Summary: Todd needs a math tutor and the reader is a perfect candidate
Help: Please let me know, do people enjoy the use of Y/N? I tried not to use it because I hear people say its cringe to see in fanfics. I personally don't mind it at all but let me know what you think!! While you are here, does anyone know what the room where the students were chilling and studying (the one Pitts and Meeks were making the radio in) is called? I called it a study lounge but if you know what that type of room was let me know! p.s. please read the author's note at the end!
After your final class for the day, you decided to head to the Student Study Lounge. You had a math assignment you wanted to quickly wrap up and the Study Lounge was one of your favorite places to work. You admired the ambiance that the quiet chattering provided, the noise helped you focus.
Today when you entered the room you were shocked that the room was particularly silent. You noticed that one of the usual groups (the poets, I don't want to list everyone out) that frequented this area was missing. You were a little disappointed, partly because they provided most of your study noise but mostly because you were secretly looking forward to seeing one member of the group. Todd Anderson.
It's so silly to be disappointed about his absence when you've never even really had any interaction with him before. In fact, you've had conversations with each of his friends individually at some point in time, but never him. He always mystified you though. The way he was still so timid and quiet despite being around his good friends. The way he was always so kind whenever he did interact with others outside of his group. The way he had the most adorable concentration face. He was always a beautiful sight to lay your eyes on whenever you became frustrated with a problem and needed to look away from the paper.
Regardless, you couldn't sulk over the absence for too long, you had work to do. You began setting up at a table towards the back of the room facing the wall to ensure you wouldn't get distracted.
The doors of the study hall opened and the poets began filing in. You were fully immersed in your assignment and you didn't even notice. Meeks spotted you and eagerly notified the group of your presence, "She's here! I told you guys she'd be here!"
"Perfect!" Charlie exclaimed as he clapped his hands on Todd's shoulder. "Alright Todd, just head over there and talk to her."
Todd shrugged Charlie's hands off and annoyingly looked at the floor, "Guys I didn't agree to this."
He shifted his eyes to Neil suspecting that he was the cause of the group's sudden efforts to get Todd to speak to you. A few days ago he had asked Neil if he knew anything about you. Neil informed him that Meeks would probably be the one who knew you the best since you two had shared a math class together the semester prior. When he noticed Todd's disappointed look (disappointed because he hoped Neil would be able to give him information and he wouldn't have to ask anyone else) Neil began to interrogate Todd on sudden interest. After Neil's endless questions, Todd confessed he had a small crush on you. He begged Neil not to say anything to which Neil replied "No promises" and promptly ran out of their shared room.
Now here they were, Todd was completely aware that all of the guys now knew of his crush as they were attempting to encourage him to speak to you for days now. "Forget it guys I'm not doing this." Todd said shaking his head and beginning to make his way out the door.
"Don't you want to pass Calculus?" Neil quickly shot this question at Todd before he could leave. Todd stopped abruptly, looking very confused.
"Why would I not pass?" Todd shot back.
"You need a tutor," Neil said with a sly smile on his face.
"Meeks tutors me in Calc, he's been doing it since the start of the semester. You know that." Todd responded slowly, slightly squinting his eyes and both Meeks and Neil.
Meeks leaned over to Todd, quickly patting him on the back and with a large grin declared, "Not anymore!"
Todd's eyes went wide as he realized what was happening. "What?! Meeks you can't do that!"
"Sure I can," Meeks said taking a seat on a sofa nearby.
"Wait this isn't fair, you guys know I'm not good at math. Im no good with numbers what am I supposed to do now." Todd spoke frantically looking to the group with pleading eyes.
"It's simple Todd, you find another tutor," Neil said with an upbeat tone. He and the other poets began taking their seats in the sofa area with Meeks.
"How am I supposed to find someone as good at Calc as Meeks who will be willing to tutor me." Todd exasperatedly spoke both to the group and to himself.
