a whole lotta unethical experiments is what happened!!
due to shadow’s status as a lab creation, he is treated by GUN as an object. they poke and prod at him in the laboratory and have him go through physical training to turn him into a grade A military weapon. (that is why they funded project: shadow, after all.) he has no freedom and is kept on a very tight leash. all of this makes him mentally and physically exhausted. he’s very much a kicked puppy by the time maria finds him.
overall he just has a very bad time!! no humane living conditions + no sister = a very sad hedgehog :[

how does maria get along with everyone else, specifically sonic and rouge?

so rouge is a bit of a special case. i said earlier that shadow and maria meet everyone later in the story (current day) but they actually meet rouge earlier than that! shadow meets rouge when he’s out in the city by himself (haven’t decided which city they live in yet), and they get along easily. what he doesn’t realize is that she’s working for GUN to spy on the pair after they escaped from the facility.
at first maria and rouge really rub against each other. maria thinks rouge is suspicious (this is mostly due to paranoia) and rouge is kind of sweating bullets trying to keep maria from realizing she’s working for the government. they purposefully annoy each other and the only reasons they interact are because shadow is friends with both of them and rouge needs to keep tabs on maria and shadow. as they spend more time together, they start realizing how similar they actually are, and develop a cautious friendship.
after a few months of this song and dance a certain event makes everything come to a head when maria accuses rouge outright of working for GUN and rouge ends up confessing because, to her horror, she has grown an emotional attachment to these two weirdos and wants to be honest with them. shadow is obviously bothered by this confession, but i think he can see past rouge’s outward disposition and realize that she feels genuine fondness toward them.
after a while (and some more story stuff i won’t yap about now), maria and rouge become really good friends! they like girl talking to each other and sometimes rouge lets her tag along for some missions she has (legal and illegal).
as for sonic, i don’t have nearly as much about him figured out lol. i have some rough sketches for a possible design and he acts pretty similarly to how he acts in canon. he and shadow have their classic rivalry of course.
he gets along with maria really well! when they first meet in the story they have conflicting interests, but after maria and shadow drop black doom her and sonic become fast friends. they have a mutual love for the earth and general tree-hugger energy so that’s where a lot of their bonding potential comes from. shadow’s pissed off from how well they get along cause he thinks sonic is annoying lol.
i feel a bit guilty for spending such a disproportionate amount of time on rouge and sonic but i hope this is a satisfactory answer to your ask! thanks for letting me yap!
ok fellas i PROMISE i have been drawing stuff for the black arms maria au but this past 2 weeks has been exhausting. a lot of things have happened (good and bad) and i have been taking time to recoup. dunno when i will get around to posting next but i’ve been trying to answer some asks! thanks everyone for being so interested in this au too! my eyes shot out of my head looney tunes style when i saw 3k notes on that post lol.

Are Shadow and Maria allowed to spend any sort of time together while held by GUN? How does Shadow feel about how Maria’s changed? On the flip side how does Maria feel about how Shadow’s being treated?
ok so sorry for yapping so much- I realized I kind of had to lay out the series of events to properly explain everything. thanks for the ask!!
The ark raid in this au goes pretty much just like in canon, so shadow believes maria was killed while trying to save him. Gun finds him crash landed on earth and instead of putting him in stasis, they do their mean little experiments on him. They have maria in the same facility, and they revive her there very soon after she’s killed on the ark. Shadow has no idea they do this, and gun keeps the two of them separated the entire time they’re in the facility, so shadow has no clue maria is alive, and maria doesn’t know shadow is in the same facility as her. Eventually, maria makes a plan to escape the facility herself, and during her grand escape is when she and shadow finally meet again!
Shadow is very shocked maria is alive, and at first he doesn’t think it’s really her, but when he hears her speak and hold him he realizes that she’s really alive somehow. When he starts to notice her new alien aspects during their escape he’s, of course, very shocked, but she still acts just like his big sis. He’s concerned for her well being, but he still loves her all the same (even if she looks a bit more off putting and can body a full grown man now).
When maria finds shadow in her escape, she rescues him from a dangerous experiment a group of scientists were about to do to him. She quickly notices how terrible he looks, and gets really upset. Like, she though she saved him from gun, but you’re telling her shadow’s been here the whole time?? She’s pissed! She can tell he’s been treated horribly, so she’s just a little bit more violent with the soldiers she takes out for the rest of their escape (as a treat).
I’m thinking of drawing out their reunion (maybe as a comic?) because I have the whole thing written out.

Anyway, did Black Doom try to convince Maria to join his side at all in this AU? Or more jokingly, did The Devil(TM) from The Bible(TM) try to convince Maria to do sin, like stealing candy from babies and small businesses(I'm not talking about Walmart)?

Black doom does indeed try to convince maria (and shadow) to do sin. In the “current day” (so 3 yrs after they escape the gun facility), the main story begins with the black arms invasion from shadow 05. Maria and shadow are approached by black doom, and they are very hesitant to join him. They ally with him for a bit to see if they can figure out what his deal is and then they (finally) meet the rest of the cast! Battles and cataclysmic events ensue.
This is all a very rough outline and things are subject to change and develop ofc, but this is the bare bones idea.
Now i just need to figure out if i want maria to steal candy… perhaps from a baby or small business.
