Omg okay!!! It doesn’t look like much yet but it’s already been weeks of work.
The plywood with all the holes is a mould I made which I am as of today ready to remove (!!!!!!) altho I won’t get around to removing it until next week. The actual violin part is the 1.2mm around the outside and the 6 blocks in the corners and top and bottom. Assuming zero knowledge of my dear reader, the outside is called the ribs and it forms the sides of the violin. I started out with a log of wood, and I cut it into strips, and I brought the strips down to thickness and made em all smooth, and then I bent them into shape with a bending iron. The blocks were also a log which I painstakingly sculpted into the right shapes.
“It can bleed it can die” was my glue job on the bottom right corner between the corner block and the rib. The ribs are only glued to the blocks, never to the mould, and I wasn’t paying attention when I did it so it resulted in a big ass gap between the mould and the rib along the curve, and it was crooked too. If I’d kept it like that, the contour of the whole instrument would’ve had a fucked up shape. So I had to unglue it without breaking anything and it was so stressful lmao.
I should post about my progress! It never occurred to me cuz to me Tumblr is a meme website and not a ““blogging”” platform but yea I think I will post occasionally! It will be months between updates I think, because this first violin (and the second one which I have just started working on) will take two years to finish on my school’s schedule, since we don’t work on it during the summers and I still have to learn every single step. This term I finish the ribs of two violins. Next fall I start the top, bottom, neck and scroll for both. Next winter I finish them and put them all together. Then finally the fall after that I learn varnishing. And then they will be finisheddddd lol and then I will make two more as fast as possible!
