My high school history teacher’s wisest advice was that you have to pay attention in history class so that you will understand jokes. And I think of him with righteous fury every time I see people on tumblr thoughtfully trying to explain a joke that requires the audience to have paid attention in history class. Don’t indulge them! Gatekeep the good jokes!

(*If you’ve lived in the Midwest for a considerable portion of time but don’t live there now and/or weren’t raised there, you count as Midwestern for the purposes of this poll.
**Use your discretion as to what counts as the Midwest. I’m counting Michigan and Ohio, personally, though I know there’s some debate over what counts as Midwest.)
This poll is brought to you by the fact that both my high school and university had Euchre tournaments (and the latter actually has a euchre club), and all of my Midwestern family members know how to play. But talking to my friends from the southern US and US east coast, none of them have heard of Euchre. So I’m trying to figure out if this is a regional thing or just a Michigan thing or what.
I would have loved to break down “non-US” into more categories, but the limited number of poll options really limited me here.
I read The Membranes by Chi Ta-wei - very cool Taiwanese dystopian sci-fi novella with queer & trans themes - and had a great time with it! I might talk a little more about it later.
But there's an afterword by the translator, Ari Larissa Heinrich, that goes into the historical context a little, about the influx of global art/literature/media into Taiwan post-martial-law in the 90s... and anyway, this specific detail killed me & I had to share it:
