I'm a Museum Studies Master's student. I was in DC at the end of February to advocate for funding for IMLS (specifically the Office of Museum Services). We fought on Capitol Hill to secure funding from congress. We in museums, libraries, and archives are scared. We are watching the active tear-down of our livelihoods happen all around us. This DOGE takeover is a blatant attempt to defund education, defund community engagement, defund public access to knowledge.

Call your reps. Tell them how angry you are about DOGE doing this. Show up for your public library, show up for your local museum, speak out for the Smithsonian. Donate if you can (i know how tight funds are right now. I'm living it too)

Help us. We're small, we need the voices to back us up.

I don’t talk much about my real life on here, but I’m an Archives Master’s student who works in archives digitization. I cannot emphasize enough the points prev is making.

I walked into class this morning to the tear streaked face of my classmate who learned that they had to lay off 80% of their library’s staff. Coworkers and classmates have brought in emails threatening the imminent termination of their positions if they don’t leave to enter the private sector.

I know information professionals who have spent their lives defending the distribution of information and education of the public who are devastated by what is currently happening in the United States.

The current administration seeks to tear down cultural heritage institutions that seek to educate and preserve our nation’s, our people’s, history. God knows what they will build in its stead.

I am begging you. Don’t let this just be a post you reblog. Make your voice heard. Do what you can. Please.

Hey everyone, I know it's going to be a busy day for a lot of people, but Google enrolled everyone over 18 into their AI program automatically.

If you have a google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off.

Then you need to go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works.

Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit.

I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few minutes to do.

Writers: It's asking to read your Google Docs and be able to 'summarize' things from them and such things. I just turned all mine off.

Because this isn't mentioned above, also go to google.com/drive/settings and turn off all the annoying bits that interface directly with docs there.

This is all in the "privacy" tab of your settings. How fun that everything is hidden two layers deep. 🙄 This DOESN'T get rid of the stupid little star constantly asking you to use it, unfortunately, but that's what the picker in ublock is for. 😉

More detail instructions for OP's post for those who are confused. This is done from the browser on my laptop, I don't know what they look like on phones.

When you click the first link gemini.google.com/extensions, you need to click on the setting icon at the bottom, then choose "Extension", like this:

Scroll down a bit, you will see the options, turn them all off.

Then, you click on the second link myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, you'll see it tells you that it's already "turn off". NO! IT'S NOT! You have to click on that "Turn off" option, it'll drop down a menu like this:

Turn that thing off. Until that button shows you have to click to turn it back on like this:

And then, click on the delete button down there too, even if it says there's nothing to delete, just do it as a caution.

After you's done with those two. You go to your Drive, find the Setting button.

Click on the "Privacy" tab, choose the button "Manage Workspace smart feature setting"

Tick both of those off, then click Save. Or if you still want to use Google AI assistant for some reasons, please read the fine lines very very carefully.

Only then, you can feel safe enough with this force AI assistant bullshit. FOR NOW 🤡 All these steps still can't get rid of that Gemini blinkblink icon though >:(((((

Black Trans, Intersex, and/or Genderqueer Perspectives To Consider!

As a precursor to the next lesson I have coming up soon, I asked on this post for perspectives that I myself may not or do not have. While I'll be linking this in that lesson, I am putting it here as its own post because I believe they deserve to be spotlighted!

I don't care if it's "long" and "wordy"- if you intend to write about Black characters of these identities (or hell, even just to learn), and you want to be respectful about it, take the time to read the opinions of the real people whose lives you're trying to convey! Because we're not just fictional concepts or puzzles, we're real people who can read/see what you've created!
