Do you guys ever think about how Vetinari believes that all people are inherently evil, but then he does things like:

Giving people others would deem irredeemable second chances (Lipwig, the other thief too, he even regretted the death of Lupine Wonse, the guy who summoned a dragon and tried to kill him); spends time with ppl who see only the good in everything (Carrot, Leonard); treats and values ppl like individuals and actually cares about them (that scene in Jingo where he tells Vimes that it’s good that people didn’t get killed in the war).

So I thought,

What if he doesn’t want to believe that everyone is evil. What if he had arrived to that conclusion just from his actual life experience with the assassins and guild leaders, because that’s all he had seen other people do. But he tries to spend time with good people and give criminals second chances because he wants to be proven wrong. To be proven that his philosophy is actually wrong and “there is some good in the world and it’s worth fighting for.”

I see Vetinari not as someone who believes in the inherent evil of humanity as much as a man acutely aware that humanity’s priority is *survival* - and that is the force he is working against. The selfish instinct that unchecked falls into self destructive competition instead of self interested cooperation.

If he can make sure as many people in his city have their basic needs met (food, shelter, safety, etc), that becomes the base on which the people with more altruistic motives can build something better.

Which is also what lets him give the likes of Moist a second chance: for those less instinctively giving, make altruism in their best interest.

There’s still a deep well of cynicism - but also an optimism that if he does his job right, Vetinari can make the world less evil.

Don’t forget: a young Havelock Vetinari wore a lilac and fought on the side of the revolution in Night Watch. He did so as an Assassin in the pay of those who wanted only change that put them in charge - but it’s telling that once he becomes the Patrician, the Seamstress’s Guild is legitimized (reasonably priced love) and throughout the novels we see him ultimately supporting Justice (the rise of the Watch) and Truth (a free press via the Ankh-Morpork Times). Unclear if he managed the hard boiled egg.

Endless optimism is a foolish way to look at the world, unable to see the strife and suffering. Endless pessimism will never make anyone happy, especially not you. You need to take the good and the bad, the dark and the light, the full and the empty. Hummina hummina hummina

Jeff is the head editor at Atlantica Magazine, but he hasn’t been writing much. The Tromp administration is hard to get a beat on, throwing out so much absurdity that it feels like nothing even matters anymore. He wants a story that will make a difference, and it’s not as if those just fall into your lap. But when Jeff’s phone suddenly buzzes with a new text message, that’s exactly what happens. Now Jeff is privy to a chat thread of top-secret information from Tromp’s under-qualified, highly-ignorant inner circle, and it’s looking like a real story. It’s also looking like a total hunk. Soon enough, Jeff and the physical manifestation of this egregiously handled group text containing highly sensitive government information are locked in the heat of gay, erotic passion, and he’s about to pound out a story that he never could’ve imagined. This erotic tale is 4,100 words of sizzling human on gay physically manifested leaked text action, including anal, blowjobs, rough sex, and living group chat love.

Listen if the study of ancient humans doesn’t make you at least a little bit emotional idk what to say.

I started crying today at the museum because they had reconstructed the shoes of Otzi the iceman.

Either he or someone he knew who cared about him made these shoes out of grass and bear skin and twine and he was wearing them when he died over five thousand years ago.

And a Czech researcher and his students did reconstructions of these shoes and wore them to the same place where he died to test them out and they were like yep! These shoes are really cozy and comfy and didn’t give us blisters while hiking!

Is that not just the coolest shit ever????
