Midwestern Monster Hunt

@midwesternmonsterhunt / midwesternmonsterhunt.tumblr.com

A blog dedicated to chronicling an exploration of the weird, spooky, and monstrous stories of the Midwest. More Scully than Mulder. None of the investigators have been eaten by a lake monster. Yet.

What, the forest-dwelling entities with imperfect human mimicry who insinuate themselves into groups of hikers? Yeah, we had one of those. Clocked it immediately, of course. Honestly it kind of fell in that so-inept-it's-kind-of-charming range. We just played along until it'd had it's fill of marshmallows and shambled back into the treeline. We might have been violating some kind of killjoy wildlife contact best practices but what the hell, can't plan around every little thing. Why, what happened to you guys

these tags are gold omg

It's a misconception that the mimics are hunting humans when they trail along at the back of hiking groups.

In fact, the creature you'll find suddenly walking beside you and acting as if they've always been there is almost certainly a juvenile, as the adults lose the ability when they reach reproductive age.

Recent studies suggest the forest mimic is less like a preying mantis (mimicry as a hunting strategy) and more like a cuckoo (mimicry as a protective strategy for their young). Adult forest mimics will leave their offspring near a group of hikers while they forage during the day, and retrieve them near trailheads in the evening. Groups of hikers provide safety from predators and allow the parents of the species the freedom to forage more widely.

For this reason, the traditional advice to never let a mimic into your vehicle is still very important, as this would separate the young mimic from its mother. If a juvenile forest mimic does follow your group to the parking lot, you can keep it entertained with trail snacks, dad jokes, and simple goofs. The mother will usually collect them shortly before sunset.

When you notice the woods around the trailhead go silent and feel a sense of nameless foreboding, find an excuse to avert your attention from the juvenile so it can sneak back into the forest to rejoin its mother, convinced it's fooled another party of unsuspecting humans.

surprisingly wholesome takes from the cryptid community here

The Institute of Museum & Library Services is the major funder of museums, libraries and archives through grant funding in all 50 states. It's impact is vast and local. It is the historic house museum where 5th graders learn about the American Revolution. It is the local library adding new computers and a second language classes for immigrant families. It is the storage for delicate artifacts, and the braille labels next to paintings. It is funding for jobs and learning resources to preserve and protect our shared cultural heritage and the loss of IMLS puts it all at risk.

Call your senators and representatives. Clicking the link will take you to a draft script. Members of congress are home this week so make sure to call their federal and district offices!

Write your Members of Congress. Clicking the link will also take you to a letter template to send. Customize it with your stories because those make these letters more impactful!

Please contact your Congress members and support your local libraries and museums!

It got worse. They're moving *fast*. Museums are just... fucked. Libraries... are... well, if they weren't before, they're definitely at risk now.

I've worked in both worlds, and watching the careers and worlds I've loved falling apart is brutal and heartbreaking.

If you want to protect your local libraries and museums, do everything above AND you need to talk to your local legislature. Museums and libraries are supported by state funding as well as national funding. They are funded by local funding. Your local taxes might be covering half of that library or museum's budget. A lot of local libraries are under fire right now. Support them locally and nationally.

The Extraterrestrial Highway (the official name of Nevada State Route 375), May 2024. As Wikipedia puts it,

"The top-secretย Area 51ย government base is near SR 375, and many travelers have reportedย UFOย observations and other strange alien activity along this road. Such stories prompted the state to officially designate the route as theย Extraterrestrial Highwayย in 1996."

Sadly, I didn't see any aliens or UFOs, but I was just using it to get from one part of Nevada to another (and wanted to at least be able to say I'd driven it ๐Ÿ˜€). It's definitely kind of remote, and what few locals there are along it play up the ET thing amusingly and (generally) good-humoredly.

1. Forced Resignations Are Illegal - 5 CFR ยง 715.202 states that federal resignations must be voluntary.

An email implying "uncertainty of your position" while pushing resignation deadlines may be coercion, which could be challenged as constructive discharge under MSPB precedent (Baldwin v. VA).

2. Reductions in Force (RIF) Must Follow Regulations - 5 CFR Part 351 requires agencies to use retention registers based on tenure, veteran status, and performance for RIFs.

If the email's proposed "deferred resignations" bypass these protections, it may constitute an illegal backdoor RIF.

3. Federal Employees Have Telework Rights - The Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 (5 U.S.C. Chapter 65) protects telework arrangements.

A blanket return-to-office mandate that overrides existing agreements could violate statutory rights and collective bargaining agreements (5 U.S.C. Chapter 71).

4. At-Will Reclassification Is Not Lawful - Federal employees in the competitive service are protected by 5 U.S.C. Chapter 75, requiring just cause for termination.

This email's suggestion of shifting employees to at-will status contradicts federal job protections and would likely face MSPB challenges.

5. Misuse of Legal Citations - The email cites Executive Order 9830 (1947) and 5 U.S.C. &ยง 301, 1103, 1104 as authority for these workforce changes. However:

* EO 9830 only governs post-WWIl civil service rules and does not grant power for resignations, RIFs, or telework policy changes.ย

* 5 U.S.C. ยงยง 301, 1103, 1104 allow agencies to handle personnel functions but do not override merit system protections or authorize at-will conversions.

When I was a kid I had a book of like, "fun physics experiments for kids". And one of them was an "experiment" where you hold an object by a string and just by focusing on the direction you wanted it to swing, it would start to move in that direction even without your input. The book of course explained that this was the ideomotor effect, a phenomenon where your thoughts can create minute, unconscious movements in your body.

Then a couple years later I got a fortune-telling kit that included a pendulum. You hold the pendulum over a piece of paper that says "yes" and "no" and ask a question, and whichever way the pendulum moves is the answer.

At which point I was like "hey WAIT a minute", and in hindsight I think that experience explains most things about who I am as a person

Giant rabbits are reported in a couple parts of the USA. In Lake Bomoseen Vermont there were reports of rabbits as big as a Saint Bernard dog. In Coon Rapids Minnesota a large rabbit was seen hopping around. Jay Rath connected the Minnesotan report with phantom kangaroos

Honestly if you had never seen a continental giant or a flemish giant before, if you saw one that had gotten loose you could easily think this was some kind of critter unknown to science; those guys can get to be three feet and 25 pounds, which your brain is going to interpret as Way Too Big to be a normal rabbit.

ICE raids happening in Chicago on Tuesday January 21st. Get organized and get prepared.

what to do if you are arrested or detained by law enforcement, a resource from the National Immigration Law Center, available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Korean, Tagalog, and Vietnamese

immigration law help, database of free and low-cost immigration lawyers, searchable by zip code as well as by detention facility if you or a loved one has already been detained

report an ICE raid or arrest in Chicagoland to the Resurrection Project, a Chicago nonprofit that works on immigration justice as well as housing affordability and other community needs

for those of us watching in horror from the sidelines, one of the best things we can do right now is donate to immigrant justice legal services, like the National Immigrant Justice Center or a local group in your community

in the longer term, we can all help by speaking out in support of immigrants and against these xenophobic deportation campaigns โ€” in public discourse and in caring but firm one-on-one conversations with loved ones who've been swayed by hateful anti-immigrant rhretoric
