INSEASOFGREEN - A BLOG MASTERPOST

ABOUT ME

Heyo and welcome I'm Juno/Ghost/Slat - she/her - I'm 26 years old and an aspiring indie author! I live in the PNW of the United States, I tend to write and enjoy rending fantasy, specially long epics/series. I love dark and slightly depressing themes, dragons, and *sometimes* more sexually mature themes (not smut though. there's a fine line with how it's written imo)

ABOUT THE BLOG

Here I share my wips, currently only talking about one but I do have more, and sometimes share some tips or shitposts. I'm totally down for asks and tag games as well!

I also have a discord server open to join! We can sit and yap about our wips and oc! You might just be treated to hearing more about my not so talked about wips, as well as more info about my main wip!

Writing Ideas: Castles

Castles, fortresses, and fortified mansions can be military and administrative headquarters for medieval feudal overlords, romantic ruins in a nineteenth century Count's estate, or haunts for ghosts… They hold our imagination, they show up in historical fiction and fantasy alike.

Types of Castles by Location

  1. City castle. Found in the historical centre of a medieval city, and often as the core part of a larger fortification called a citadel, the urban castle houses the ruler of said city, city-state or realm of which this city is a capital.
  2. Rural castle. Built as a standalone structure, this type of castle was more widespread than the urban castle in Western Europe. Often castles planned as standalone structures attracted folks from nearby villages and grew towns around them, eventually becoming city castles and citadels.

Types of Castles by Construction

  • Motte and bailey. The most primitive kind of castle, the motte and bailey is barely above a pre-medieval hill fort. It is usually just a tower or a fortified manor standing on a hill, which may be a natural hill dug over with artificial trenches and berms or a wholly manmade mound (the motte). The motte was also outfitted with extra defences such as a wooden stockade (the bailey). Often the bailey was located sideways of the motte and did not encapsulate it; the steep slopes of the motte made walls unnecessary. Note that not all castles built on mottes are motte and bailey castles: the central section of the famous Windsor Castle, which is far from being "just a tower", has a large motte under it.
  • Keep and curtain wall. To improve the ability of a motte and bailey castle to withstand sieges, medieval engineers went for the most obvious decision: build a solid wall instead of a wooden stockade around the motte. They built massive walls, high enough to be unscalable without proper siege ladders, and later augmented those walls with towers. The towers provided defenders a vantage point for raining arrows onto the attackers. The tower also became more fortified and turned into a keep, or donjon - the main tower or fort of the castle, a smaller fortress inside it. Even when enemies breached or otherwise surmounted the curtain wall of the castle, the keep was able to fend them off for a while, hopefully until the relief or backup forces arrives.
  1. Moat. To add another layer of impenetrability to the curtain wall, medieval engineers augmented it with a deep ditch, or moat, around it. The purpose of the moat was to stop the attackers from breaking castle walls with battering rams and make it harder to use siege ladders. The moat was also often filled with water to stop undermining (digging under walls to make them collapse). A drawbridge or a permanent bridge could be used to cross the moat and reach the gate.
  2. Gatehouse. Because of the moat, the castle gate became the prime target for attempts to breach the walls and break in. So the gate naturally became more fortified, built into a large, wide tower: the gatehouse. A typical gatehouse contained a lot of security measures to make battering the gate harder: corridors, portcullises, arrow slits overlooking the bridge.
  3. Barbican. A barbican is another fortification built to protect the gate: a second, smaller gatehouse in front of it, connected to the main one with a pair of walls.
  4. Enceinte. An enceinte is the motte, Mk.II, now made of stone! It's an inner solid stone wall surrounding the keep, making it a castle within a castle.
  • Concentric castle. Combining all of the above defensive measures resulted in a complex, many-layered castle with two or more sets of curtain walls and a keep surrounded with an enceinte. Such castles were built during the Late Middle Ages.
  • Quadrangular castle. A late development in castle building, this style does away with the keep and turns the curtain wall into a large rectangular building with a courtyard. In essence, the curtain wall is used as the outer wall of the building.

After gunpowder artillery became the main weapon of sieges, castle architecture entered into decline.

