The problem is that we think the opposite of funny is serious. It is not. In fact, as G. K. Chesterton pointed out, the opposite of funny is not funny, and the opposite of serious is not serious. Benny Hill was funny and not serious; Rory Bremner is funny and serious; most politicians are serious but, unfortunately, not funny. Humour has its uses. Laughter can get through the keyhole while seriousness is still hammering on the door. New ideas can ride in on the back of a joke, old ideas can be given an added edge.

finally got around to updating my pinned post so there's two-almost-three more years of story output on there now.

I love this story so much. It's one of my favorite things that Rachel Swirsky has ever written (and Rachel is a tremendous writer.)

It's about the generational aftermath of an alien invasion of Earth, told through the relationship of two women, one human and one alien. It's funny, heartfelt, moving. Every time I read it, I laugh and I cry.

Come on down to Wizards Vs. Lesbians, where we've recorded our longest episode yet - and, fittingly, it's on a book about the biggest animal ever, the sperm whale. I am sure the sperm whale is the biggest animal there is. The sperm whale is big and it's real and it's my nemesis and I don't know what that emo kid's getting up to with my harpooneer over there but it sure smacks of lesbianism.

read that post blacked out and woke up with this on my computer. crazy. stay safe out there everyone

next time people tell you the average tumblr user isnt misogynistic i need you to remember that every day people tag this post with mlm ships

Question: What is the greatest magic of all? Answer: Friendship, right? [B]: The greatest magic of all is not friendship, it's chronomancy, the ability to control and warp time. If friendship were the greatest magic, look, it's a pet peeve of mine (...)

for comp sci, physics, math, etc p much everything is uploaded by authors to https://arXiv.org

also, use Unpaywall

(and sci-hub but I didn’t tell you this)

This is true! I was writing a fanfiction and found an article that would be a great reference so I sent an email to the professor who wrote it with my .edu email and told him it was for a “personal project”. Never give upon your dreams kids

I am married to a professor and it is indeed all true. The only reason they bother publishing 90% in a fancy journal of their papers is because their university requires them to publish in those paywalled journals for promotion or tenure, or else it doesn’t count. Professors are not paid ANY money from journals.

They’d do the research anyway for the love of the topic, but they’d be a lot happier releasing it for free to the world.
