DUDE IT’S PEDO FICS EVERYBODY THINKS THEY’RE NASTY

Let me explain this to you in simple terms.

Something being nasty is not a good reason to ban fiction about it.

If we accept that "something being nasty is a good reason to bad fiction about it" then we give a foot in the door for all the people who truly, genuinely believe that queer people are nasty to ban all queer literature.

This is not about defending bad people this is about defending the freedom of good people from tyranny, you moron.

I think if you take it to its logical extreme. Say, banning people from writing stories of sexual abuse. That could then be said "well ANY talk about sexual abuse is bad."

And from that, you could ban books that talk about it irl. Or books like how to recover after being abuse. If its not something to be discussed AT ALL.

The fact that I’ve seen this post in some form on my dash like 100x and each time there’s new idiots who do not get that you can’t have *some* censorship.

Either you’re for it or you aren’t.

The moment you agree that something should never, ever exist in fiction is the moment that anything can be banned.

Remember a while back how Tumblr banned a bunch of tags, including many popular innocuous ones that even people who are for censorship used and were upset about?

When censorship happens, stuff YOU like can and will be banned. That’s how it works.

Remember how a bunch of people had their accounts terminated here only last year for writing about their own sexual abuse?

When you ban “pedo” topics, say, any talk of child sexual abuse in any form, that means people can no longer write about their own experiences. It means people cannot educate others so they can learn how to protect themselves or get help from these situations.

Censorship is authoritarian. Full stop.

Even if “everyone” agrees something is “gross” and “shouldn’t exist,” that does not fucking matter.

Do you know who generally believes queer people are gross and shouldn’t exist??

The same people who are banning books left and right solely because they have queer characters or relationships.

The same people who attack and kill queer folk for simply exisiting.

This is not just some fandom matter or a case of being chronically online.

Protecting freedom of expression is essential, and if you do not get that, I don’t know what to say to you.

And the people who keep bringing up child sex abuse as a reason for censorship are doing it very specifically because everyone feels like then they HAVE to agree with the person in favor of censorship.

It’s not that there isn’t widespread societal agreement on this. It’s that they want you backed into a rhetorical corner where you feel compelled to agree with them.

Also, like, we KNOW how this shit shakes out in fandom because it's happened before.

In 2007, Livejournal capitulated to the "pedophilia and sex crimes!" cries of (hate group) Warriors 4 Innocence, and you know what communities got shut down? Slashfic communities. Sexual assault survivor support communities. Authors who'd written non-smut m/m fic even got caught up in it. It was DEVASTATING to fandom spaces. I think pretty much everyone knew at least one person whose account was literally DELETED, or were a member of a community that was wiped off the map because they were considerate enough to include topics like "sexual assault" or "BDSM" in the profiles under the badly-named category of "interests" to indicate that posts on said blogs or communities may include discussion of things like that. Even if it was for a SUPPORT group. And it was because a group of religious bigots came to LJ and said essentially "EVERYONE thinks it's gross and that it's promoting CSA, we should ban it."

Like, strikethrough and boldthrough were a large part of what propelled AO3 out of a more unfocused conversation on one person's blog about hosting a site INTENDED for fandom content, into being an actual archive and nonprofit. And it's a large part of why you won't find AO3 banning topics that you find "gross".

Censorship is authoritarian and it will ALWAYS have more collateral damage than you can imagine.

Going to add that fiction which had sexual abuse and communities which played around with it as a writing topic are the very things that protected me from irl sexual abuse when I was a teenager. I was in a dicey situation, and realized that while my situation did not match up to any of the superficial or textbook cases mentioned in passing (if at all) through school, it matched up a LOT to what I'd learned about irl sexual abuse through works of fiction and the rhetoric of my communities. I got out of that situation and dodged what was, in retrospect, one hell of a nasty bullet. If it hadn't been for that "nasty" fiction and those "nasty" communities, I would very likely have been abused, and subject to further violence spiraling out from that abuse.

Is it me or do some spaces kinda gloss over the fact that Anakin is a fascist? It’s not as simple as him being apolitical and siding with Palpatine solely to save Padme. There was a whole exchange in Attack of the Clones in which Anakin says that dictatorships are justified, we even made a whole meme about it. That was a scene Lucas chose to include.

And you can see exactly how his Chosen One delusions feed into that; Anakin’s told that he’s a powerful, exceptional person who must guide the disorganized masses into peace and order! I wonder if George was critiquing the Chosen One trope via Anakin’s downfall, but then again he did admit that his plans for the sequels involved Leia being the true Chosen One by restructuring the post-Empire galaxy so maybe not.

