A Series of Obsessions...with Series

@magnetocerebro / magnetocerebro.tumblr.com

I'm a bisexual Mormon mom of two, married to the sweetest man alive, fan of Marvel heroes but not always their comic writers' decisions, and I work as a freelance writer and have published my own books, including the Scaleshifter series! And if you want to read my fanfiction, I'm on A03 by the same name.

so simon & schuster sent my boss and i a bunch of scanned nancy drew covers so we can use them for various parts of our project and most covers had two files, one with text one without

except for nancy drew and the hidden staircase which i guess they started to remove the title on and then stopped so they just sent us

Weโ€™re not beating this post

What is superman's "Kryptonite".

In literature, mythology and comic books heroes often often have a "kryptonite" or "Achilles's heel", basically a weakness that makes them vulnerable. I'm curious what fans here would consider to be Superman's "Kryptonite"?

In case anyone finds it helpful because mobility aids are horrifically expensive and inaccessibleโ€ฆ

And for those people who have access to mobility devices but might benefit from a second chair they can abuse without risking expensive damageโ€ฆ

Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.

He also is working on cheap, open source, accessible designs for beach chairs, off road chairs, motorized attachments (think smart drive), and so on. Plus he skateboards in his wheelchair. Cool dude, helpful info, pass it on.

It's incredibly sad people have to resort to this, but it's a damn good resource. Use it. Spread awareness. Maybe one day people with physical disabilities won't need DIYs like this. But until then, reblog and share.

not to sound like a christian facebook mom but some of yall need to have grace in your hearts for the people in your lives or the people you pass once on the road and never see again like you literally need to stop assuming the worst of everyone and their intentions it is poisoning your brain. you can be careful and responsible without being a miserable person. it is possible i promise

โ€œSome years ago, I was stuck on a crosstown bus in New York City during rush hour. Traffic was barely moving. The bus was filled with cold, tired people who were deeply irritatedโ€”with one another; with the rainy, sleety weather; with the world itself. Two men barked at each other about a shove that might or might not have been intentional. A pregnant woman got on, and nobody offered her a seat. Rage was in the air; no mercy would be found here.

But as the bus approached Seventh Avenue, the driver got on the intercom. โ€œFolks,โ€ he said, โ€œI know youโ€™ve had a rough day and youโ€™re frustrated. I canโ€™t do anything about the weather or traffic, but hereโ€™s what I can do. As each one of you gets off the bus, I will reach out my hand to you. As you walk by, drop your troubles into the palm of my hand, okay? Donโ€™t take your problems home to your families tonightโ€”just leave โ€˜em with me. My route goes right by the Hudson River, and when I drive by there later, Iโ€™ll open the window and throw your troubles in the water. Sound good?โ€

It was as if a spell had lifted. Everyone burst out laughing. Faces gleamed with surprised delight. People whoโ€™d been pretending for the past hour not to notice each otherโ€™s existence were suddenly grinning at each other like, is this guy serious?

Oh, he was serious.

At the next stopโ€”just as promisedโ€”the driver reached out his hand, palm up, and waited. One by one, all the exiting commuters placed their hand just above his and mimed the gesture of dropping something into his palm. Some people laughed as they did this, some teared upโ€”but everyone did it. The driver repeated the same lovely ritual at the next stop, too. And the next. All the way to the river.

We live in a hard world, my friends. Sometimes itโ€™s extra difficult to be a human being. Sometimes you have a bad day. Sometimes you have a bad day that lasts for several years. You struggle and fail. You lose jobs, money, friends, faith, and love. You witness horrible events unfolding in the news, and you become fearful and withdrawn. There are times when everything seems cloaked in darkness. You long for the light but donโ€™t know where to find it.

But what if you are the light? What if youโ€™re the very agent of illumination that a dark situation begs for?

Thatโ€™s what this bus driver taught meโ€”that anyone can be the light, at any moment. This guy wasnโ€™t some big power player. He wasnโ€™t a spiritual leader. He wasnโ€™t some media-savvy โ€œinfluencer.โ€ He was a bus driverโ€”one of societyโ€™s most invisible workers. But he possessed real power, and he used it beautifully for our benefit.

