cory doctorow says a lot of true and important shit but would it kill him to use a voice that's about 30% less insufferable
enjoying my glorp #glorpmode
unfortunate that so much food that is good as hell looks like the kind of thing you'd feed the orphans working at the racism factory.
Sweet corn, mushrooms, onion, probably some sort of grain - rice I think and some herbs
so given the texture - a mushroom and sweet corn risotto?
Probably very tasty
Close! the thing that's probably throwing you off is that it's wholegrain rolled oats (and a can of lentils), not rice. Spiced with cumin, coriander, fennel, chili powder, garlic, and also some sliced jalapenos.
What is the current meta re: best possible Tumblr substitute? Is it still Dreamwidth? Cohost imploded and I'm sure as fuck not going to Twitthreadstodonsky.
I'm happy to pay for it, even.
I know what you mean, but the thing is, it doesn't need to a perfect substitute by any means. I'm approaching middle age now: I have watched many of my beloved internet communities come and go, I understand there's no point in clinging to them forever because they all ultimately will be lost like tears in rain, etc. I accept that, I don't need Tumblr 2. But an acceptable Tumblr replacement needs:
- to not be a microblogging service (even one which technically allows longposts), because those cause immediate and terminal brainrot
- to not be a regular blogging/publishing service, because it has to facilitate direct back-and-forth interaction reasonably well. I could just have a self-hosted blog (and probably will, one of these days), but I'm here because I like conversations with people, and not just in comment sections
That's really all I ask, and it doesn't feel like two requirements is too tall an order, idk.
It does seem like a niche that’s terribly underserved on the modern internet. You’d think at least one or two companies could figure out a way to make that sustainable.
We build a bluesky client which handles seamless threading/dethreading (for macroblogging) and markdown?
Item: incomprehensible hovering dark pillar that burns away sickness with beams of light
This is totally a thing that exists and it's crazy to me that it's not already standard in indoor spaces
@binary-bluejay (now deactivated on Tumblr but still regularly posts on Twitter) was looking into this for a while and went to at least one conference about it. The short answer is, it's because it's very new and the health ramifications aren't completely known yet.
The main thing is that far-UVC inevitably produces ozone. I know the link you provided said that ozone wasn't a concern and that's kinda true, but there are a bunch of asterisks and daggers on that statement which probably got elided in typical "university press release" fashion. The ozone levels produced by far-UVC are small, and way below the levels typically associated with health risks, but they are nonzero and there's some uncertainty as to where the cost-benefit ratio comes out on net, since we're not even sure exactly how much disease transmission comes from aerosolized viruses in indoor spaces.
Presumably an HVAC system with a combination of far-UVC irradiation and some kind of aggressive neutralization of ozone would solve both problems at once, but that's a much bigger infrastructure upgrade than just putting a UVC lamp in rooms.
If you're doing it inside an HVAC box you can just use UVC that is too long a wavelength to generate O3 but short enough to mess with biological stuff. But this includes human skin/eyes so it can't just be a lamp shining where there are people around. (it can be a lamp that's only lit when the room is empty though)
i really like berlin as a city, but in terms of getting out into nature it's like a 3/10 at best. germany has a lot of really beautiful spots--the black forest! the alps! the erzgebirge!--but berlin is in the middle of a vast flat expanse of swamps, coal mines, and cabbage fields. wonder if we could convince the whole population to pick up stakes and move to the adriatic coast or something. like when ulaanbaatar was still örgöö, migrating from place to place.
i’m dating an astrophysicist
Evening ms. genderer. just returned from a weekend in berlin. had my first and second diesel, thanks to you. hope you do end up going to berghain, if you like berlin clubs it is so so worth it.
:D hopefully i get in :/ im hoping. my shorts and my collar will work
@tiredchinchilla said: post shorts and collar
This reply made me realize the shorts I already have arnt cool enough so I thrifted some shorts. You can't really see it but they have like a subtle lace texture it's cute
With and without jacket (I figure jacket is wise cuz it's chilly at midnight)
New career plan:
Buy shit from eu, attach made in uk sticker, sell to usa
No one is doing it like John Tromp
how did premodern people cope with tummy aches and head aches. like. its so therapeutic to know what is happening to your body. imagine your body is just...this mysterious unknowable magical entity. terrible
wait do you know what headaches are? I dont rly
I guess headaches in general are mysterious but supposedly dehydration headaches are a result of your brain shrinking slightly and like. The connection to the inside of your skull tugging a little. That might be bullshit.
well maybe they also had some explanation that might be bullshit and that helped them cope
now im no policy expert. but it seems to me if you wanted to announce massive new tariffs, you would do them like, 6 months ahead of time, so domestic businesses can prepare to cover the shock. instead of 3 days before they go into effect
yeah if the point is that American manufacturers will hire more people and invest in production... like when are they supposed to make that decision. They could have started in early February if the tariffs were announced in advance (it's not like they're based on new information). And now... I mean are they even going to last? Idk what I'd do as a manager
Where are these new hires even supposed to come from? It'll be the midterms before the people who decide to become factory technicians instead of IT people are finished with trade school.
