health reporting loves to go "this one weird trick improved all of my stress and health markers!" and the weird trick is like, go kayaking for three months or spend a month at pressure and... yeah. that will help. that's called "taking a sabbatical" and it is very good for you to have a period of rest and play and a change in your environment. I don't think it's about the kayak though
i do think we need to start treating spraying harmless "weeds" in your lawn as utterly absurd princess and the pea level of obsession with needing the world to revolve around your every whim, like.
Okay a flower grew out of the ground outside and you can't cope with it. Do you need to sleep on thirty feather beds as well
I haven't met the first pro-copyright person able to give me a logical answer to the question of why, if copyright abolition would massively and exclusively benefit gigantic media corporations, these corporations' constant copyright lobbying is universally on the side of stronger and stricter copyright laws.
I’m watching Splash (1984) which is a romcom about a guy who falls in love with a mermaid, and when she chooses a human name she chooses Madison and guy says “that’s not a real name, but alright” which seems to imply that Madison was not a name until at least the 80’s and all girls named Madison are actually named after the mermaid. thought you should know
I think...you might be right
there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well
and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it
the researchers found that being online didnt make people more hostile, but that being online allowed already hostile people to dominate forum conversations, and the less aggressive people were much less likely to reply or engage, ending in just the aggressive people bickering at eachother
straight people are so fascinating even when they aren't actively trying to be homophobic. I had a class a few years ago where one assignment was to summarize some eighth century arabic poetry about going out for drinks with the lads before indulging in some gay sex and like half the class came in and said "I'm sorry idk what was happening in this one, they mention having sex with a servant but they also say the servant's a man? where'd the woman come from? I'm so confused." and a few days ago in a shakespeare class I made a comment about how cleopatra and octavius caesar are kind of parallel characters in possessively bartering for mark antony's attention and one of my classmates responded as though I'd been talking about octavia and not caesar, despite the fact that I said "caesar" and "him" multiple times while describing the actions he specifically took. fully incapable of comprehending of anything that's even a little bit gay.
"if tumblr dies you can find me on bluesky" "if tumblr dies you can find me on Instagram" if tumblr dies you cannot find me. It's over. I'm free.
I love nonfiction that I simply cannot relate to at all. "it's easy to get addicted to buying fast fashion! I used to spend thousands of dollars on it a year!" okay. you're a space alien.
"survey finds that the average person in the UK only wears a piece of clothing 7 times" what are you talking about. what are you fucking talking about. who are these people and in what world are they average.
My dash was showing shitty posts after shitty posts and I couldn’t fathom why, then I realized I must have accidentally hit follow while on my daily round of sending you anon hate
you know ytoure allowed to just say 'kill youreslf' right... whjy are you doing a worse version of the seinfeld jerk store bit at me in my inbox. btw youre treading all over your punchline amiguita youve gotta let the reader end on 'hit follow' so they can process the joke themselves not just keep witlessly steamrollering on as if adding imaginary context to the joke makes it funnier
*doom music starts to play* I actually kindof like scheduling these kinds of appointments now...
but seriously Fellas, don't forget to schedule a pap smear every couple of years just in case. If you still have a cervix you can still get cervical cancer. ilu
this has been a psa
so in December 2024, after a lot of thinking & long discussions with dozens of other trans women, both in real life and online, i contacted the OP of this post to tell him my opinion, which is this:
whilst i don’t think the artist did it intentionally, this comic is actually pretty transmisogynistic. The joke relies on the receptionist’s shock at hearing a deep voice request an appointment at an OBGYN. the comic, in fact, reveals this information to us as the climax to the long build up: why on earth would a man with a deep voice want an OBGYN appointment? obviously the punchline is that he is trans! problem solved.
but this bothered me, and it apparently bothered dozens of other trans women I spoke to about this. why? for two reasons. 1. it’s basically the same joke as all the transmisogynistic gags you see in cartoons and 90s sitcoms (and 2000s sitcoms. and 2010 sitcoms. and—) where we are introduced to a woman only to reveal when she speaks that she has a deep voice. gasp! the difference here is, the joke is played in reverse — the deep voice comes right before the pay off, but “not a woman because of the deep voice” is still the punchline.
secondarily, this experience is actually something that happens to us all the time: trans women with deep voices are actually routinely denied OBGYN appointments because we’re told we’re just creepy men trying to get off to a fetish. the amount of trans women i personally know who have had this exact experience right up until the ending, before being instead permanently added to a blocked caller list is insane.
so i reached out to him, near Christmas last year. and we talked about it — he was defensive, but less than i had anticipated and we had a pretty productive conversation where he said he saw my point of view and he seemed really genuinely hurt by the fact that his comic comes off as transmisogynistic. and he even agreed to turn reblogs off, before wishing me a happy christmas.
i found out today that he didn’t do that, and instead threw up a small post (that barely anybody saw even) affirming his vision for the comic and how that was the “intended interpretation” — no mention of what the “alternate interpretation” might be at all. so i messaged him and asked about it and…. he totally denied ever having agreed to turn reblogs off, and basically proceeded to tell me my “interpretation” wasn’t his intention and thus didn’t matter, and advised me to “curate my own experience”. this time he seemed thoroughly unbothered by the fact that trans women found this comic to be transmisogynistic, and kept reiterating that he thinks it doesn’t matter that “some trans women” found it transnisogynistic because he thinks that the joy it has brought transmascs is a “net positive”. he has basically been totally hostile since.
unbelievable. this really disappointed me.
UPDATE EDIT: Sorry, I got some of the details mixed up — I just scrolled to the top of our DMs to find that he actually confronted ME about having made a post detailing my opinions on this comic. Because he was that bothered by somebody calling his comic transnisogynistic — he doesn’t see bothered by the fact that trans women feel that way, just that we open our mouths about it.
one could make the argument that despite the Unfortunate Implication it is valid for transmascs to find some manner of amusement in such situations, it is valuable, i think, to point out that it might be easier for them to find fun in this since at the end of the day, the transmasculine person would get the care that they need.
the joke here doesn't just work because the subject of the comic has the kind of organs an OBGYN works on, it works because they have, from society's point of view, the right kind of organs. transfems in the reverse situation are much more likely to endure ruthless and violent abuse and will not find the joy that a transmasc would find here, no matter how funny the piece is.
and at this point, i don't know y'all girls, but i'm starting to get tired being told to be happy for transmascs' privileges.