When life feels especially grim, or when I feel particularly powerless in the face of the worldโ€™s troubles, I think of this man and ask myself, What can I do, right now, to be the light? Of course, I canโ€™t personally end all wars, or solve global warming, or transform vexing people into entirely different creatures. I definitely canโ€™t control traffic. But I do have some influence on everyone I brush up against, even if we never speak or learn each otherโ€™s name. How we behave matters because within human society everything is contagiousโ€”sadness and anger, yes, but also patience and generosity. Which means we all have more influence than we realize.

No matter who you are, or where you are, or how mundane or tough your situation may seem, I believe you can illuminate your world. In fact, I believe this is the only way the world will ever be illuminatedโ€”one bright act of grace at a time, all the way to the river.โ€œ

I think itโ€™s time this got another airing.

I know this is going to make me sound pretensions but I have to get it off my chest. I feel an unimaginable rage when someone posts a photo and is like "this picture looks like a renaissance painting lol" when the photo clearly has the lighting, colors and composition of a baroque or romantic painting. There are differences in these styles and those differences are important and labeling every "classical" looking painting as renaissance is annoying and upsetting to me. And anytime I come across one of those posts I have to put down my phone and go take a walk because they make me so mad

In case you're curious here's what I mean.

Renaissance(distinct lines, stability and the individual man):

Baroque (bold, chaotic, dramatic):

Romantic(romanticize the simple hard working life):

Do you see the difference?

this post has re-wired my brain in the best way

That third picture is a re-discovered Hammershรธi.

Iโ€™ve been listening to the people in the apartment below me have arguments for two years now and I still canโ€™t figure out what language theyโ€™re speaking. The best I can narrow it down is like if Portuguese and Hebrew had a baby. Is that a common pidgin combination

I just listened to a clip of this and jesus christ you fucking got it. there are like 3500 people in the whole united states who speak this and two of them are in a very fraught marriage four feet below me

"I have depression." - character who has been through extensive therapy.

"I feel dead inside all the time and nothing helps!" - character who does like, regular introspective thinking and is aware of the concept of mental health.

"Leave me the fuck alone I'll be fine once I get over my stupid shit." - repressed character.

"It's fine I'm just having an Empty Time. What? Yeah, empty times, you know, when everything is like bzzzzzz in your brain and you don't shower for two weeks. Why, what do you call it?" - ooooughhh now we're talkin

I donโ€™t care how contrived it is. I will always enjoy two characters who donโ€™t like each other somehow getting trapped in the same place, and having to work together to escape, while at the same time growing closer and learning that maybe, the other person isnโ€™t so bad after all.

Will also willingly take two characters who hate eqch other doing the same shtick as above, only afterwards, they use everything personal they found out in that elevator or whatever to go EVEN HARDER at each other.

never forget the universal rule of the order of things: People Will Not Read It

signs at stores? รฉmail? menu ?? instruction ? post online ? caption with andswer to question ? group hand outs ??? street sign ??? no. The Written Word Is The Enemy

The ability to occasionally Read A Thing will make you a hero in your workplace, especially if it is for example an error message that tells you what you need to do differently, or instructions on unjamming a printer.

how dare you say we put jam in the printer

A Short and Timely Lesson about Reed Smoot

If you've never heard of Reed Smoot before, y'all are about to see his name quite a bit.

He was an apostle.

He also formed a crucial piece of legislation with tariffs that pushed the U.S. economy deeper into the Great Depression.

This isn't the Church History you'll hear mentioned at church, but that's all the more reason you need to understand some lessons from it.

Being an apostle will not stop anyone from making terrible decisions. Reed Smoot was an apostle when he tanked the U.S. economy as a senator from Utah.

An apostle is qualified uniquely to testify of Jesus Christ. This doesn't make him qualified to divine insight into much else, especially not as it relates to money. In fact, following apostles over the cliff in how they use their money is a mistake that many Church members have made throughout history. Do not ever assume that a person's position in the Church means you can accept their financial advice uncritically.

No one ever thinks it's going to be the person they trust to crash the economy and lose all of their money, until it happens to them.

Kirtland Safety Society? Anyone?

Tariffs are one of the last sign posts you pass on your way to economic devastation that no one argues about calling a Depression.

The fact that the last time the United States made this mistake with tariffs was at the behest of a sitting apostle is one I don't think our people have sufficiently internalized as fact.
