Character in Search of an Exit

Are you a witch or are you a fairy? Or are you the wife of Michael Cleary?

Meduseld's Terror February Flash 2025ย Masterlist

After a really fun challenge (all of which can be found here) and the stellar people over on Discord's enabling, here's the roundup of all nine (9!) works I created for it:

  1. My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Meย  Edward craves punishment. John offers absolution. (Littleving are undernegotiated but loving)

2. For Saints Have Hands (That Pilgrims' Hands Do Touch) Jopson has many attributes. Irving has a favorite. (Jopving, an ode to Liam Garrigan's hands)

3. Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Ladย  In the ice, Stanley and MacDonald manage to kindle some warmth.

(MacStan shenanigans, with some feelings sprinkled in)

4. These Hands Can Fold into a Claspย  George survives. The problem, afterward, is living.

(Somber but ultimately hopeful Lietcule after the end)

5. Do Not Be Hasty In the Laying on of Handsย  There is a danger, to intimacy. John learns that firsthand.

(Just pre-canon Solving with Jirv's whole deal)

6. Take Mine In Its Place It is not enough to bring them back to England, for Edward. He makes them their own world, instead.

(The Lietcule goes full goth and manages something like a happy ending)

7. Hรก de Haver um Dia After the Carnivale, they meet each other at last.

(Some sweet, sweet Fitzier hurt/comfort)

8. No Ballad Will Be Writtenย  Unnoticed and unexpected, Billy and Collins come together.

(Period typical attitudes meet hold hookups and feelings)

9. Made Complete In Usย  John Irving returns home, and finds that his love has endured.

(Post-canon Malving marriage bc Elphie is will not settle for less)

Hey. Look at me. Please leave yourself a note somewhere you'll see it later that says "it is going to take years if not decades to get the United States government to the level of functionality it had in November of 2024." If we elect a democrat in 2028, we are not going to be up and running by 2032.

Please make sure you have a reminder in your phone reminding you to not look at 2028/32/36 Democratic candidates and say "why are they not promising/delivering Cool Shit?" because you are going to understand that to get Cool Shit we must have competent people running a decently funded government, and we are not going to have that.

We are not getting UBI. We are not getting single payer healthcare. We are not getting free college or free preschool. We are not redistributing wealth on a large scale. We are not getting free internet. We are not getting ranked choice voting.

If we are lucky, we are going to get an IRS that can collect taxes, qualified schoolteachers, research grants, Social Security, and a government that thinks maybe it should be a priority for people around the worlds to not have AIDS, malaria or TB.

please elaborate on ghosts as pollution

If you leave a corpse in a river and it fucks up the river, that's pollution. If you leave a soul in a doll so it fucks up a house, that's pollution. Human waste product that requires proper ecological reintegration. Simple as.

also the fact that drummond is killed on accident in the elevator due to the muscle spasms of the innie/outie switch-- the process is VIOLENT and is always violent and is always a death and for once it happened to lumon upper management rather than staff. the metaphor. i love it.

So many of us guessed Cold Harbor itself is what would kill Gemma somehow

But really, it was so much simpler than that. Cold Harbor wasn't going to kill Gemma...it was just the last use for her at Lumon. Once she finished the last test, she was expendable. Mark S too.

"If you've finished the file shes already dead" not because of some complex sci-fi horror saw trap. It's so much simpler than that: if a company has extracted all of the value they see in a worker, they'll discard them without a second thought.
