Pairing: Professor!Ben (College AU) x OFC Lydia/fem!Reader (reader POV/2nd POV)

Summary: Seeking a change of scenery after her life falls apart, Lydia crosses the Atlantic and arrives in a small New England town, to spend a year expanding her intellectual horizons as a visiting professor of art history at a small liberal arts college. Her growing friendship with Ben Morales, professor of Hispanic literature, forces Lydia to confront the fallout from her past - and raises unexpected questions about the future.

About Lydia: A couple of years ago she'd have told you her life was over. Now, at 41, Lydia has realised the future is hers to make - even if that means never opening her heart up again.

She's an art historian and European - though this should not be taken to imply a specific appearance or ethnicity! Her family and other aspects of her background are established.

You'll notice that the physical descriptors for Lydia are deliberately loose, other than: her age, that she's fem/AFAB, her hair is starting to grey, and she's got stretch marks and a whole metric ton of issues with her own body. In other words: she can look whatever way you want her to look in your own imagination, bearing these aspects in mind, and be from wherever you want her to come from.

Rating: Explicit (18+) - individual chapters will have their own ratings (there's a lot of fluff and angst ahead) but smut will be very clearly signalled. Expect bad language throughout. If you read beyond the warnings on each chapter, you are agreeing you're 18 years or older.

YES DOOOOO ITTTTT. And then let’s turn our blogs into nonstop sewing content until everyone blocks us.

But no, for real: sewing is the best. I’ve been doing it for like 14 years now and I’ve yet to seriously injure myself so it’s very safe. 😘

MEGANNNNNN!!! I admit it's fear born out of intimidation, lol. My mother is such a master seamstress, my own pitiful failings are hilariously paltry. BUT I have been itching for a new hobby, so why not?

I picked a great time to start, didn't I, with JoAnn's closing? 😭 No matter! The thrift store duds will have to do.

Uh, one quick question ....seriously injure yourself? 👀

Thanks for the encouragement!! I'll have to find a project and get going 🩵

I’ve recently been doing mostly upcycling and tailoring thrift finds, and it’s been so fun to introduce a little more sustainability into what can be a wasteful hobby - so I’m excited for you!!

And yeah: no serious injuries but some standard pin pricks, iron burns, and finger snips. Nothing that’s left a scar! 😆

I love upcyling! But if you do need stuff from a Jo-Ann's type place, Michael's is expanding to include fabric and sewing.

We also figured out—the hard way—that the ancients probably cut each layer of linen to the proper shape before gluing them together. For our first linothorax, we glued together 15 layers of linen to form a one centimeter-thick slab, and then tried to cut out the required shape. Large shears were defeated; bolt cutters failed. The only way we were ultimately able to cut the laminated linen slab was with an electric saw equipped with a blade for cutting metal. At least this confirmed our suspicion that linen armor would have been extremely tough. We also found out that linen stiffened with rabbit glue strikes dogs as in irresistibly tasty rabbit-flavored chew toy, and that our Labrador retriever should not be left alone with our research project.

I love this in every way possible. What is it from? Where can I read more?

The pitfalls of experimental archaeology and puppies.

“Unraveling the Linothorax Mystery, or how Linen Armor Came to Dominate our Lives.”

holy shit read the article. it’s short but wild

We found that even more of a threat than rain was one’s own sweat on a hot day. So, yes, it does need waterproofing, both inside and out. We did a number of experiments along those lines, and found that rubbing a block of beeswax over all sides of the armor provided nice waterproofing. It also makes the armor smell nice! When you wear it for a couple hours, your own body heat softens the glue a bit and makes it conform to your body shape, so it is much more comfortable to wear than rigid types of armor. Our reconstructions weighed about 10 pounds–about one third the weight of bronze armor that would provide the same degree of protection.

Honey i gotta go to war… not to smell my bee armor or hang with the boys or anything no.. uhh we need to uh do war things?

from the article:

While all of this mayhem (both scientifically controlled and free-form) convinced us that our linothorax was ancient-battlefield-ready, we still felt compelled to try a real-life scenario, so Scott donned the armor and Greg shot him. And while we had confidence in our armor, our relief was still considerable when the arrowhead stuck and lodged in the armor’s outer layers, a safe distance away from flesh.

a good life-size mannequin is expensive but i guarantee it would've cost way less than they were spending on all that linen.

Academics are just like that.

I would like to again gently remind everyone that by the end of the summer Pedro is going to be wildly overexposed. Because he’s going to be promoting from now until July.

We all love seeing him every day. But… there’s going to be backlash eventually. I’ve seen some stuff simmering.

I don’t have a real point here, it’s more of a be aware type of situation.

If you can’t even look anything but bored working alongside two of the most handsome men in Hollywood, why the fuck are people still casting you in movies? Your parents aren’t even that incredible to keep your nepo baby reputation this high.
