The Pony Roses system: Seven mares in a trenchcoat. May or may not add up to a functioning person. Devotee of Luna. Friends of eggbug.

writing advice for characters with a missing eye: dear God does losing an eyes function fuck up your neck. Ever since mine crapped out I've been slowly and unconsciously shifting towards holding my head at an angle to put the good eye closer to the center. and human necks. are not meant to accommodate that sorta thing.

other things I'm bitching about but which could still be useful as writing advice for 1 eyed characters:

2. they're going to favor their sighted side, obviously, but it doesn't always manifest in the way you think. when I walk down a hall I walk much closer to the wall on my sighted side than on my blind side. which is the opposite of how it might seem logical to do that bc it means the world at large is on your bad side, but the reason is I can't fucking See the wall if it's right next to me in the blind side and I end up knocking into it.

3. door frames and poles are my enemy. If your character is smart this will not be a problem but for me it is. I am King of walking into shit I could absolutely see but couldn't tell how far away from me it was. on this note, their blind side hand is getting bashed into every jutting out thing in a 5 mile radius.

4. having 0 depth perception is less of a big deal than you'd think it is. Especially with driving. I've become a Much safer and more wary driver because I can't tell how far the other cars are from me. however I fucking suck at parking now. because I can't tell how far the lines are from me either.

5. you know how people who lose limbs get phantom pains? that happens with eyes too but like. phantom sights. for me it's like. a lot of bugs. like every so often my brain will just put something suddenly skittering beside me there. hate that.

6. it is completely possible to "get stuck" somewhere because your ability to tell how wide a space is is just Gone. shopping isles especially where bumping something or Someone is matter of embarrassment or potentially breaking something. it can be legitimately paralyzing and also irritate everyone around you because they can tell there is Plenty of space for you to get your cart through even if you can't.

7. if the eye is still in their skull it can still be the normal kind of painful. Glares off of shiny surfaces causing weird sharp pains you can't figure out the cause of are genuinely one of gods greatest tests of my patience.

see the THING IS I don't feel like I ever worked hard enough to have "earned" the burnout, which is. probably how we got here.

never forgive trigger for what they cut

started ranting abt this to a friend... i'm still so irritated that they didn't include this

It also emphasizes how different this is from the magic we've seen from her before. Like, it was a major, albeit comedic, plot point that her water walking spell doesn't even work if your hair is too dirty. She isn't super particular about hygiene just because she likes to be clean, or thinks it's icky otherwise, this is a serious practical concern that her magic doesn't work as well without that purity. A difficult spell, requiring precision and with high stakes for failure, you would expect her to spend an hour beforehand fastidiously sterilizing everything involved like she's about to do brain surgery.

But this isn't that kind of spell. This spell is playing by an entirely different set of rules. This is magic that was created by, and for, people who are soaked in blood.

btw it is sexy and cool to uplift and admire people who have skills you wish you had without using their ability as a stick to beat yourself with. even and especially if you are jealous of them.

Bro absolutely COOKED with this.

If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.

It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.

It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.

This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.

i hate when the teacher’s like “write about a bad time in your life” like i ain’t tryna get a social worker up my ass, thanks tho fam

This ain’t no joke I had to write a essay about what your scared of so I did it (I was scared of growing up and where my life was going) it was great got a 100 but then I got sent to councilors office and was sent to therapy cause they thought I was suicidal and on the verge of breaking…Apparently they ment like spiders or some shit…

Also like, not everyone finds that at all useful or cathartic.

“Write about some difficulty you’ve experienced personally.” “Aight fam let me just break down into tears and skip the rest of my classes.”

Yes! I had a psych professor ask us to discuss outloud the hardest thing that ever happened to us literally two days ago and I said “you realize the position you’re putting us in? I feel obligated to lie to not only save my peers the awkwardness but also because I will find no relief in answering honestly but rather anxiety. The hardest thing in my life is having people repeatedly tell me I should find some sort of catharsis in reliving my trauma so someone else can feel pity for me!”

The whole class backed me up because they didn’t want to either! Those kind of exercises are only helpful for people who don’t have any real past/current issues– which is no one btw.

On par with this are those fucking self-assessments where they want to to be optimistic and positive about the future. You’re sitting there drowning in college stress and anxiety so bad you can’t look another human in the eye, fighting depression so that you can eventually achieve a piece of paper that might get you a better job if the economy doesn’t tank itself (guess what, it did), and the most optimistic thing you can think of is that the class ends in 20 minutes.

