My fics are not intended for all audiences. Please donโ€™t stunt your brainโ€™s development by reading adult material prematurely.

All works are smutty in nature unless marked with an asterisk!

There needs to be a discussion about Damianoโ€™s/Mรฅneskinโ€™s silence on the Palestinian genocide compared to their advocacy for white Europeans like Ukrainians, Poles, etc.

(With the exception of Ethan who protests regularly๐Ÿ’•)

But frankly, I donโ€™t feel educated enough to write eloquently about it so please give me your takes.

โ€œIf autism isnโ€™t caused by environmental factors and is natural why didnโ€™t we ever see it in the past?โ€

We did, except it wasnโ€™t called autism it was called โ€œLittle Jonathan is a r*tarded halfwit who bangs his head on things and canโ€™t speak so weโ€™re taking him into the middle of the cold dark forest and leaving him there to die.โ€

Or โ€œlittle Jonathan doesnโ€™t talk but does a good job herding the sheep, contributes to the community in his own way, and is, all around, a decent guy.โ€ That happened a lot, too, especially before the 19th century.

Or, backing up FURTHER

and lots of people think this very likely,

โ€œOh little Sionnat has obviously been taken by the fairies and theyโ€™ve left us a Changeling Child who knows too much, and asks strange questions, and uses words she shouldnโ€™t know, and watches everything with her big dark eyes, clearly a Fairy Child and not a Human Like Us.โ€

The Myth of the Changeling child, a human baby apparently replaced at a young age by a toddler who โ€œsuddenlyโ€ acts โ€œstrange and feyโ€ is an almost textbook depiction of autistic children.

To this day, โ€œautism warrior mommiesโ€ talk about autism โ€œstealingโ€ their โ€œsweet normal childโ€ and have this idea of โ€œgetting their real baby backโ€ which (in the face of modern science)ย  indicates how the human psyche actually does deal with finding out their kid acts unlike what they expected.

Given this evidence, and how common we now know autism actually is, the Changeling myth is almost definitely the result of peopleโ€™s confusion at the development of autistic children.

Weirdly enough, that legend is now comforting to me.

I think itโ€™s worth noting that many like me, who are diagnosed with ASD now, would probably have been seen as just a bit odd in centuries past. Iโ€™m only a little bit autistic; I can pass for neurotypical for short periods if I work really hard at it. I have a lack of talent in social situations, and Iโ€™m prone to sensory overload or you might notice me stimming.

But hereโ€™s the thing: life is louder, brighter and more intense and confusing than it has ever been. I live on the edge of London and I rarely go into the centre of town because itโ€™s too overwhelming. If I went back in time and lived on a farm somewhere, would anyone even notice there was anything odd about me? No police sirens, no crowded streets that go on for miles and miles, no flickery electric lights. Working on a farm has a clear routine. Iโ€™d be a badass at spinning cloth or churning butter because I find endless repetition soothing rather than boring.

Iโ€™m not trying to romanticise the past because I know it was hard, dirty work with a constant risk of premature death. I donโ€™t actually want to be a 16th century farmer! What Iโ€™m saying is that disability exists in the context of the environment. Our environment isnโ€™t making people autistic in the sense of some chemical causing brain damage. But we have created a modern environment which is hostile to autistic people in many ways, which effectively makes us more disabled. When you make people more disabled, you start to see more people struggling, failing at school because theyโ€™re overwhelmed, freaking out at the sound of electric hand dryers and so on. And suddenly it looks like thereโ€™s millions more autistic people than existed before.

โ€œโ€ฆdisability exists in the context of the environment.โ€

Reblog for disability commentary.

That last paragraph is absolutely important.

โ€œHow come nobody ever heard of โ€˜dyslexiaโ€™ until widespread literacy became a thing?โ€

That dyslexia comment is genius

Interestingly, Dyslexia is less common in non-english speaking countries. And almost unheard of in countries that use some sort of pictograms for lettering (e.g. Chinese and Japanese).

A reminder that I was in Minneapolis last summer and found a Dutch painting from the 1600s containing a boy with Down syndrome.

Disabled people have always been here and have always been part of our communities. Itโ€™s just we have words to describe who we are now.

removing distractions isn't enough anymore, I need to be sent to the seaside like a sickly victorian woman in order to get some writing done

Okay okay this is your reminder that all hope is not lost!

The power trio were all smiles at lunch. Tom + Vic have been hanging out lots. Dami sent them songs while writing Funny Little Fears (to mixed reviews lmao). Tom was at the album release party. Ethan said Mร… have been reorganizing, not disbanding. He and Tom were both at Vicโ€™s pop-up. They interact with each otherโ€™s solo project posts. Everyone reports no bad blood, that they remain good friends.

STEP BACK FROM THE EDGE

Thank you guys for relating to my last post.

On a separate note, Iโ€™m sorry you guys relate to my last post.