  • Low-profile and complex structures with thick earth walls were needed to resist artillery bombardments, and castles made way for bastions, star forts and similar fortified structures.
  • However, during the period of Romanticism and Gothic literature in the XIX century, interest in castles renewed.
  • These "revival castles" served no defensive function and were just stylized stately homes for Blue Blood elites; the most famous example of such a castle is Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Germany.
  • In the 19th and 20th century, the romantic allure of castles even inspired some non-royals with deep pockets to build them as fantasy getaways.

What is you absolute favorite aspect of the main castle and why is it?

it's between the Vultis throne room and Ivaenia throne room. Vultis is very colorful with it's mosaics that tell the history of Vultis and it's people. Ivaenia is made out of aventurine and has a slightly green glow about it with the different ways the sunlight/candlelight hits the stone

Thank you for the ask Wyked!!! <3

happy STS! how do you choose the titles for your works? what about chapters, if you title them at all?

Avatar

answering this so late 😭 I'm sorry life is doing life recently rip.

but for how I choose the titles it's pretty random? there's no real rhyme or reason how I end up with the titles. I usually sit for an hour or two just throwing idea's out and seeing what sticks. "plight of the oracle" was by random, but it ended up working so well because for the whole series I want "plight of the ______"

As for chapter's, the ones I use are more for me. Something easy to recall what chapter was what. If they'll stay or if I use any chapter titles at all, remains to be seen. A little taste of the chapter titles I have: Omen, One-Seven-Five, White-Titan, Protector, No man's man, and I take thee. I have more than that but I ain't listen them all 💀

Thank you for your ask!!

Ryon's Wife looking a lot like Ryon's mom who he was pretty much forbidden to see at the age of 11-13 when he was sent away from home makes me sick. What makes me more sick if that his mother loved him so SO much because throughout the abusive and bs his father put her through she had managed through for Ryon and his younger brother. But she tragically died and Cyren remarried and replaced her so fast. to a Women only 10 years older than Ryon. Only for Cyren to make the match between Ryon and his wife, knowing Jeyna was going to make his Son's life hell on eath (or Nyrus I suppose lmao) while also having so many physical similarities to his mother. FUCK OFF FOR THAT. I hate Cyren so much 😭

hi hello i'm reading gotn and tittered a little when i saw this typo:

"to continue his knees"

gotta love it. i was supposed to say "to continue his notes."

anyways--gotn is MY therapy alongside evan's. lmao

"The the where summoned fourth by the steady beat of the procession drums."

i see your "to continue his knees" and raise you "the the where summoned fourth"

meant to be "Then they were summoned forth by the steady beat of the procession drums." but I'mma be so real it's a weird sentence even correctly spelt so I reworked it in the draft LMAO

What would be Jade and Amon’s stance on the timeless pineapple on pizza debate? (Hypothetically I suppose. Unless they have a really sick kitchen on board which if so hell yeah)

Avatar

@inseasofgreen thank you for the ask.

Heather does occasionally make flat breads with toppings ....and Jade would love it with pineapple and Galen's is subtly side eyeing him currently at the thought. (Not exactly pizza but close.)

They have a fairly decent galley on the ship lmbo even if Heather tends to make fish dishes frequently. Potatoes are another favorite and probably squash due to storage life of it but regardless they run into other ships and trade out cargo regularly to avoid having to port all that often.

why i hate "show don't tell"

this is inspired by a convo with a friend. feel free to discard if it doesn't resonate with you, but i thought i'd share regardless.

note, this is a highly unstructured toolbox post because i am quite literally copy-pasting my texts LMAOO

enjoy!

· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·

personally, i hate the show don’t tell advice.

LOL

i like to think of it as animation vs reflection: if your story was a movie, what would the camera focus on?

how the characters move, the things in the background, the lighting, the twitch in their expressions, their dynamic with other people

why? because you don’t get narration or inner thoughts in shows and film. you get the visual advantage. that’s your “show”.

how do i animate my scene?

meanwhile with tell, you have the journal entries. the dialogue, the personal thoughts, the conversations with friends. you have the ranting and the musing, the thinking and the worrying. you get a peak into the character’s mind. that’s your tell.

what words did they bite back?

showing is:

the flush of rouge sparked up his neck, matching the writhe of his hands behind his back.

telling is:

his thoughts spiralled as fast as his heart raced, all entranced by the depths of her eyes.

notice how they’re both kinda “showing”? and they’re both also kinda “telling”? that’s why i don't like the advice. one is an inner perspective. what does the character feel internally? the other is how they are perceived.

