto the server - and has had times where he wasn't, logged into a trap, and immediately started recording/streaming. This has a few effects.
- Absolutely feeding into Joe's paranoia. A "friendly reminder" that the POE *are* coming for him at any time, and in and of itself a veiled threat. "Don't be on without recording; we *are* going to get you, and you don't want your audience to miss that moment, do you?"
- Joe's heavy emphasis on streaming and using that for his recordings means that it's very difficult for him to create anything more in secrecy under these new rules. The POE have created a secret bunker that they hide all location evidence of in their videos - Joe can't really do that the same right now.
- Following from above, all of Joe's previous preparations from before this rule are slowly being knocked out one by one. Stasis chambers are being found and trapped. Common stashes he uses are being removed. Potential allies are being cut off. The drain of this extended hunt isn't just his gear - it's Time as a resource as well. They know he can't rebuild his defenses as easily as before.
The psychological warfare of a simple piece of content advice.

You might be frustrated by the library never having a complete manga collection on its shelves at any given time, but the 12 year old checking out 14 volumes of One Piece at once is vital to the library ecosystem. He's like the sea otter keeping the kelp forest from being devastated by an excess of sea urchins.
To those curious some other keystone library species include:
—the retirees who’ve read more murder mysteries than I’ve had hot meals
—the paperback romance girlies (gender neutral) who check out every single bodice ripper the second it hits the shelves
—the dads very slowly making their way through a ‘1001 movies to see before you die’ list
—the one-man criterion collection who checks out like, three movies per day and brings them back the next. (TV series are only a minor roadblock.)
—kids who like Minecraft

something that should be taken with a grain of salt are the statistics talking about the high rates of mental illness + neurodivergence among trans people (ocd, bpd, adhd, autism, etc)
I see both sides of the political spectrum taking these studies at face value - conservatives say we're broken, and trans people try to come up with reasons why for example autism + gender dysphoria makes sense and why one of them feeds into another
at the end of the day you have to remember that we're the one category of people on this planet who are legally required to go see a psychiatrist in order to receive non-psychiatric medication and surgeries.
more trans people are in therapy by law than any other demographic of people, and as a result, this captures more comorbidities.
if I had to look at my own family & rates of mental illness?
mom, dad, 2 maternal aunts, maternal grandmother, paternal grandmother, sister, sibling, and me all have OCD.
7/9 of them are cishet, never been to therapy, never diagnosed. 2/9 are trans, required therapy for hormone treatment, and were diagnosed.
you don't have to do any math to just see that the resulting statistics end up intensely skewed.
and we can think back to how autism was virtually never diagnosed more than 50 years ago - ruling out any grandparents being included in statistics - and even my parents' generation (they're in their 60s now) wouldn't have been included either.
I don't think it's to anyone's benefit to accept these studies uncritically. a lot of these things are hereditary and far more prevalent in the overall population than people realize