#why do they do this though ~ @inqorporeal

OH! I KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS!

There’s a WIRED article that explains the history behind this practice.

Basically, this guy named Jeffrey Mitchell had a traumatic experience, then after months of PTSD, he told a confidant about the event that traumatized him. Retelling the event to a confidant was so cathartic for Mitchell that his PTSD went away after. He did a bunch of research to see if his personal experience of catharsis and relief could be replicated in other people suffering from PTSD. Years later he published a paper proposing a formalized psychiatric treatment revolving around this idea that expressing a traumatic experience helps relieve it. The paper was so influential that the whole psychiatric community adopted “critical incident stress debriefing” (CISD) as a standard treatment for PTSD.

Unfortunately … it’s bullshit.

Not only does the CISD treatment program Mitchell came up with not help the majority of patients who try it, but it actually makes PTSD worse in the majority of patients who try it.

The WIRED article explains why:

CISD misapprehends how memory works…. Once a memory is formed, we assume that it will stay the same. This, in fact, is why we trust our recollections. They feel like indelible portraits of the past.
None of this is true. In the past decade, scientists have come to realize that our memories are not inert packets of data and they don’t remain constant.
…the very act of remembering changes the memory itself. New research is showing that every time we recall an event, the structure of that memory in the brain is altered in light of the present moment, warped by our current feelings and knowledge.

Basically, Mitchell waited until he had some emotional distance before trying to recall the memory, and he had full control of the situation. It was fully his decision. Nobody was pressuring him to talk about it. So he felt safe. Thinking about the memory from a place of safety allowed his brain to re-contextualize the memory as harmless.

Conversely, pressuring a patient to recall a traumatic memory, particularly when it’s still fresh in their minds, makes the patient feel very unsafe. Recalling a bad memory in this unsafe context only serves to re-traumatize the patient.

basically, there’s a big damn difference between choosing to confide in someone you trust and being pressured to make a public spectacle of your trauma

THIS JUST IN: Forced Public Recalling of Trauma Not As Helpful As Voluntarily Processing Trauma In A Safe Space

civilization-building games suffer from the player already knowing where they're headed. every tech you research, every culture you meet - you're re-treading known history; there's no surprise in discovery. for such a game to reach its full impact it must first inflict significant brain damage on its player. as such i will work to release the first video game that comes packaged with an orbitoclast

oh has tumblr also jumped on the "being fat on purpose is bannable content" train now. epic society, love to live in it

cloak it in as much patronizing language as you like, the reality is that it is simply another vector of selective moderation for palatability. on a website who's reporting system allows one to flag the entirely chaste selfies of trans women as mature content, what do you suppose the outcome will be for fat people? sorry pal, you're just a bit too big to be anything but a fetish, we can't be showing that in front of the advertisers. we're trying to sling diet pills over here, you're off-message.

my apologies that i cannot be effectively advertised to. i will continue to be fat and get fatter for self-image, for fun, and yes indeed for sex reasons regardless 👍

Mature content

She’s just like me honestly

Perhaps this will be thought of as being too woke but it's really discouraging that people are constantly inventing new reasons to think of people with slow reaction times or who misunderstand instructions as evil or idiotic or soulless. Like complaining about older people having a blank stare while they try to process what the barista said or whatever. Oh, they have the evil bad people lead poisoning. They're brain damaged. They have Facebook brainrot. They're NPCs, whatever, etc. As someone with bad sensory processing from psychosis and ADHD (you people can't do anything haha I know omg disabled person is disabled) I so often end up lagging there trying to understand what I'm supposed to do. I have trouble reading the instructions on the keypad, I have trouble processing the push or pull on the door, I have trouble processing the words being said to me and following instructions. You can still think I'm a piece of shit customer and that's fine but going online and seeing people act like this behavior makes you subhuman and non-concious is soooo depressing

There are so many situations in our world where if you suggest someone might have a somewhat sympathetic reason for acting in a strange way, people get extremely mad that you've taken away their favorite inherently evil demographic and start acting like you're the bad one. "Don't pathologize everything" you're pathologizing it in different words, you just don't like the words that make them seem like human beings with internal logic

And if you don't have a disability now as a young person someday you'll be old and more mentally disabled than you are now and everyone will hate you the same way btw

A bus may have only a couple of passengers, especially at the beginning or end of its route. But let's also take fuel efficiency into account.

If there's one person on a bus because that person cannot or doesn't want to drive, the bus is succeeding.
