How to avoid accidentally looking like a bot on tumblr

As somebody who trawls my follower list every now and then to clear it of bots (especially porn bots) I often have to double check a few people because it’s not immediately clear. I’m sure nobody wants to accidentally get blocked or worse, reported, for being mistaken for a bot.

So, for tumblr newcomers or younger people just learning the ways on the site, here’s a list of very basic things just to show you ARE a person and not something else using tumblr’s follow mechanic to artificially inflate interaction with your off-tumblr website to increase its chances of showing up in Google searches;

Have an avatar. This is an easy one. Most bots have avatars but not having an avatar just makes you seem like a complete unknown, and many people will decide its a risk worth taking in just blocking you in case you ARE a bot.
Do NOT make your avatar a selfie. DO NOT DO THIS. Ignoring basic internet safety, on tumblr especially this is a terrible idea. THE MOST popular thing porn bots on tumblr like doing is having their avatars of attractive women or men posing for a selfie. Pulling a face vastly lessens this, but using a photo of yourself when you felt you were having a good face day? NOT ADVISED. You immediately look suspicious on tumblr. (this is for all genders and not specifically women, as the porn bots on tumblr cover a vast array of preferences and in some cases kinks. Although the majority of the pron bots use photos of women).

In relation to the one above DO NOT USE A PHOTO OF YOURSELF IN EXERCISE GEAR. Almost every avatar I’ve seen on my followers who have this turns out to be a porn bot.
Title your blog. No seriously. I don’t care if you title it “What do I title this?”. ANYTHING IS GOOD. Because every time I see a blog called “Untitled” in English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Korean etc etc I am IMMEDIATELY suspicious, and have blocked blogs just in case.
You can make your username anything you like, but I highly discourage calling yourself something like “Human name” followed by a bunch of numbers without any dashes. Something like Lucy9228. Do not do this. Most tumblr bots who do not steal deactivated usernames will have usernames along these lines. Even choosing something like xXLucyXx is better.
reblog at least ONE thing to your blog. Something fandom related, or a recipe, or a photo you like. I do NOT recommend reblogging any posts that are links to out of site news articles or petitions or anything along those lines, because that will look suspicious like you’re posting a link that will lead to a virus or something. But legit, anything that bots simply would not be interested in, to show other people you ARE actually a person
Alternatively, make at least ONE post. a text post is fine. Make a text post saying “lol promise I’m not a bot”. That’s all you gotta do. so many blogs that follow me are completely blank, no avatar, no title, no header and don’t seem to have reblogged or made a single post of their own. It is infuriating because how am I to ever know if my blog is being used to inflate an off-site’s views that I don’t want to be affiliated with? Even if you use your tumblr for nothing but likes and sending asks, have at least ONE post of some kind that is obviously not a bot reblogging posts made by other people.

That’s about it tbh. Of course there are a lot of other ways to make it easy to notice you’re not a bot, but I feel these are the lowest effort minimums you can do to avoid looking like one. You don’t have to do ALL of these. Literally just doing ONE of them is enough and will have people recognise you as a human user.
