Practice Date (BOTW Zelink, modern AU)

E | Words: 5k | Read here on Ao3 | Complete!

"I'd like your input on something," Zelda says. The bowl spins in her hands. "So, there's this guy."

It feels like ice water is dripping down Link's spine.

"I see him pretty regularly - I'd say we're friends, even."

The water increases to a trickle.

"I really like him."

It's like cold water dumped down Link's spine. He knew they couldn't be together - there's no way Zelda likes him like that - but he had always hoped. Sometimes, late at night, he had almost convinced himself to say something to Zelda, see if she felt the same way.

But then morning would come, and he'd realize what a bad idea that was.

Zelda continues, her words rushing over each other now, "I want to ask him out but I don't know what he'll say."

Two Different Worlds (TP Zelink)

E | Words: 55k | Read here on Ao3 | Complete!

She doesn't think either of them need to see anything, especially not the scar on her abdomen from when Link fought her Ganondorf-possessed body. There's a reason all her dresses are heavy and thick. "There's plenty of light from the fire in the sitting room." There isn't, and she knows that he knows that.

He doesn't say anything, but she can hear his skepticism in the silence. Finally he asks, "Do you not want us to see each other?" His voice sounds thick, although with what emotion she's not sure.

Zelda wouldn't mind seeing Link - might even enjoy it. But being seen? She doesn't think she can handle that.

---

He likes Zelda. He's admired her strength and hard work since they met, but now he really likes her. Normally this wouldn't be a problem. If they were in a loving marriage, awesome - he adores his wife. If they weren't in a relationship, he'd ignore it, maybe go bale some hay or run laps to keep himself distracted. But they are in a relationship - a contract relationship. The contract doesn't mention how to handle catching feelings for Zelda.

Link Goes Undercover (BOTW Zelink)

E | Words: 13k | Read here on Ao3 | Complete!

“Let’s disguise Sir Link then,” the king said, the way another person might say, “It’s sunny today.”

Impa squinted at Link, and for a moment he knew exactly what a bug under a magnifying glass felt like. “Two weeks of training, and we’ll have a Sheikah guard Link’s own mother wouldn’t recognize.”

All the Trashy Novels

All the Trashy Novels by @airplanned is one of my favourite pre calamity cannon divergent fanfictions. It is hilarious and heart warming and I have returned to it so many times. Zelda and Link are such awkward horny little teens and I love them so so much.

I typeset and had actually finished the text block for this one (along with others) last November, which is why the information page says 2024, but we move, she is done now.

I was stuck for such a long time on the cover but I had seen other binders working with matte soft touch laminate/fanart for covers and had wanted to give that kind of cover a go for a while.

When I found the amazing art on the cover of this fic by @eerna and the gorgeous kiss on the back cover by @aquaticpal I was desperate to create a cover from them and could think of nothing else until I had achieved my goal. Thank you both so so much for giving me permission to use your art for this one-off personal edition to my collection. I am so happy with it and will absolutely treasure it forever.

There are a couple of things I would edit about the cover in terms of where I placed things, and the colours came out quite a bit darker than I expected, but overall I am thrilled with how it came out and can't wait to create more covers in this style.

The casing isn't quite abysmal which I am taking as a win. I do need to work on my margins however.

Many, many, thanks to @airplanned for giving me permission to bind this fic and to edit my copy to be an edition that uses UK spelling!

More pictures and a video below the cut.

Ahhhhhh! That’s so cool! This made my day and I love the Zelda font. Thank you so much for sharing!

4 What fandoms do you write for?  Legend of Zelda, a variety of games

5 Do you respond to comments? YES. Posting fic is an invitation to play. So if you come in, I’m joining you.

6 Fic with the angsty ending? Tempest this tells the story of Urbosa right up to when she fell in Naboris

7 Fic with the happiest ending? The Dragon at Lanayru which ends with a proposal

8 Do you get hate? Lol yes, it has gotten served to my tumblr in box and it’s why I dumped Fanfiction dot net

9 Do you write smut? YES. I enjoy writing it even though I find it very taxing. I currently have two smut pieces that are in the whole editing stage which is remarkable for me and I really can’t wait until they are ready to be read. At least one ought to get me some anon Tumblr hate lol.

