btw brazilians and colombians get significantly lower quality coffee for a way higher price than in the european nations to which it gets exported. over 80% of brazilian coffee leaves the nation, and the price of coffee in brazil has recently skyrocketed, despite the fact that it is responsible for 38% of the world's yearly coffee production.
theres some 500 years of history on why that is, which you should read, but it is somewhat sufficient to keep in mind that the first world requires the exploitation of the third to maintain its luxuries.

i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that we needed to give to the poor. working at soup kitchens. making quilts. collecting food and money and supplies. building houses. because it was the christian and just plain right thing to do.
now they look at me, on food stamps with their grandchildren, and lament the "welfare state".
i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and that any rich man, especially an immoral one, should never run our country.

when did they forget?
Some of the older generation were radicalized by social media or conservative news media. Some people just changed as they aged, too. I don't know all of the causes.
But one thing that I do know, is that there were a lot of genuinely progressive, good-hearted, justice-seeking Boomers, people who sought to make the world a better place every day they lived, in any way they could. I knew a number of them myself. And what happened to them? They died.
As a generation ages, more and more of them die. And the ones that die younger tend to be the less wealthy, the less secure, the less privileged. So as the Boomers age, more and more, the ones that are left are more conservative, more reactionary, more privileged. Not all, of course, but as a proportion, the progressives shrink in number.

Because the crabs are raised in a lab, they don’t have any experience with predators. So before putting them onto the reef, Spadaro and his team may have to condition them to fear things like octopuses, snappers, and groupers. One way to do this is by using puppets modeled after predators. By putting these puppets in the tanks while poking at the crabs, the crabs learn to move away from the threat. Several months ago, Mote partnered with a local elementary school and had students craft hand puppets, modeled after crab predators, to use in fear conditioning. (Fortunately, the crabs don’t have great vision.)
