hiding the amber skies bible and leaving a riddle to it in your will would go crazy

When I die there's gonna be a treasure map on the back of my will

have you ever thought of writing elements of your series bibles/worldbuilding bibles and publishing them on their own? as in a guide or encyclopedia of Amber Skies amd Emerald Seas or the sort?

Avatar

No. I very deliberately will never share the contents of the lore bible for amber skies. A central element of the world is the reader not knowing many elements of the history and technology. The conflicting opinions, histories, and large gaps in knowledge, are the point.

I have, however, taken to doing worldbuilding through writing in-universe primary sources. For example, passages of a travel writing discussing the things they've seen, a food reviewer writing for a magazine, or in-universe product copy. Some of these I have shared.

I feel like it's really easy to discuss your fiction work online as like, a replacement for actually working on the fiction. You can post all day about who a character is, and how they might react to stuff. But you have to actually make the character good in the book first.

You've probably gotten a fair few asks about this already, but how are you enjoying Umineko so far? The first episode is slow, but it sets a lot of groundwork for the rest of the story.

It's interesting. It's a level and species of experimental that I think you could only achieve with manga. Like, I don't think this could ever be anything but a manga or a VN. Playing with the mystery genre in such a weird and deliberate way is evocative. Characters are vivid and well balanced without being gimmicky. It's trying something interesting and succeeding in a way that makes it hard to recommend.

Watching your Daemon stream, your comment about swords representing discernment brought to mind a lot of Hindu and Buddhist imagery, where the sword represents truth, the "cutting away of lies and the veil of ignorance."

Yuuuup thats probably where the Golden Dawn got the concept. Damn near every religious/occult group on the planet has some sort of significance to swords. They're an easy thing to assign symbology to.

Who gave this child a 5th Pentacle of Mars.

It's being correctly applied as well. 5th pentacle of Mars wards off demons.

Circle of Solomon without the Triangle of Solomon from the 1904 crowley-mathers Goetia.

7th Pentacle of the Sun from the Lesser Key

Maria's comment about the 7th pentacle of the sun applying to non-physical bonds isn't from the crowley-mathers translation. It implies she didn't just read the text, but read commentaries the solomonic tradition, and is familiar with broader occult exegesis. Neat!

Easy! That's the first pentacle of the moon! Notable in the lesser key for being visually unique. Instead of inscribed in a circle, it's an image of s gate inscribed in a square. The psalm on the inscription is psalm cvii-16, and it deals with the smashing of a brazen gate. It's for opening doors.

Third Pentacle of Mars. For exciting war and resisting enemies. The inscription is Psalm lxxvii. 13: "Who is so great a God as our Elohim?"

Only partially visible but I think that's the "Great Kabbalistic Circle" from Levi's Grand Grimoire. It's for binding powerful spirits. You can't just inscribe this one. You have to write it on the skin of a young goat. The cutoff text says "ROUTEduT" a shortening of the French for "route to the treasure."

A common thing for magic in the mid 19th century was binding a spirit to a circle, and only letting it go if it revealed the location of buried treasure.

"Sabarot de l'Avernière, a prolific author of projects in the early years of the Revolution, saw priests and doctors as the natural heirs of the Church's two most visible missions—the consolation of souls and the alleviation of pain. So the wealth of the Church, which has been diverted from its original use by the higher clergy, must be confiscated and returned to the nation, which alone knows its own spiritual and material needs. The revenues would be divided equally between the parish clergy and the doctors. Are not doctors the priests of the body? ‘The soul cannot be considered separately from animate bodies, and if the ministers of the Altars are venerated, and receive from the state a reasonable living, those who tend your health should also receive a salary sufficient to feed themselves and to succour you. They are the tutelary genii of the integrity of your faculties and sensations’. The doctor would no longer have to demand a fee from his patient; the treatment of the sick would be free and obligatory—a service that the nation would provide as one of its sacred tasks; the doctor would be no more than the instrument of that service. At the end of his studies, the new doctor would occupy not the post of his choice, but the one that was assigned to him according to the needs and vacancies, throughout the country; when he had gained in experience, he could apply for a more responsible, better-paid job. He would have to give an account to his superiors of his activities and would be held responsible for his mistakes. Having become a public, disinterested, supervised activity, medicine could improve indefinitely; in the alleviation of physical misery, it would be close to the old spiritual vocation of the Church, of which it would be a sort of lay carbon copy. To the army of priests watching over the salvation of souls would correspond that of the doctors who concern themselves with the health of bodies."

In 1837, the Frenchman Charles Poyen travelled to the good old USA, which had even less scrutiny in regards to medical practices compared to europe. Animal Magnetism was even more popular in the states. Many words have been written as to why, but I venture there are more material reasons for the popularity of Mesmerism. Medicine in 1837 sucked, and Americans love a con artist.

When homeopathy was invented in 1796, the vast majority of doctors in Europe were still following medieval doctrines of medicine. For all the innovations made by our dear friend Paracelsus, doctors often caused more harm than good. Homeopathy has no effect whatsoever, and was therefore often preferable to bloodletting and induced vomiting. Mesmerism benefited from a similar relationship. It was often more popular than institutional medicine, simply because it was not making the problem worse. That said, Mesmer wouldn’t give you cocaine.
