How many drafts should you go through before deciding your novel is ready?

There's no specific (official) number, but to create a foundation that ensures you don't burn out quickly, overwork yourself, and get tired of your work, I'll say four. It's the same number I use for my students since most of them have other engagements outside writing that take up a copious amount of their time.

1. Initial or Zero Draft:

This draft is also called the 'just write' draft. Focus on putting that idea down. As the creative juices flow, let it all out. Don't worry about perfection or coherence; the goal is to capture your raw ideas and get the story out of your head and onto the page.

2. Second Draft:

This is the plot draft. Read through what you have written to see if every detail you added was meant to be. Here, you focus on the structure of your story. Ensure that the plot makes sense, the pacing is right, and there are no major plot holes. This is where you might add, remove, or rearrange scenes to improve the overall flow of the narrative.

3. Third Draft:

Character development draft. In this stage, you look deeper into your characters. Make sure their motivations, backgrounds, and arcs are well-defined and consistent. Flesh out their personalities and relationships, ensuring they are compelling and believable. This is also a good time to refine dialogue and make sure it sounds natural and true to each character. That's for this drafting stage.

4. Fourth Draft:

Grammar and punctuation draft. This is the polishing stage. Focus on correcting grammatical errors, punctuation, and spelling mistakes. Pay attention to sentence structure, word choice, and overall readability. This draft is about making your manuscript as clean and professional as possible.

Some writers pay people to carry out some of the drafting stages for them, so if you fall into that category, you might have fewer drafting stages to handle yourself!

I think every part has its place and leads into the next beautifully despite changing povs so I'd say it's more like a creek everything is flowing nicely and not to slow or rapid like a waterfall. If that makes sense?

This goes without saying, but I hope that everyone is taking care of themselves. (To be clear, everything is well with me—life’s just been busy as per usual).

In times of uncertainty, hold on to the connections you make, and the activities you enjoy. Tether yourself to life and get some sunshine. Go on a walk if you’re able to—appreciate nature. There will be harder days, but there will be happier ones, too.

Go back to your former hobbies, and recall the feelings of the first time you did it. Where were you? What was it like? What inspires you? Do something kind for yourself, even if the world doesn’t treat you as kindly. Be cordial with others, but treat yourself with kindness even if it means setting firm boundaries for your own health. You owe it to yourself to give your brain the best.

Optimism? You fucking bet. We only have one life to live, so we might as well make the most of it to the best of our capabilities. Take care of yourselves, and your communities.

As a writer, I can guarantee we don't know what we want half of the time.

Some days we want people to obsess unhealthily and make fan art of our characters and make Pinterest pins on quotes and create those fake twitter posts and then at the same time I would rather burn my house down before showing anyone my work.

Who created such a mentally damaging hobby and can they give me my sanity back???

Writers or other OC creators, I’m dying to know… which of your characters would and wouldn’t pass the “two beers and a puppy” test?

Interesting ask, but I’ll bite:

Kunio: Yes to both. But no more than two beers because I know that I couldn’t beat him in a drinking contest if I tried. He has an alcohol tolerance that’s higher than Wiz Khalifa, unlike me

Nathaniel: No and yes, in that order, but only because I’d feel bad drinking in front of someone who cannot drink alcohol for health reasons

Ariel: Yes to both. She is one of the most trustworthy people you could ever want to meet, and if you tell her a secret, she will take it to the grave

Solana: Yes to both. Again, she’s one of the most trustworthy people you could ever want to meet, and she’s really sweet and caring. She’s very much the cool big sis type

Pamela (MC of Blood On A Yellow Rose, which will be my next release after NOTBM): Yes and no in that order. Pamela is great fun to party with, and she’ll hook you up with any recreational substance you could want, but I wouldn’t trust her with a puppy. Despite being a doctor, she’s nowhere near responsible enough to care for anything but herself in her spare time

Zinnia: Yes to both. She loves to party, and she’s very much a dog person

Peter 🏴‍☠️: Yes and no. Great fun with a drink or two, but wouldn’t trust him with a puppy. A parrot maybe, but not a dog. People should be cautious around Peter, lest they end up robbed. 😂

Benjamin 👑: Yes to both. Despite him being angry half the time, it’s always for good reason. Benji is a cinnamon roll ✨

Ali 🧞‍♂️: Yes to both. He’s such an outgoing guy and puts his heart into everything he does. Although he is clumsy, his protective side will keep the puppy safe (and he loves animals, a walking green flag ✅)

Noah 📚: No and yes, but yes in a different way to Ali. Noah may be grumpy, but he is reliable and dependable. His no-nonsense attitude and serious demeanor means he takes his work seriously.

Tyrell 🏹: Yes and no. He’s great to shoot the shit with over two beers, but can be pretty selfish so I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving my puppy around him.

Gustav 🔥: Absolutely not. No and no. This giant is not to be trusted at all.

Itazura 🕶️: Yes to both. He may have a tough exterior, but deep down he has a huge soft spot. Outwardly very cool, but holds a warmth that makes him trustworthy

Tenshi 🪽: 1000% yes. I am absolutely grabbing him two drinks of his choice (something sweet, he wouldn’t like beer—I’ll still drink with him). Tenshi also has a pet he takes care of, but this angel would BE the puppy with how pure he is.

Jade: no and yes (his alcohol tolerance is low and he's a sad drunk.)

Oisìn: yes and yes (he's fairly well rounded but a little grumpy at times..he's fond of cats)

Daimhín: maybe and yes (is Oisìn around then yes and yes otherwise no as I guarantee mischief is afoot.)

Galen: yes and no (he's better with older animals but probably shouldn't be trusted with a very young kitten....just ask Jade who will start glaring again *not to worry the kittens fine.*)

Braith: no and no (ummm...yeah no to both...she's not exactly someone you want drunk as she may loose what little impulsive control she has and ahh she's never had a pet)

Morana: yes and yes ( she will be more baffling than normal and probably deeply confuse the pet but it'll be alright.)

Your First Draft Can Be Amazing

I know, that's not what I'm supposed to say, right? I'm supposed to tell you it's okay if it sucks. Well, there's enough people telling you that, and I don't want you thinking you have to hate it.

It can be amazing. It can be the most wondrous feeling as a new story slowly reveals itself to you. You can laugh and cry and rage and sing as it comes together on pages, created from your mind, your thoughts given form.

It won't be perfect. The second draft will be better, the third improve even on that.

But it can be good and even if it's not, you are allowed to love it.

It's your baby after all.

first drafts are a necessary evil, but that knowledge doesn't make it hurt any less. like, what do you mean it can't be perfect on the first try? what do you mean I wrote all this just to rewrite the whole thing? rude.

He still sounds like a little shit but I absolutely adore the character. Thank you for telling me about Hans and I'm sorry if you never get rid of him...(I'm hoping you don't.)