10 Have you ever co-written a fic? I have not.

11 All time favorite ship? All time hmmmm. It’s currently ZeLink Fever here but man I adored Mulder/Scully

12 WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I don’t want to say doubt but my existential crisis “ but who was Mipha to me” thing. Like it has a good start but it’s been sitting on a burner forever. Oh and the food truck thing. Every time I see food trucks I think about that one.

13 Writing strengths? Action sequences. I do good combat and I think my smut is solid- I write them similarly.

14 Writing weaknesses? I am not super sure. My grammar skills are relatively weak, I think. I don’t really think about writing formally so I get lost when people start talking about the meta of making stories sometimes.

No pressure tags toooo…. @unmaskedcardinal @st0rmyskies and @portraitofalinkonfyre since that was a fun bunch of reading last time

Thanks for the tag, @sparklyhyperbole! These games are so fun

  1. How many works on AO3? 7, although one is the alternate-pov-scenes from another fic
  2. Total AO3 word count? 89,757
  3. Top 5 fics by kudos? Two Different Worlds, Boyfriend's Tunic, Practice Date, Link Goes Undercover, Home
  4. What fandoms do you write for?  LOZ, mostly TP and BOTW
  5. Do you respond to comments? Yes! I try to respond to every single one
  6. Fic with the angsty ending? Not really any of them -- maybe the alternate-pov-scene one, because that doesn't really have any kind of structure and is just left hanging? I like happy endings
  7. Fic with the happiest ending? They all have happy endings (I know what I like lol). If I had to pick one, maybe TDW just because there's a longer buildup so it feels like a happier ending
  8. Do you get hate? Kind of? I got a couple comments that said something like "this really wouldn't happen irl." Commenter, my fic is free and so is the back button
  9. Do you write smut? 6 out of my 7 fics are explicit -- yup, I write smut and love it. One day I'll write stuff that isn't smutty, but that day hasn't happened yet.
  10. Have you ever co-written a fic? Not yet, but I'd love to someday!
  11. All time favorite ship? Zelink, no question. I appreciate that other ships exist but Zelink is definitely my OTP.
  12. WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Thousand Year Sleep - BOTW Link's in the Shrine of Resurrection for a thousand years instead of 100, so literally everyone he knows is gone, the land looks different, and really all he has is the Slate and Zelda's voice. The sheer amount of NPC creation required for this doesn't fit my writing preferences, at least currently.
  13. Writing strengths? Dialogue and emotions -- they're just so fun to write!
  14. Writing weaknesses? Structure, structure, structure. If I run into a wall with a fic and can't figure out how to fix it, it's almost always a structure problem. I've tried looking up story structures and I've wound up more confused rather than less, so I haven't figured out how to solve this one yet.

no pressure tagging @drsteggy @demiboydemon @3-frogs-in-a-suit and anyone else who wants to play!

Nintendo for years: our niche in the video game and console market has been lower power systems marketed at kids! These systems are usually less expensive than our competitors as a result.
Nintendo now: the switch 2 is the same cost as a PS5

the fact that the switch 2 tech demo tutorial 'game' costs money and is digital only is insane. remember when every wii came with wii sports for free? do you remember that? i am going to hunt down the nintendo execs for sport

trying to get better at shippy pictures because i am one selfish mf and also wanted an excuse to do the rainbow thing i see sometimes

i really like it (for once!) and i’m unsure about colouring it because i have four other projects on the go so…NOT SURE IF SHOULD COMMIT hhhhhnnnngggg

being a self-taught artist with no formal training is having done art seriously since you were a young teenager and only finding out that you’re supposed to do warm up sketches every time you’re about to work on serious art when you’re fuckin twenty-five

someone: oh yeah, do this exercise during your warm ups! it’ll help

me: my what

What’s up I have an actual college degree in art and I was never ONCE taught to do warm ups.

when i was in undergrad, it was kind of mentioned in and offhand way that we should do warmups, but we were never shown what that meant. And, y’know, we were young so it didn’t matter so much.

