chapter one: year zero

“Do you know anything about this Georgia Flu?”

In his mind he pictured his synapses riding a train that was suddenly speeding off its tracks and heading towards certain disaster. Buck struggled to focus again, completely taken off guard by the question. What had he been expecting, exactly? Not this.

“What, that thing overseas?” He wasn’t really one to follow the news in his spare time but Hen had kept one of the local channels on throughout dinner the night before and he remembered the vague headline about the latest epidemic ripping through parts of Europe and Asia. Rising numbers of infected people in major cities, scientists saying they were still trying to pinpoint how it was spread, the usual. Buck remembered being struck by how vacant eyed one doctor had seemed when asked about the rising death toll in his country.

As of right now, I’ve lost contact with my staff in Kyiv. I don’t have an exact number. This flu is spreading faster than we can learn about it.

I'd just like to clarify some things about Senator Cory Booker's marathon Senate speech in protest of the present administration and everything they are doing to the American people.

Senator Booker was NOT allowed to sit down, eat, or use the bathroom during his speech. Sitting or leaving the room to use the bathroom would be considered yielding the floor. Eating would have interfered with his speaking and the person who has the senate floor must continue to speak, except when listening to questions that they will then answer.

He only took occasional sips of water.

The person who previously held the record for longest speech on the Senate floor did have bathroom breaks and also did things like read from the encyclopedia.

Senator Booker did not do that. His speech was to point out the damage that this administration is doing and he stayed on that subject.

Senator Booker's speech did reach many people. It wasn't a silly stunt that was done so that he could take the record for longest speech. He wanted to show the country that democrats will do something to bring attention to the problems we are facing. That democrats are listening to them.

Senator Cory Booker spoke for 25 hours and 4 minutes to "make good trouble."

also like, a Black man breaking Strom Thurmond's record is absolutely *chef's kiss*

for those who are too young to know about Strom, he was literally a white supremacist

Cory Booker has been talking in the senate for over 20 hours now

He’s not filibustering. He’s protesting the current administration.

For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.

Senator Cory Booker isn’t doing that. He’s disrupting “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able”. Just in protest. This doesn’t usually happen.

He’s less than 20 minutes away from breaking the record of the longest speech given on the senate floor

Cory Booker has officially broken Strom Thurmond’s record for longest speech on the senate floor and he’s still going

For those of you wondering what he’s been talking about this whole time, his staff wrote down a bunch of stuff for him to read like stories from people across the political spectrum opposed to what the administration is doing. He’s also been telling personal anecdotes about meeting important civil rights leaders and other democratic senators have been pausing him for “questions” but the questions have been as long as a small speech and have both served the purpose of giving him a second to sit down and updating him on the news that he’s been missing while he’s been talking.

He has yielded the floor at 25 hrs and 4 mins. His eyes are so wide they look like they’re going to bug out of his skull so I don’t blame him for stopping. He said to go out and get in some good trouble.

actual funniest thing they could do: eddie and chris move back into the house. it is insinuated that eddie and buck are sharing the bed. this is never mentioned again and the show continues and they are living together but no one mentions it and then sometime deep in season 9 we get a shot of Eddie getting dressed in the morning while Buck is sleeping half naked in the bed

Help 😭😭😭 this post is not about queer platonic relationships this post is about The X-Files Season 7 episode 17 “All Things” written and directed by Gillian Anderson

Cory Booker is reading letters from his constituents and tearing up repeatedly and it’s making me cry.

Yes -- in case anyone thought their calls and letters don't matter, Cory Booker has launched a protest marathon speech on the Senate floor and is reading letters directly from his constituents. Their voices and words gave him something to share on the Senate floor directly from the American people.

I intend to call my senators tomorrow and let them know that I've heard about this, and will be sending them letters as well so THEY can speak up for their constituents, because I expect them to speak up.

as of this morning, tues. 4/1/25, the speech is still going, with booker only stopping to take questions from democrats. here is a link to a NYT article about it, in which they quote him as saying:

“In just 71 days, the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy and even our aspirations as a people for — from our highest offices — a sense of common decency…These are not normal times in America, and they should not be treated as such.”

here is a link to the livestream of the speech on senator booker’s youtube. the live chat when i last checked it was filled with supportive comments as well.

Still going. Still coherent, somehow! His staff did an insane amount of research to prep him for this.
