mormons undoubtedly in the top 5 worst things the united states has ever invented which is really saying something
sorry that sometimes when I stay up too late I start posting abt how much I hate mormonism but the spirit just moves me to do it
like the mormon church is just such a perfect microcosm of everything wrong with christianity as it's practiced among the american right wing. everything abt it is so disgusting. one of the most utterly repulsive spectacles of racism, misogyny, and bigotry to ever leave a stain on the earth
Bringing this back because there’s been a bit of a push from Mormon influencers to normalize Mormonism, and as an exmormon I’m here to say fuck that
Do not allow the LDS Church to rebrand itself as some kind of harmless quirky church that just has a few silly rules. It’s a fucking cult that brainwashes its members and actively harms marginalized people. Mormonism deserves every ounce of hate it receives and then some

Here's a poem I wrote while trying to get back to sleep this morning.
I do not want a wireless mouse I do not want it for my house It would not make me feel more free It surely would get lost on me "I've never lost it," you might say; I would lose it anyway.
If you give a wireless mouse a battery It will ask for a battery And after you give a wireless mouse a battery It will ask for a battery And after you give a wireless mouse a battery It will ask for a battery And

Everyone waiting for members of the SF/F community to weigh in about Neil Gaiman, please remember that a lot of people in light of recent revelations are having to recontextualize relationships and events going back decades.
Not just fans. Peers, friends, and family need space and time to process.
You may know someone your entire adult life, who has treated you with kindness, patience, affection, and support who is also capable of doing others harm. Cognitive dissonance is human. Grieving relationships that may have only existed as equal in your own mind is still grieving.
I genuinely hope that everyone who has been harmed finds healing, comfort, and peace, and that reparations are made and lives can go on without further suffering.
Believe the abused when they come forward. Hold abusers accountable for their actions regardless of intent.
Mourn, and go on.
But most of all take whatever steps you can to prevent further harm, and send a clear message to your community that deliberately doing others harm will not be tolerated, and those who choose to prey on others shall be held accountable.
What happened to Neil?
A podcast was published by Tortoise Media interviewing two of his intimate partners both of whom were in their early 20s when they began the relationships who came forward about painful assaults they had not consented to during the course of their consensual relationships.
Rather than listening to the podcast, I would recommend reading the transcript.
All of which has prompted various people who worked in bookstores where Gaiman regularly did readings over the years to reveal that there was a whisper network warning young female employees at stores to not be alone with him.
It's not the silence from individual writers I judge. It is the silence from SFF news outlets. Where is the File 770 article? Bleeding Cool? Camestros Felapton? I'll forgive Jason Sanford-- he's got COVID; he's excused from public speaking-- but he's the only one. (And Ursula Vernon went the other way and attacked the outlet that did the reporting, and Diane Duane defended her doing so, and then both posts were deleted.)
What about EVERYONE who was very willing to speak about the Alice Munro stuff but has not said a word about Gaiman?
THEY'RE NOT GOING TO WEIGH IN. They're going to use that excuse of "we need to process" until it's far enough in the rearview mirror that they can comfortably make excuses for why it wasn't that bad and everyone will go on with their lives, only now with proof for the whisper networks that coming forward with an allegation about Gaiman will get you nothing.
It is an excuse. SFF will quietly cover it up because the movers and shakers only care about this stuff when it's not someone they like doing it.
Also tired of hearing "well it's only some tory/terf tabloid podcast I'll believe it when a REAL news source reports" waffle from people who clearly only heard of Tortoise Media after this story broke. Tortoise are far from perfect and there's a lot wrong with how they presented this story, but they are a legitimate media outlet with a track record of covering sexual abuse stories.
For example:
Investigated mishandling of rape and sexual assault allegations at Cambridge University. The resulting enquiry recommending sacking the college head, but he was allowed to resign.
I can't stick Rachel Johnson either, but Paul Caruana Galizia has as solid a rep as any journalist. There's no reason to doubt the investigations in the podcast, despite the glaring flaws in the presentation. Whatever else you might think about Tortoise, the right wing conspiracy angle is absurd. Gaiman is just the latest in a number of reports they've carried out into powerful men and sexual abuse.
There's no reason not to believe K and Scarlet.
The podcast is available on Apple podcasts and Spotify as well as the Tortoise website (paid or free and ad supported). If you don't want to give Tortoise money even indirectly, Kathryn Tewson on bsky as independently transcribed three of the four episodes so far here.
But let's not kid ourselves. However good or bad Tortoise might be, the ~ NoT a LEgitiMaTe neWs oUtLeT ~ angle Is just. Another. Excuse. to ignore the problem. As, it seems increasingly likely, the industry as been doing with Gaiman for years.
For the record, I believe the women who have come forward. While I found the podcast itself to be problematic in the victim blaming language and some of the anti-BDSM statements to be ridiculous and closed-minded, I still believe that these women experienced intimate partner violence without their consent, with no aftercare, in relationships with massive power imbalances.
I know there are a lot of people here on Tumblr who keep saying 'stop calling him Neil you don't know him he's not your friend'; for the last 32 years I believed that I did know him and that we were friends. Which is why I made the statements that I did and I stand by them.
Finding out someone you care about who has been nothing but kind and generous with you is also capable of intimate partner violence and targeting fragile, vulnerable women is difficult for anyone, but particularly other women who have the additional cognitive dissonance to deal with of 'why was I safe when they were not?'
However conservative the media source, however much I disagree with one of the journalist's TERF rhetoric, that doesn't change the facts that at best we are talking about predatory behaviour and at worst patterns of intimate partner abuse that go back years of not decades.
This isn't about kink-shaming, polyamory, or age differences. This is about someone choosing intimate partners based on unequaled power dynamics and engaging in unsafe sex acts they had not previously agreed to with any kind of safeword or aftercare.
As other people have said, 'abusive' is not the same as 'irredeemable'. People can grow and change and become better than they were. I genuinely hope that is possible, in this case. But my sympathy and empathy is with the women who have come forward, and the friends and family of both the accused and the accusers.
It takes an immense amount of courage to come forward and speak out against someone as influential and well-known as a best selling author revered by his very large fan base. I genuinely hope they are not being subjected to harassment because of it.
Assertions made without evidence can and will be dismissed without evidence. If it was required to believe all abuse allegations without evidence and we practiced gulity until proven innocent I'd be in prison for a crime I didn't commit. If you want me to take an accusation seriously, provide evidence.
Only 2-8% of sexual assault allegations are deemed by law enforcement to be false. The validity of the WhatsApp recordings and text messages and emails provided as evidence during the podcast has not been questioned, and when it comes down to it yes, I take the abused at their word with regards to consent. Or is consent not sexy when it's inconvenient for you?
I saw someone say that if they’d just found out one of their partners didn’t consent to the sex they’d had their reaction would be apologetic and horrified, not texting her that he felt suicidal because she would “Me Too” him. And certainly not the ~well she has false memories and is unreliable~ comment Gaiman provided the podcast. Playing right from the abusers playbook when it suits him.
blocking isnt enough sometimes. i wanna use lazer therapy