Being older now and having an art job it’s…kind of essential.

So: a quick primer for those of you who are like ‘ok but how do i actually go about doing this warmup thing.’

1) you may be tempted to do ‘a warmup drawing’ which is just a drawing that will take longer than it needed to and probably be frustrating and kind of bad because you didn’t warm up first. It’s tempting but always a trick your brain is playing on you! Do not trust!

2) warmups will vary based on what feels good to you/what task you’re about to do/what motor skills you want to practice. That being said, some good standbys:

a) circles. Just a whole page of circles on whatever drawing surface you’re going to be using, whether that’s your tablet or your sketchbook or a drawing pad on an easel. For these circles you should make sure that you’re drawing from your shoulder and not your wrist. In fact, you want to be drawing from your shoulder rather than your wrist most of the time! forever! your wrist is delicate please preserve it!

In order to ensure that you’re drawing from your shoulder, when you’re holding your pencil or whatever drawing tool you’re using, the only part of your hand that should be touching the drawing surface is part of the last two fingers–some people prefer the finger tips, but I tend to favor the first knuckles. Either way, the fingers should really be ghosting over the surface, providing guidance rather than support.

I usually start with big circles and then go to smaller circles and lines of ellipses, and then try to fit circles and ellipses inside other shapes i’ve already drawn as a precision exercise, but i don’t do that unless i’m feeling loose

b) spirals! i don’t always do spirals, but if i’m stiff and the circles just aren’t cutting it, spirals are a good fall back. I start from the center and work outward, going both clockwise and counterclockwise until i feel comfortable with the whole range of motion. Some people really care about getting perfect spirals but for me it’s all about making sure i’m comfortable with how i’m moving so who really even cares about how the spirals look. Not me!

c) lines! straight lines! in parallel! i do a mix of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. These are often more from the elbow than the shoulder, especially if I’m working on a smaller surface. For this exercise, I recommend holding the drawing tool perpendicular with the surface

d) connect the dots. This is a precision and accuracy exercise and takes two forms. The first is to draw two dots and then draw a straight line between them. The second is to draw three dots and draw the curve that connects them. This sounds a lot simpler than it is in practice. Take time to ghost over the line you plan to draw before actually committing to your line. (I don’t always remember where I picked up my warm up exercises, but I’m pretty sure I got this one from Scott Robertson. His how to draw and how to render books are very technical but also accessible and worth checking out)

e) cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders. These help get your brain into a more volumetric space. I draw multiples of each, rotating the forms around, and I’ll often take the time to do some rough shading on at least a few of them

f) spidermans! This one is really good if you’re going to be storyboarding or working on dynamic poses. Just fill a page full of spidermans doing all sorts of acrobatics.

g) beans. I don’t do beans too much anymore, but I know a lot of people like it so I’m mentioning it here. Fill an area with different size bean shapes without lifting your pencil off the paper.

h) short medium and long line repetition. draw a short, medium, and long line on your page, and then draw directly on top of them 8 to 12 times, doing your best to exactly trace what you’ve already drawing. Repeat with a wavy line. I’m bad at this one, which means I probably need to do it more.

And there are lots more options too! Hit up youtube to see what other people recommend, put together your own go-to list, mix it up when you’re getting bored, etc.

This is a long list, I know, but I usually don’t take more than 10 to 15 minutes to warm up, and I can warm up one handed while I’m drinking coffee, so, multitasking hurrah.

Sometimes I’ll advance to a precision warmup and find that I haven’t loosened up enough yet; it’s totally ok to go back to an earlier exercise! Also, all of this has the added benefit of kind of ritualistically getting you into the drawing mode so even if I’m not feeling it before I start, by the time I’ve gotten to the end I’m usually Ready For Drawin’. Brain hacks.

so, yeah! that’s a lot of words, but! Warmups are important! Save your joints, take less advil, do better drawings!

How on earth are you supposed to draw from a sholder? might as well tell me to draw from the foot. It makes no sense
