Darkweather Friend

@laqustrine

Primarily obsessed with AFTG, I fear...

You shouldn’t date or become serious friends/partners with someone if you can’t stomach the thought of being stuck in a car or train with them for 16 hours.

Here’s my logic:

  • You should be able to work together to solve unexpected problems like fixing a flat tire or getting lost in an unfamiliar station
  • You should feel comfortable and safe enough around this person that you can sit in comfortable silence
  • You should be able to keep each other interested and deal with each others boredom in a healthy way
  • If you’re gonna form a long term partnership with someone you should probably be able to tolerate each other while locked in a small box for a few hours

These tags are hilarious even though I don’t think you intended them to be.

*pulls European closer* The most populous countries in the world are China, India, the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Brazil in that order, with these seven nations alone making up 48.16% of the world population. You may note with the aid of a map that many of these nations are quite large, and would take several days of travel to go across either in cars or on boats. Almost half of the world's population lives in places where you can travel in a cramped vehicle for days and still be within the country. Your worldview is limited and Europe is a tiny outlier in travel time and standards for international relations.

I AM A HATER of that plot point in canon I'M SORRY

Mostly:

  • Of the way that it wasn't ever addressed as something that would seriously hurt Andrew and Kevin's relationship/require repairing and a lot of explanations from the both of them. Maybe we can pretend that that repairing happened off-page and Neil was just checked out on the relationship repercussions, who knows, but
  • I'm also generally not a fan of "character Z choosing X person over Y person" and I feel like a lot of people like the choking plot point because it's seen as proof that Andrew likes Neil SO MUCH that he would go back on his deal to protect Kevin, and I... don't vibe with that as a romantic reading of Andreil's relationship even.

The only way that I'd engage with it is as terrible angst that requires months long efforts into fixing (Andrew being so overcome with distress he'd disorganized and doesn't fully understand what he's doing + Kevin being terrified of Andrew and in PTSD land for a little while because of it, spiralling into wondering if he just *wanted* to believe Andrew was safe for him and now being stressed over parallels between his relationships with Riko and Andrew).

(Now I'm like 'oh wait should I--' but i have too many projects outside of AFTG fanfic haha)

PSA:

1. If you are not silly, it is vital you become silly

2. If you are silly, you must stay silly

2. If you used to be silly but have stopped, you must make all efforts to return to silliness

something about andrew developing very complex and very not-casual feelings for the mysterious, dangerous, temperamental new boy and just being like "yeah. i'd fuck you. what abt it" only for neil to respond with "omg really?? u mean it?.?? that's so cool. what's ur favorite color. mine's math. ur so pretty. i think i love you. we're boyfriends right"

meanwhile andrew maintains his stance of "please die" but he absolutely knows he got himself into this and will not be getting out

the first law of tragedies: the end is already written and inevitable. the second law of tragedies: your actions are all your own and you can choose to get off this ride whenever you want. the third law of tragedies: we both know that you are never going to do that.