I get that Anakin’s obsession with Padme is more romantic on a literal and figurative sense but no he genuinely agreed with the Empire’s politics. Would he be insincere, and burn the galaxy to save Padme? Obviously. But when we discuss why Anakin goes along with Palpatine even after that fails, I don’t think it’s as simple as “Oh he has nothing left, he’s just a slave obeying his master” because he did genuinely go on a spiel about having brought peace and order to his new Empire. On some level, Anakin’s devotion to Palpatine DID pay off in his eyes, he was accomplishing another goal of his at least.

What you forget about fascism is that it aims for to reach people's emotions and there is a reason why it is appealing to certain people: It promises safety by taking away not just the choices, but the responsibility of your actions.

A fascist person usually never a cartoon villain of "I'm Evil McBadguyman and I will kill everyone because it's fun". Your average fascist neighbour who is not a politician in important position usually doesn't think what they do is evil and that's the scariest part.

Fascist values aiming to touch that very specific point in your brain by saying: "Hey. I know you are struggling and I know why. Here is the reason why [very specific reasons]. Now I'm promising you safety and for me to protect you from these fears to come true, you have to trust me that what I do, I do it for YOU. You have to trust me that this is for your own good. Without question. And you have to promise me, you will behave good".

Those who lives under constant fear to lose something important are prone to accept extremist ways. Those who never experienced true freedom, who never experienced having actual choices in their lives, will most likely to choose the path where someone else taking control. Because that's the only way they know.

Anakin was raised in slavery and then he gets into the Jedi Order where rank based hierarchy is a thing, and yes, then this Choosen One prophecy gives another set of responsibilities to him he didn't ask for/wasn't ready for. And at the same time, Palpatine starts to groom him as well.

Anakin always mimicking the person's worldview who is close to him. When he was close to Obi-Wan, he wanted to be the perfect Jedi. When he was close to Padmè, he wanted to be the perfect and mature adult Padmé can respect. When he was close to Palpatine, he wanted to be the perfect... he wanted to be worthy for his friendship and attention. Palpatine believes in power and oppression? Well, Anakin will justifiy power and oppression because his friend cannot be evil who will hurt him... right?

You would think that fascism aims for the evil people but no. Fascism aims for those who have something to lose:

"You are living in shitty conditions because [specific people] takes away the [specific thing] from you. If we don't have these [specific group] around, everything will be fine. But then we forgot to mention that these other [specific group] also in connection with the first enemies. Here, let us take care of them. Oh no. Another [specific group] emerged..." <- Fascism always needs a public enemy they can protect you from. It needs to maintain the sense of fear. It groomes you to look for enemy everywhere while promising that you don't have to live in fear IF certain conditions are met IN THE FUTURE. It's almost neverending. It feels neverending.

The problem is not that Anakin loves his Mom or his wife, the problem is that he let fear control his whole life. And fear is the path to the Dark Side as we know. And if making the whole galaxy live under a fascist rule to get rid of this fear, then so be it.

I don't agree that the fascist rule of Palpatine pays off to him. What did he gained after all, especially that he actually lost everything?

I think what happened with Anakin is a tragedy. And a really good representation what happens when the abused person stays with his abuser/groomer. Because living under a fascist government exactly feels like this: An abusive parent who will say to their children "I love you". "I love you" while cradling you, but the hands are actually on your neck, ready to break it if you don't behave.

I need to know more about immunology in Star Wars so bad I can't fully convey it. do you understand how insane your immune system would have to be to survive in a galaxy of thousands of livable planets? do you know how many memory B- and T- cells your body would need to deal with that many pathogens?

like, one explanation is that pathogens just aren't as varied in the Star Wars universe as they are in ours, but that's a horrifically boring explanation and I don't like it one bit. another is that all starfaring species have developed immune systems that are way more complicated than ours, and that their bodies just hold more immune cells than ours by orders of magnitude.

but another explanation I thought of while loading up my laundry machine is that multi-cellular species have developed some form of microbe-mediated secondary immune system, where the beneficial microbes living in their bodies (probably bacteria, or whatever the GFFA equivalent is) do the bulk of the defense against pathogens. this would be weird as fuck, but they've also got magic bacta that fixes fatal wounds, so I think it's the most plausible explanation I've come up with so far.

this also begs the question: do people have to get particular medical care when they go to a new planet, like a round of booster vaccines? or maybe they have to down a glass of probiotics that are more appropriate for the new world they've arrived on. the possibilities are endless honestly.