The group exchanged looks as the waited for Todd to catch on. When he finally followed the line of sight of the poets he realized their eyes were fixed on you, sitting there at the back of the room. He looked at them with disbelief. "No, absolutely not" Todd shook his head.
Quickly Charlie stood up and exclaimed, "You know what I'm getting bored of this! Todd you either go talk to her right now or I'll get her to come to you."
"What are you talking about?" Todd looked at him with a raised eyebrow. Charlie began to lift his hands to his face, cupping his hands around his mouth. Todd realized that Charlie was about to shout your name for the whole study lounge to hear, and he knew Charlie wasn't bluffing. He quickly pulled Charlie's hands down and in a hushed voice begged him not to do it. Charlie smirked at him and gave a nod towards your direction. Todd's heart was racing at this point as he attempted to relax his breathing. He hesitantly nodded his head and began slowly walking to you. When he was about halfway there he nervously looked back at the group, weighing his options between committing to this or booking it out the door and dealing with the consequences later. But when he looked at the group he received a hushed but united "Carpe Diem!' from the poets. That motivated him to continue walking. His confidence was not long-lived as when he approached you he began feeling anxious again.
It was now or never. Todd lightly tapped your shoulder. You were so focused not only did you not hear any of the commotion of the boys coming into the room but the tap on your shoulder made you jump slightly as you turned around. When you looked up to see who was standing beside you, you realized it was Todd and your heart raced. "Oh, hi" you smiled at him.
"um.. hi. Sorry to disrupt you" Todd apologized shyly.
"oh no its completely fine don't worry" your smile grew at how adorable he was. There was a small beat as Todd eyes flicked from you to the boys then back to you.
“Do.. do you mind if I sit for a second?” Todd asked hoping that taking a seat would calm his nerves. You quickly nodded and cleared some desk space. Todd sat down slowly and tried to discreetly relax his breathing. He avoided eye contact, deciding that the wall looked more interesting. You, however, kept your eyes fixed on him. This was the first time you two were interacting but you were confused about the motive for his visit. As if he suddenly realized how strange this situation was looking in your eyes he discerned that he needed to try to break the silence. “Sorry, I’m..”
Todd held a shocked expression, “You know my name?”
You let out a quiet laugh and mentally kicked yourself for looking so weird, “yea, I see you in here a lot. I talk to some of your buddies every now and then and your name had been mentioned before.”
“And you remembered it?” He stared at you in awe.
“Yes Todd, I remembered.” You gave him a genuine smile.
Told looked away suddenly feeling heat rise to his cheeks. You debated whether you should say anything or just go back to work alongside Todd. Todd softly cleared his throat and turned to speak to you looking as if he were bracing himself. “So, my friend Meeks, he would tutor me in Calculus,” you nodded listening politely and he carefully constructed his words. “He is no longer able to continue tutoring me and he spoke highly of you and recommended I ask for your help.”
You slightly turned your head to glance at Meeks. Why couldn’t Meeks tutor anymore? He was good at math too. Nonetheless, this would be a good opportunity to get to know Todd.
Todd began to worry about your hesitation and started rapidly dismissing his prior request feeling foolish. He placed his hands on the edge of the desk to gain some leverage to push his seat back. He was about to stand as he began to ramble, “You know actually it’s alright, don’t worry about it. I should probably be paying attention in class more anyways so I’ll just do that and I can ask my professor for assistance-“
You reached your hand out and placed it on top of his causing him to freeze immediately. You caught his eyes and smiled “Todd, I’ll do it.”
Authors note: hi friends! I’d like to let it be known that I am not a writer! In fact, I am actually a math major! That being said, in a lot of the fanfics I read the authors are so amazing at dropping beautiful poetry and referencing fine literature, I will not be doing that. I am more knowledgeable about numbers so in my works math is more than likely to be referenced than English. I hope that’s okay and I’ll try to not overwhelm anyone with a lot of math talk.
