Well hello, Tumblr People! I just finished a Thing that I made for @chriscalledmesweetie as a Fandom Trumps Hate 2025 gift. It's a limerick remix of her fabulous "Mrs Hudson's Fluff Brew". It is illustrated with doodles, the like of which you might find on a middle-schooler's history notebook. I'm chunking it up so it won't take a month to post. Here's the beginning of Chapter 1! I hope you like it.

30th January

Martha, a Seer, knows fate Is not just one line going straight. She oft tries to damper The strong urge to tamper, To fix things just in the wrong state.

Our tale begins with a meeting. Sherlock and John give a nice greeting. Martha can tell They match very well. Her urge to assist them is fleeting.

That night, though, a Special Dream tells Of a future with all of the hells. An act of devotion Will put into motion A nightmare. She must use her spells!

Thank you so much, @ghostofnuggetspast! This is a masterpiece!

Everyone, drop what you are doing (unless it's, you know, holding a baby, or a grenade, or something) and go read this!

A lot of you forget that, while Sherlock may or may not have a mind palace room/wing for John, we know he has a huge & thick file

Not only that, but he went through the trouble of finding/printing a colour picture of John & glued it onto the vivtruvian man or whatever he is

Hello you two beautiful! Are there any fic where John finds this file among Sherlock stuff? I did search, but didn’t find a thing.

My name is Liriel

Today I feel like a wide-eyed novice,

Awestruck and wandering in the library …

Sometimes I am a student

Sometimes I am a librarian

Always I am hungry …

I ask the world, “Where can I learn everything? And how long will it take?”

And the answer comes,

“Be a wide-eyed novice,

Awestruck and wandering in the library.”

John Watson in Canon: Chronic Pain and Disability

Whenever I write John Watson in fanfiction, my portrayal has a tendency to be steeped in chronic pain and disability. For me, this approach is both therapeutic and deeply meaningful. Writing Watson as a disabled character allows me to explore the complexities of resilience, vulnerability, and strength in ways that feel personal and honest. But more than that, it’s important to me to give voice to characters who live with disabilities—characters who reflect the realities of so many people’s lives but are so rarely seen in leading roles.

John Watson offers a natural foundation for this kind of portrayal. His experiences of injury, illness, and the psychological scars of war are written into his character from the very beginning. Watson’s story is one of quiet perseverance and grace, a reminder that strength is not the absence of hardship but the ability to live with it.

The Scars of War

When we first meet Watson in A Study in Scarlet, he is already a man marked by hardship. As a military doctor, Watson served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, where his life was irrevocably changed. He describes how a Jezail bullet shattered his shoulder, a wound that nearly cost him his life:

"I should have fallen into the hands of the murderous Ghazis had it not been for the devotion and courage shown by Murray, my orderly."

This injury was only the beginning of his suffering. After being invalided home, Watson fell victim to enteric fever, which left him weak and emaciated. His own words paint a vivid picture of a man who has endured great physical strain:

"I was so weak from prolonged hardship and illness that a medical board determined that not a day should be lost in sending me back to England."

Watson’s physical scars are only part of his story. As a war veteran, he also carries the psychological weight of his experiences. Though Doyle does not explicitly name Watson’s struggles (an approach typical of the period), his introspective nature and calm demeanor hint at a man who has learned to live with trauma.

Watson’s injuries also serve as a poignant reflection of Victorian society’s attitudes toward disability. Wounded veterans like Watson were often romanticized as symbols of sacrifice, yet their daily struggles were largely invisible. Doyle allows Watson to transcend this stereotype, portraying him not as a tragic figure but as a deeply human one, navigating his vulnerabilities with quiet strength.

Granada’s Watson: A Portrait of Strength in Vulnerability

The 1984 Granada TV series, celebrated for its faithfulness to the canon, brings Watson’s struggles to life with remarkable nuance. Played first by David Burke and later by Edward Hardwicke, Watson is portrayed as a man whose injuries and frailty are present but never overpowering.

In The Sign of Four, Watson’s exhaustion is palpable as he keeps pace with Holmes during an arduous investigation. There is a moment where Watson pauses to catch his breath, his fatigue etched into his expression, but he does so without complaint. Similarly, in The Blue Carbuncle, Watson is seen trudging alongside Holmes in the cold streets of London, his movements slow and deliberate, suggesting the lingering effects of his injuries.

The series also captures Watson’s inner strength, born from years of navigating trauma and recovery. In The Crooked Man, Watson’s calm steadiness during tense moments is a stark contrast to Holmes’ sharp energy. While Holmes races ahead, Watson observes, assesses, and brings a sense of balance to their dynamic. It’s a partnership that thrives not despite Watson’s vulnerabilities but because of the strength he’s developed through them.

What makes these portrayals so powerful is their subtlety. Burke and Hardwicke imbue Watson with a quiet dignity—his moments of pain or tiredness are never exaggerated but are always present, a constant reminder of his humanity. Yet this same man walks into danger time and time again without hesitation, driven by loyalty to Holmes and a deep sense of justice.

The Complex Dynamics of Friendship

Watson’s chronic pain and disability also influence his dynamic with Holmes, offering a compelling contrast to Holmes’ near-superhuman energy and intellect. While Holmes often appears aloof or brusque, moments in the canon suggest that he is acutely aware of Watson’s endurance.

Watson’s empathy, born from his own struggles, serves as a counterbalance to Holmes’ analytical brilliance. In The Crooked Man, Watson’s calm steadiness contrasts with Holmes’ sharp energy, creating a partnership that thrives not despite Watson’s vulnerabilities but because of the strengths he has developed through them.

Why Watson’s Story Resonates

What makes Watson extraordinary is not that he overcomes his injuries or illness but that he lives with them so gracefully. His physical wounds and emotional scars are part of him, yet they never define him. Instead, they deepen his courage, his kindness, and his steadfast loyalty.

Unlike Holmes, whose intellect often feels otherworldly, Watson is profoundly human. He is the friend who stays by your side, even when he is tired. He is the doctor who quietly saves lives, even as he carries his own pain. He is the veteran who has faced death and chooses to embrace life anyway.

Watson’s story is a reminder that heroism comes in many forms. It can be found in the man who limps down the street beside his brilliant companion, the doctor who offers a comforting word to a stranger, or the friend who believes in you when no one else does.

For me, writing Watson this way in fanfiction feels like a celebration of everything he represents. His story, at its heart, is about perseverance—not as a grand, heroic act but as a daily choice to keep going, to keep helping, and to keep believing. For those of us who have faced our own struggles, Watson is not just a character; he is an inspiration.