What flows grow most commonly in the kingdom are they useful or are they regarded as weeds?

Avatar

Thank you for the ask my dear wyked :) once again I apologize it being almost over a month now womp womp

I'll do the most common flower in Vultis! at least in the northwest territories, Vultis is too wide spread biome wise for it to be the most common over all.

Birds foot trefoil grows rampant, specially in the more rural areas. It can get to the point it does start to choke out other native flora but it's very useful for farmers with live stock and medics/apothecaries to go out and farm for it's more medicinal uses. It's a known painkiller and sedative. Over all it is pretty useful in day to day life.

There is some superstition around it though. Having it appear in any florals for a wedding brings bad luck to the future couple, if you receive bad news and see birds foot trefoil soon after it supposedly means the person who gave the bad news caused the bad news. A positive one is that if you stumble across it while lost in the wilderness you'll be stumbled across in a couple days time.

Zevetta and her 4 children usually have some nod to the plant in their clothing. There's a small floral design on all of Zemorri's breastplates, all of it birds foot trefoil. Though it's not tied to house Varzo, or even Zevetta's family's house. There is a reason why Zevetta does this and her kids follow suite even into adulthood but that's spoilers ; )

a picture for reference of what it looks like

Imagine Northwestern Vultis peoples bearing news just looking around cautiously before bringing their companions in a room without trefoil and delivering the message. I imagine immediate summons must be read indoors too since trefoil is so common... and removing trefoil while preparing wedding locations must be fun. I assume that the outdoors must not be a good place for marrying people, RIP.

Does the bad superstition also extend to manmade arts of the flower?

The wedding superstition was made more with Noble/Royal weddings in mind, I'd say it's something the lower classes don't hold on too as strongly, specially those in smaller villages/farmlands. Possibly due to the lack of having other options if they couldn't marry in a church or otherwise. Or even there being not as much at risk with alliances, there'd still be a dowry but there's still a better chance the couple knew each other in some regard before the marriage. Nobles often being married in arranged marriages and not always getting the brief courting period that's common in all social classes. Just higher stakes all round when both families could start a war, inheritances could be called into question and brought before the emperor, etc.

As for extending to manmade re-creations of the flower, yes but it depends on the person on how far they'll take it. It more so falls on to the individuals belief, what region they're from, you name it. Someone might not think much of it, while another might find it in poor taste and question whoever made/commissioned it.

I will add Zevetta and her children aren't the flashiest with tying it into their fashion. It's not always as obvious as it is with Zemorri's gorgets (I called it a breastplate originally but that's not what it is oops) The daughters and Zevetta do wear a lot of yellow as well, but that's a whole other can of worms that we don't need to get into lmao. It just ties into the use of the trefoil.

RYON ALTRIUMA CHARACTER INTRO

“I'm your son, is that not enough to earn your love? What am I saying, of course not. I could rewrite time it's self and undo all you hold against me and it would not change a damn thing. [...] I've bent backwards trying to appease you for so long, I forgot how to stand tall. You're wish is my command Father, I'm no son of yours anymore."

Ryon Altrium is a Prince of Ivaenia. He was the first of his cousins to be wed, marrying the Lady Jeyna. Though the couple spends more time apart than together. Far removed from the line of succession Ryon has had the ability to live more independently from the Crown. Often escaping the haughtiness of his family for long voyages across Nyrus. Along side helping strengthen alliances and trade deals for Ivaenia while traveling abroad, Ryon also runs a growing company with his business partner and the future Prince Consort of Ivaenia, Kasius Nadellio of Osca. Their line of work being transportation of goods and the disrupting of highly sought after jewels and fabrics.

Character + Room tag~

Thank you @theink-stainedfolk and @inseasofgreen for the tag!

Make a character with this Picrew then make that character’s room (if they have one, if no then just imagine one up) with this one.

Here is Azul~

And here is his room (let's pretend he has one for this fun game, okie?)

He doesn't need furniture, just somewhere he can throw his tired body onto after a day of commiting crime working.

~~~~
Tagging for this fun game @the-inkwell-variable , @finchmomentwrites , @finickyfelix , @rivenantiqnerd and open tag
He's adorable! I love his pretend room too
